gvman3670 Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 As for forced updates, that can be turned off as well. Damned near everything anyone's complained about can be turned off actually. You're not wrong but you're also not right. There are settings which you can optically turn off. But there are still parts of Windows 10 which will still operate normally as if they have never been turned off, even if the settings slider says "off". And that's the biggest fucking stupidest thing Microsoft evr did. Why should I want to give my privacy away to Microsoft? Why should I let them do on my device what they want? I bought my fucking device and paid for it. I bought a fucking license to use it, so why should I give away the right to install what I want away to Microsoft so they can fucking install what they want, grasp everything about me and how I use it and upload it to their server? They have no fucking right to do that. And that's why I continue to use Windows 7, even though I could upgrade to Windows 10. I hope the EU Commission will fuck their fucking ass anytime soon. So what do you think they're taking or doing exactly?
chajapa Posted September 7, 2015 Posted September 7, 2015 I have a Mac mini. I have Win7 Pro in a Bootcamp partition so I can play Skyrim. That's really all it's for. When I boot to OS X I have Parallels. One with Win7 Enterprise and one with Win10. Windows 10 doesn't look that bad. I'll have to play around with it a bit more before deciding to upgrade the Bootcamp partition to windows 10. And for everyone with the tinfoil hats.... it's the internet, baby. You have no privacy. You use Windows.... you get Microsoft antics. Microsoft is sneaky. You use OS X.... you get Apple. Apple is less sneaky, but they sugar-coat their stuff and hypnotize users so the user thinks they WANT Apple's antics... It is what it is.

BCk9 Posted September 9, 2015 Author Posted September 9, 2015 Raruff! Well, there's certainly a variety of 'opinions' about Win 10, here and elsewhere. Made me more aware of some of the parameters of the OS they're offering us. Keep it coming please! THX
Guest ...failure Posted September 10, 2015 Posted September 10, 2015 If you're satisfied with Windows 7 and it got things you need from it, why risk useful time on jumping grasshopper
Elie Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 As someone who has used from windows 98 to windows xp, to vista, to 7 and now recently 8.1 and 10. To put it bluntly... I find Windows 10 an amazing piece of OS and simultaniously the most desperate and annoying Microsoft "Ad" ever made. Several decisions from Microsoft within windows 10, led me to believe that they were trying their hardest, like the case with microsoft Edge, to promote themselves.
Guest Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 What pisses me off it communicates with MS even when turned off. Update hell. App store (why the fuck would I need an online store installed on my computer?!) An ID when I am logging unto my own PC (desktop). it just blows my fucking mind.

PsychoMachina Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Malwarebytes blocked GWXConfigManager.exe from connecting to an MS server. I added a rule to the Windows firewall (ironic, isn't it) to block all outbound connections from GWXConfigManager. So far, I don't have that GWX icon on my systems tray, no popups, and no $Windows.~BT folder.
...0... Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 Probably won't upgrade even tho i have Radeon Fury X GPU, my privacy is my own and nobody making money on personal info, then some fancy smooth running OS with DX12 fuck that.

So far the only foolproof way of blocking the spyware is to install win10 on an internet-inactive hdd, and download (bigger)updates manually from another hdd and then port them to win10. Which is a huge ginormous headache and it's much easier to simply stay on win7 and tell everything else to fuck off. What a shitstorm this has become...

Kinky Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 You should upgrade to 10. Then turn off anything that spys on you, not use store and you got yourself free OS better, faster then Win 7 and with longer support. Technology is making a progress all the time not upgrading for free is dumb thing to do. Dual booting 2 windows is also kinda dumb.
RitualClarity Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Your dilemma is definitely "Ruff".. What to do Burn the image of Win10 so if you don't like it now you can use it later Get some imaging software and an external drive / nas etc if you don' t have one and create an image back up your personal data etc that is on the OS to make sure it is available when you upgrade or full install (perhaps better option) Upgrade, test and give it a good attempt to see if it fits for you If not, or minor issues, just restore the old image of what you had before. No harm other than the time to test. I just haven't taken the time to figure out how to get the full image of Windows 10 for my computers. I have 2 licenses for Win 7 so I believe I have two Win 10 upgrades available. Haven't tried because don't want to mess it up. Might be free but don't want to screw it up and be told later I have to buy:)
Twycross448 Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 I tried Win 10 for about 6 weeks. Not much, granted. Now I am back on Win7 Ultimate. Besides not liking the visuals (I really like the softer, more rounded look of W7 better than the flat, rectangular, one-colour blocks of Win10), what put me off was the amount of work necessary to excorsise most of Win10s phoning home stuff. While it is possible to completely remove Cortana and most other spyware, it is a lot of work, digging around in system files, editing .dlls etc. What really broke it for me though was Win10s bad habit of forcing hardware drivers on me. Despite me doing my best do tell it not to (registry editing, setting group policies), it absolutely insisted on updating my Catalyst driver. (I use a slightly older version on purpose, because it runs best with the games I actually play.) Forcing even "Pro" users to accept any and all updates they deem necessary. Removing control like that over my own machine just makes me grouchy, even more so than the privacy invading (which is partially there in Win7 also if oyu have all latest updates, where they patched in some of the stuff from Win10. Telemetry for example.) I'll see where I go once support for Win7 runs out in 2020. Until then, I'm on 7.

Just backing up and restoring your old system won't work, since you'd be stuck with a Win10 key. To properly go back from 10 to 7, you need to do so via Win10s control app (or however that is called, I forgot). There is a specific entry in the backup&restore part of the applet that allows you to go back to Win7 and revert your key in the process.

Umm, as the new 'security changes' are actually back porting WinX stuff to it, your Windows 7 install will be basically be Windows 7 visually with WinX snooping, (plus the 3gb WinX installation package). So you have the choices:- A) assume that probably most of the security issues for Windows 7 are actually just add-on software issues at this point, thus disable Windows 7 updates and update those patches for the other software on a piece meal basis. B ) assume that there will be something fundamentally wrong with your Windows 7 install and accept the back porting of WinX features to maintain your piece of mind against the 'threat'. Thus keep Windows 7, (proxy WinX), updates enabled. D) Disable updates and trawl through the patch documentation to decide whether you want to install a particular patch. (Good luck with getting accurate information from that). E) Be more aggressive and say 'Fuck you!, the only reason I'm on this O/S is because of the games and if someone manages to get Bethesda stuff to run natively under Linux you are out of here'. (ps as a career Windows developer am totally pissed off and considering working in a field - not another field, just a field - where you don't need a shield, but a sturdy pair of wellies).

Gee thanks, I guess I had to pay 200 for that Dreamweaver software that I only needed for one class. THANK YOU MS! Btw, I have not updated this computer since reinstalling the windows. when I do download some updates its just some security downloads.
PsychoMachina Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 In some countries that hunt monkeys, the hunters utilize a method of capturing them with little effort. They find a tree with a hole or, if there are termite mounds, dig a hole just small enough for the monkey to fit it's hand in. The hunters then place food or a shiny object in that hole. When a monkey sees the food or shiny object, it will reach in to grab it, but now it's stuck because they are holding on to that object and can't pull their hand out. Only if the monkey is smart will it let go and free itself else the hunter simply runs up and bags the monkey which, out of fear, finally lets go, but it's too late. The main reason I'm not upgrading to win10 anytime soon is because MS does not just give away a shiny, new OS for free, they don't profit from it. The free upgrade is a 'test' upgrade and the reason for the forced updates and spyware tactics, they want feedback on how the OS is working and how people are using it. Turn off the spyware-like services? Sure, but does it completely turn them off? Disable Windows Update? That prevents installation of security fixes/patches and you may as well turn of internet access because hackers will bank on infecting users who don't keep their W10 system patched with the latest security update. Is there any word from MS stating that when W10 is available for purchase, the free, 'testing' version remains free? Free as in 'free beer' with no strings attached.

Haven't tested myself and have no intention to do it but I wouldn't rely on the image you made earlier, unless you're going to test Windows 10 on a PC that is not connected to the Internet. I seriously doubt that it's possible. If you do it while online then you'll probably have to say goodbye to your Win 7 key. And then, even if you restore the old OS using the previous image, it'll probably refuse to activate due to the serial key change. I wouldn't risk it.
Kinky Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 You shouldnt be to worried about informations they are collecting. More of a spy tool is your smartphone that is sending your location, weather info places you visit things you do (facebook app). You can always be paranoid and think everyone is spying on you even with windows 7. With windows 10 you can get free upgrade to faster OS that will support new technologies and that is already reason to upgrade. After that you are free to install whatever you want (facebook app to spy on you if you want), your own antivirus and antispyware software, your own internet browser. In the end they spy on you only as much as you let them.
