3  trillion trees : 15 Billion = 200000 years till the last tree is cut ( but I am sure the mankind will do it in the next 200 years. Shave the world, get rid of the trees! )

Well, i don't know how it's done in the rest of the world, but around here it is the so called sustainable forest industry; a new forest is planted after the old one has been cut down. The logging operations are timed so that the forests have time to grow back.

 

No that it changes the fact that humanity will eat itself to death. Figuratively, and sometime literally :shrug:

that picture is a little misleading, it makes it look as if the area from Missouri to Michigan is almost barren, but having made the road trip several times.. i can say there are a shit fucking ton of trees thru that area. on the top of tall hills and buildings it looks like an endless sea of trees.

Yes, and no.  If you look at the quality of wood (for building, making boards, etc.) today versus 50 or 100 years ago, you'll find that the "new growth" trees haven't grown as long (duh), and are thus of lesser quality for building things than the old stock.  More rings, more solid wood?  Something like that.  It takes a year to make a ring, regardless.  You can't rush "good" wood.

 

More trees?  Perhaps.  But definitely younger trees, getting cut before they have a chance to mature, with saplings planted in their place.  It's renewable in name only if we don't allow the time for the resource to fully recover.

While on face value that "appears it could be true", it isn't.  While there are grades to wood, there is nothing superior about an old tree vs a newer tree.  

The grades in wood have to do with structural value and with straightness.  Doug Fir and Southern yellow pine have greater structural value, and SPF (spruce, pine, fir) are your lesser structural valued framing studs.  Maturity is not a factor in this.

 

Where maturity comes in is in how many boards can a single tree produce.  Obviously the greater the maturity of the tree, the larger it is and the more that can be harvested from it.  That is pretty much it (in simple terms).

 

While the "heartwood" of some tree types may indeed be more dense (or solid) it isn't worth a damn to builders.  It is too hard to cut and with gulams and parallams (engineered structural components), it is irrelevant, as those far exceed any natural woods structural values.

 

Sorry to Bob the Builder you there, but construction is my day job.  

 

As to the logging industry, believe me, they have this down to a science on when and how much to plant and when it can be harvested.  We are in no danger of running out of building materials in North America.....EVER.

Honestly as soon as we realized we are about to hit a wall and there is profit to be made then trust me. We will develop some crazy ass technology to replace the bad one.

We might start harvesting and eating farmed bugs due to the insane amount of energy it costs to make beef, pork or even chicken. Where there is a profit/need then there is a way.
