You shouldnt be to worried about informations they are collecting. More of a spy tool is your smartphone that is sending your location, weather info places you visit things you do (facebook app). You can always be paranoid and think everyone is spying on you even with windows 7. With windows 10 you can get free upgrade to faster OS that will support new technologies and that is already reason to upgrade. After that you are free to install whatever you want (facebook app to spy on you if you want), your own antivirus and antispyware software, your own internet browser. In the end they spy on you only as much as you let them.

I dont care about those stuff honestly.

Without my smartphone I cant do a lot of things I need for my job.

I draw the line at my home computer.

In some countries that hunt monkeys, the hunters utilize a method of capturing them with little effort.  They find a tree with a hole or, if there are termite mounds, dig a hole just small enough for the monkey to fit it's hand in.  The hunters then place food or a shiny object in that hole.  When a monkey sees the food or shiny object, it will reach in to grab it, but now it's stuck because they are holding on to that object and can't pull their hand out.  Only if the monkey is smart will it let go and free itself else the hunter simply runs up and bags the monkey which, out of fear, finally lets go, but it's too late.

The main reason I'm not upgrading to win10 anytime soon is because MS does not just give away a shiny, new OS for free, they don't profit from it.  The free upgrade is a 'test' upgrade and the reason for the forced updates and spyware tactics, they want feedback on how the OS is working and how people are using it.  Turn off the spyware-like services?  Sure, but does it completely turn them off?  Disable Windows Update?  That prevents installation of security fixes/patches and you may as well turn of internet access because hackers will bank on infecting users who don't keep their W10 system patched with the latest security update.

Is there any word from MS stating that when W10 is available for purchase, the free, 'testing' version remains free?  Free as in 'free beer' with no strings attached.

This, at least some people are smart...

and +100 for the example story.

I really suggest that you keep using your win7 pro and download a copy of win10 or Try dual-booting your PC so that you could use both but not at the same time though

For now I'm staying with Win 7, waiting for MS to get it together [not that that will ever really happen.]

Im running windows 10 for 2 weeks now(had to switch windows7 i could not install anymore) and it force me nothing on driver part, so all say it does lie. As for the spy part well i disable or remove the install so thats to a minimum as with windows7 or windows 8.1.

I have no webcam or use a mic so they can try get my voice or my face thats imposible this way. I removed onedrive fuck that. Cortana will never be a problem for me i will never use it.

If they realy start forcing things then i'm going to abandon windows.

For now its all not that bad its fraction faster and because i disable most its not more annoying then windows 7/8.1.

Yeh i still like the looks of windows 7 the most but thats a minor importance.

At least when DX12 comes for games i benefit from it.

My main PC i use for gaming but i don't use it for browsing or install anything but steam and game i wanne play thats all my SSD is completely clean with no personal data at all. For everything else i use my second PC or laptop.

It looks like you already made up your mind, but I can offer a little bit of insight as well! I recently upgraded my computer and am running the following setup:

CPU: AMD FX-8350 @ 4.0GHz

RAM: 8.00GB DDR3 (Can't remember the brand off the top of my head)

Motherboard: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD5

Graphics: Gigabyte Radeon R9 390X

HDD: 1TB Seagate (non-SSD)

Audio: On-board + Steelseries Elite Prism (optional soundcard always plugged in)

Input: Razer Blackwidow Chroma Stealth Keyboard, Razer Mamba Tournament Edition

Monitor: Honestly, I have no idea. There are two of them and they are both reasonably sized, but not as big as yours.

The recent upgrade included the CPU, Motherboard, and Graphics card. I couldn't tell you what I had previously, although I can say it wasn't awful--just starting to get slightly dated. On that setup, I ran Windows 7 Pro for nearly 5 years. When I initially swapped from Windows XP to Windows 7, I noticed a performance decrease in the system. Everything was noticeably slower, but I dealt with it because Windows 7 looked great. I've always loved the customizability of it and I absolutely abhorred Windows 8.

When I upgraded, several people told me to "stop stalling" and "just upgrade to Windows 10." So I did! I was told that you can switch back "with the click of a button," although I haven't wanted to so I'm unfamiliar with how that process works. The upgrade was extremely simple and I'm actually very impressed with Windows 10 overall. There has been no performance impact and I like the smooth look of the OS and customization aspect of the start bar. Hell, I'm just glad the start bar is back!

I have had some system restraint issues that I'm not used to. Some of those included a struggle to turn off the action center, notifications about Windows Firewall, and not having a "New" (create) button in the Program Files folders inside My Computer. The good news is, I was able to find simple registry edits to resolve all of these issues, but it didn't make it less frustrating when I was sitting around trying to mod my games and I couldn't create new folders.

Overall, however, after a handful of tweaks, I'm super happy with the upgrade. The system is stable and pretty! There are still some programs I'm working on removing (I swear I am NEVER going to use the windows store and I WILL find a way to get it off my computer), but there were lots of tweaks I made to Windows 7 in 5 years as well, so I regret nothing. :)

I installed 10 on my laptop cuz it came with 8.1.  I absolutely hate it.  The interface is more like a kiddy toy than an operating system.  Leaves me feeling patronized.

(copied from the archived forum)

Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system may uninstall programs -- desktop programs that is -- from the computer after installation of the big Fall update that the company released earlier this month.

According to reports on the Internet, Speccy is not the only program affected by this. Others report that programs like CPU-Z, AMD Catalyst Control Center or CPUID were removed as well during the upgrade.

http://www.ghacks.net/2015/11/24/beware-latest-windows-10-update-may-remove-programs-automatically/

You should get the Windows 10 "operating system", if you want Microsoft (and possibly others) to "operate your system". Simple as that.

I took up the option to "upgrade" after almost a month of constant daily "reminders" that I was entitled to.

The install didn't 'take' the first time, so had to waste another 2 hours doing it again. Then I find that the new version is ugly. As in UGLY as fuck. And there wasn't anything you could do about it.

Then I found that software was 'missing'. At least at first glance. It didn't actually delete anything, just didn't register it as a program.

E.G. copy of Photo-Shop, still on drive, unlisted. Assigned a .bmp file to it, worked again.

Bu the worst is the auto updates. They're not working properly. Whenever an update is available, my Start menu and taskbar crash.

Everything that has an icon on the desktop is available and works, can browse the internet. But my taskbar is empty and the Start button doesn't respond. Have to ctrl-alt-del to task manager and restart. Then the update kicks in. 2/3 needs another reboot.

Unfortunately, going back/sticking with Win 7 isn't really an option in the long run though.

From 31 October 2016, no new PC will be sold with Win 7 installed. So ya wants a new PC for next Christmas, ya gets Windows 10.

Windows 10 is still in beta (in my opinion) so there will be issues.

Windows 7 is established so is nice and stable and easy to mess with.

Basically, windows 10 advantages over 7 are fast boot, direct x12 and 5%-10% bump in GPU power (it's a lot more efficient with games)

Windows 7 doesn't force auto updates and you have a little more control.

As far as control over an OS goes though really we lost it since we move on from XP so giving up more control isn't an issue for me.

Let's pray someone optimizes Linux for games and we can all wave Microsoft goodbye but I've been saying that for 10 years (SteamOS gave me hope until I used it)

I don't own win7 pro. I would like to buy it. My PC came with win7 home premium and the OS got messed up about 5 years ago forcing me to buy a new OS so I bought win7 home premium sp1 OEM. The OEM only serves for one time use on a specific motherboard. So it's redundant for me on a new pc build. And since a new PC build has been on my mind and I've been slowly saving to build one, win7 pro is something I would rather buy. I may just buy the OEM version for it since it's cheaper and I probably wouldn't consider getting a new motherboard unless the one I have becomes faulty then that would suck.

Never had interest in win8 because of the appearance and then the horrible tales about it. I just don't trust MS anymore. Especially when they are trying to force me to update from my win7 to win10 and force updates on you with win10. I can't wait to build my first pc.  I have very good knowledge about parts thanks to many pc wizards here.

aaand cut :)

Cut out your text, but wanted to let you know, I was stuck with W7 Home Premium as well, but I bought an "Anytime Upgrade Key" through an online store and upgraded my W7 to W7 Pro. Haven't updated to W10 yet, since I consider buying a new MB and CPu before that.

I think I paid around 25 Euros for the upgrade key, but I wanted to make sure to go to W10 from W7 Pro.

Maybe that is an option?

I've heard about system builders and then I heard about home builders. Home builders that allow you to continue to use the product key as many times as possible. I haven't thoroughly looked into it, I don't even know if that is just rumors or if it's real since I've only seen OEM/system builders or the retail one that allows (I think) 4 uses of the product key, which evidently costs more of course. If that anytime upgrade key is the same as the home builders I've read about recently, that would be nice.  Thanks for the info. :)

Fuck no

Worse than 10

Worse than 10

I'd like to NOT feel patronized by my operating system, thank you very much, and nor am I forking out cash out the ass for overpriced hardware and software due to "licensing" rights, when my PC runs just fine.  Three major hardware overhauls on this install of windows, not one crash or bump yet.

Anyway, I found a way to shut off the updates and disable the alert prompt without compromising other windows 7 updates

Completely free and pretty nice.

Make sure HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / WindowsUpdate / OSUpgrade / AllowOSUpgrade is present and set to 1. All my problems with the Windows 10 upgrade failing, or failing to activate was caused by this key being missing in Windows 7.

Hmmmm.

Well, I started this thread and I keep coming back to find out what people think/feel about Win 10.

So far it seems to be 2 to 1 AGAINST the new Win 10 OS in general [this isn't the only site I've been querying].

Still going to wait and see if there's any improvement over the next little while [fixes, alts., re-do's, etc.].

OR until I have no choice.

Is it just the way I'm seeing it, or does it seem that Win 10 works better for laptops and tablets?

A lot of the complaints I've seen [here and elsewhere] have been from people [like me] who have tower units.

THX and keep the comments coming.
