WTF?!!

Yep, it's been that kind of year... and it doesn't look like sanity will be making a comeback anytime soon. This isn't a thread to hate on things, or to list grievances, or to be *happy* about anything. It's for those of us that left the 90's or early 2k's still being able to recognize some things about the world and the people in it that still made sense... and nooowwwww.....have little or no fucking clue what's going on or why. Perhaps I'm the only one here that feels this way. But just in case anyone else out there feels the same, do share what is perplexing you to no end. Doesn't have to be serious, more like the questions that have bothered you for awhile and just never got around to asking.

Edit; Note that LL doesn't like politics (again?), so don't even bother.

We had better quality television then, by the time we hit the 80s it was Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Rambo, Starman, The Last Starfighter, The Golden Child, Lethal Weapon, 48 Hours, The Naked Gun, Total Recall, Die Hard etc. What do we have now? "Keeping up with the Kardashians" on its 19th season. I'm not even going to touch music, that is just a "given". I mean how often do you re-watch The Hunger Games or Twilight? Fine I watched GoTs a bit too much, but given that fantasy shows don't usually look too good with the exception of Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit, I don't re-watch them as much as I do say Die Hard/Aliens which I've watched so much of I could almost recite the script.

Better quality or only quality?  I recall when four channels (ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX) became the standard (sure UHF always had PBS, but I hardly ever used the second dial).  If you didn't like Dallas, you had Falcon Crest, Dynasty or some news program to pick from on a Friday night.    That had the effect that we were all watching the same thing, so all those shows you mention, I know and can quote lines from.   We used to joke that one of the requirements to get into the School of Engineering in the 80s and 90s was that you had to be Asian, or you had to know the whole script from one or more Monty Python movies.    Having shared experiences meant that we shared some culture with everyone that had a TV, that meant that if a person from the opposite political party made a comment about "Space 1999", I knew I was dealing with a fellow Sci Fi fan and could ask "Hey have you read <X> from Isaac Asimov yet?".    Having that kind of  connection allowed us to see each other as people with more things in common than differences.

I don't know if Europe had something similar to this for their TV sets, but in the US, the old TVs had this kind of control panel.

TV before cable. One dial for channels 2-13, one dial for ...

I feel like the past 10 years has gone from "things are normal" to "wtf is even going on?". Such a short amount of time.

Or maybe I've just become more aware of the bigger picture, and things were always on course to turn out this way, I don't know.

2020, though... If someone had told me the events of this year would come to pass I would not have believed it. Even less so the way the "Land of the Free" has proven not to feel so free in recent times.

The saying "There is nothing to fear but Fear itself" is proving extremely apt as many of the problems in the world right now are the result of poor reactions and over-reactions to fear, be it irrational or not.

If things fall apart, it is not because the world really was worse off than it was at any point in the past but because people make everything worse 'for the greater good' or to avert supposed imminent disaster.

I get on my knees and pray, we won't get fooled again...

We still have the music at least. But everything always seems better in hindsight. You ever heard a scathing eulogy? "And he did cheat on his wife and abuse his children, and gambled the family fortune away. Nay, none will miss him." :smirk:

Is it still customary to get a reacharound when your getting fucked from behind? Or are assholes so completely narcissistic now that they expect you to break your back bending back under to lick their balls?

"This can't get worse" and then...boom.

Can you say "whiplash". I can't even watch the news anymore it's so depressing. If *TRIGGERED* were an ice cream flavor, it'd be all the rage right now.

If you were born in the western world in the last 60 years, life has never been easier at any time in known human history.  What I observe of many people in these times is they seem to walk through life with their eyes closed and then they cry and blame anyone else when they step in shit.

I miss my lg chocolate, and more broadly, dislike the dearth of good dumb phones/prevalence of smartphones. I lack the self discipline to have a smartphone and still accomplish meaningful work, and the only dumb phone my carrier uses is noticeably cheaper and less well built than my old chocolate was, but meh, it gets the job done I guess.

Before cable, like in Poltergeist, TV broadcasting generally went 'off air' around 2AM. So for some of us we were lucky to have stations whom adopted an 'all night' programming on certain days. For me, it was Saturday night. Come home after partying and turned on the Bob Shreve's Past Prime Playhouse. Looking at it now it makes me think we had a version of YouTube LONG before the internet existed. After cable became the norm, most stations had adopted all night programming but it shifted to all night commercials masquerading as entertainment - that's a big WTF?
