Very very little and that's why you can't replace one with the other!! This is the main flaw in your post. As a gamer operating in a medieval world, I don't want to switch to a hyper-modern industrial age - just because sex scenes might be smoother and error-free. If anything, cyberpunk could be compared to the Fallout universe. Only what was presented as "Cyberpunk" was ultimately a mutilated version of -> "Shadowrun" only the cyber part was kept with the hacks etc - but the really interesting part with magic, elves, dwarves etc was left out... .. so why should a mod author who has implemented "real" flying in Skyrim - deal with cyberpunk?? If it were "shadowrun" ... he could realize "flying" in this world because it actually belongs to it my wife has "cyberpunk" - played it quite intensely... ..I, on the other hand, don't really warm to it. Something that might interest me for fetish reasons... ..the ballet boot prostheses are not in the standard game I understand your point of view, but I'm not sure that most modders are all that tied to a particular genre. I think most nerdy folks enjoy both mediaeval and modern/s-f fantasy genres (I know I do, I switch between games in those genres quite often), so the general interest will go with the newer game that has better options for modding. CP2077 isn't quite there yet, but what's being done is VERY promising (since the developers consulted the modders). Of course if the next Elder Scrolls game is next-gen like Cyberpunk, or even better, then the general interest will go there Edited January 4, 2023 by gurugeorge 1
Because the games are so badly programmed - but at the same time because of the "creation kit" they can also be easily modified. Despite all criticism of cyberpunk - it still contains far fewer bugs than any Fallout or TES game. Of course there will be mods for cybrpunk, but whether the game will be the focus of a large mod community for a whole decade of a century... ... myself and other users (see posts in this thread) doubt this. and of course - there are the mod authors who are flexible in terms of which game genre they modify - others are not.

Talking from a sex mod perspective, but can be applied to pretty much everything else as well: They're popular because they offer the opportunity for modders to indulge in whatever they fancy. Sure, we need script extenders and the like because nobody but Bethesda has access to the full dev tools, but lots of things are already in the base games simply waiting to be expanded. Think of all the NPC interaction mods, whether that be something like combat sex or anything that starts via dialogue, such as prostitution, extortion or whatever you can think of - the base game has fully interactive NPCs, no exceptions. They have their own schedule, their own scripted behavior and an inventory. The player character is special in the sense that the PC is controlled by an actual human, but all the basic functions are the same as any NPC, they can pick stuff up, equip it, loot containers and such. Tl;dr: Bethesda games offer persistent NPC systems which a modder can take advantage of, other games do not. That's also the reason why cities and settlements are scaled down massively compared to games like Witcher, GTA or Assassin's Creed. 5
woodsman30 Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 A question that has no real answer right or wrong depends on mod-able games and what can be modded ect. Skyrim has many flaws but the game creators handed over the keys and said make what ever you want. However the base Skyrim game is quite different in what it offers. How many games have you seen where every house can be entered and the house has people living in it with jobs all their own? None I have ever seen the game had a huge undertaking just to do that think about pathing meshes ect... For the most part all of Skyrim can be explored base game not modded .... mods of course the sky is the limit. Even fallout lacks what Skyrim brought to the table I cannot think of any game that give complete control like Skyrim can you?
And you can even create a completely new game with the basis of this game... ..a total conversion -> Enderal 1
KoolHndLuke Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 (edited) Honestly, it's been so long since a new Beth release that unless Starfield is a complete dog, it will challenge Skyrim modding in just a few years. I know a lot of MA's have said they're not interested, but something tells me that the buzz in Starfield modding community will lure them back. The biggest hurdle I see are paywalled mods. Less and less creators adhere to the cathedral approach anymore because Beth themselves don't even care to enforce their EULA. Fine for those of us that can afford the extra dime, but I would bow out on principle. The other problem with this is MA's divided and not creating things with compatibility in mind or willingness to offer patches. The Nexudus splintered the community even further to the point where it will be damned hard to put together a working LO without a lot of ass kissing and work. Edited January 4, 2023 by KoolHndLuke 4
Der Nexudus hat die Community noch weiter zersplittert, bis zu dem Punkt, an dem es verdammt schwer sein wird, ohne viel Arschküsse und Arbeit ein funktionierendes LO zusammenzustellen. a user here had written for exactly these (and other) reasons that the "golden" years of modding are over Ultimately, your text confirms his statement and no - I don't think it's nice myself - but I (and everyone else) have to accept it 1

Was thinking there will probably be a few "cherry" worlds out of that thousand Starfield boasts and that those will be what many modders focus on - which means potentially game-breaking conflicts. Wouldn't it be nice if a hosting site categorized mods with those conflicts brought to users attention? I mean.... it's not like the average user is going to know about them or will read the compatibility notes left by the author (assuming they post any). I'm sure it would be a very welcome (and appreciated ) feature by whatever hosting site implements it. Not implying LL do this of course because they simply don't have the staff or time (or funds perhaps). But it would be nice. Mods have changed in volume and complexity. Sites that host them would benefit from adapting. Edited January 4, 2023 by KoolHndLuke 1
I doubt that Starfield will generate as much interest as Skyrim, science fiction isn't as popular as fantasy. It's very much the same reason why Oblivion was more popular than FO3 / FNV and Skyrim moreso than FO4, despite the fantasy games being the older ones in every case. Mexicola88 Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 Starfield might attract more players and modders than the Fallout universe. Because even tho it is Sci-Fi like Fallout it's still completly different. The way it will be played is completly different from Fallout. I mean fuck we will be able to travel through space like in the Mass Effect series, and this with the good old Creation Engine. I mean the possiblites are endless. It will feel like a mix of Fallout, Mass Effect and Star Citizen or something like that. It doesn't play in that already totally overused Fallout universe that is stuck in the pseudo 50's anymore. I am looking forward to that game, it will be the highlight of the next 2-3 years, that is for sure. There is no other game that i am more excited for atm. GTA VI is still like 2 years away and that is for consoles, we PC players probably gotta wait till the year 2026. That will probably be moddable too again, cars, weapons, new map, roleplay stuff like that. But i always only played GTA V totally vanilla.
outcast Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 As it was said many times already - only TES6 and Starfield could beat Skyrim just because other game developers don't provide such simple and quite powerful modding tool like Bethesda does. And even these games will require years just to match Skyrim, after all it was around for 10 years and nexus alone has 70 thousand mods for LE and 60 thousand mods for SE.

On the original topic and building off what you wrote: if something is to replace Skyrim it has to be built by a team who wants to enable it from the get-go and not be worried about their brand being associated with naughty stuff.

I've been playing TESIV lately and the best part is taking huge, ridiculous leaps. I remember doing that in Morrowind back then, yeah it was fun jumping very high and far with maxed out Acrobatics Skill. I skipped Oblivion and then started playing Skyirm instead. While Oblivion was a thing other games had my attention somehow, played a lot of Battlefield 2 or whatever it was back then. I didn't know Oblivion also had that jumping mechanics.

With Acrobatics 100 you could even walk on water only it was endlessly difficult to get the skill up where and to get to the trainers much more difficult than in Sykrim -> access requirements!!

You couldn't do Icaran Flight province-spanning leaps, but what you could do was still fun. I remember I had one late game mage made a spell to fortify speed, athletics and acrobatics, and then ran from The Imperial City to Cheydinhal in under a minute, jumping over the heads of ogres and highwaymen at every crossroads. I miss that character 2
GrimReaper Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 (edited) 17 hours ago, RohZima said: Define "actual human." The person sitting in front of the screen and playing the game. If I wasn't clear, here's what I meant: Skyrim has a few levels of complexity when it comes to NPCs: Creatures and animals, such as dogs, wolves and atronachs. Those act most similar to NPCs in other games, they have little to no ability to interact with the game world. Humanoids, of which there are three versions. Draugr, Falmer and human or mer NPCs. Draugr don't have a fully functioning inventory, they can only swap weapons, from ranged to melee. Their abilities are locked depending on which variant spawns with which weapon, a draugr that is capable of casting frost spells isn't able to use both hands for casting if the other hand has a one handed weapon equipped, they also can't unequip a two handed weapon to cast spells. They have no armor, the different variants just have pieces of armor baked onto the model itself. Falmer are a step above draugr because they can equip actual armor which can also be looted from them, however, they also have no access to an inventory like "real" NPCs. Apart from the ability to use armor they are more or less the same as draugr. Then you have NPCs, like guards, shopkeepers and bandits. Those are, on a technical level, more or less the same as the PC. They have access to a full inventory (like the player), are able to equip weapons and armors at will (like the player), are able to pick up dropped items (like the player), are able to loot containers (like the player) and can use items that are in their inventory (like the player). To my knowledge, games from Bethesda are the only ones that go to the length to develop NPCs that have this levels of complexity. Most other games just use NPCs as window dressing, they are spawned and discarded as needed and neither have an inventory nor the ability to interact with the world outside of wandering around and attacking or talking to the player. It's a valid criticism that Skyrim (or Oblivion and Fallout) usually don't do much with these features. However, this isn't the point, it was about modding - any game that does not have the level of depth Skyrim has, like Cyberpunk, The Witcher or GTA won't be able to present the same foundation for modders to build upon. You couldn't, for instance, strip NPCs of their clothing because none of these games give NPCs an inventory, the clothes and or armor they use isn't really there, it's just visually baked onto the base model. One can even construct every house in a custom world in The Sims 3. As a benefit, the only other series that comes close to The Elder Scrolls or BGS Fallout in terms of modding is The Sims series whose mods are hosted far and wide. TS4 lacks the ability to change anything outside of playable lots so the modding potential is much lower than that of The Elder Scrolls games or even TS3, preventing anything approaching even the simplest of total conversion mods. There will never be a TS4 equivalent to Enderal, Nehrim or The Forgotten City because there can not be. Likely the reason why games such as Kenshi or Mount and Blade are not up there yet is the basic character interactions do not lend themselves well to interaction expansion modding as well as the previously mentioned franchises. 1
