Read the books, play the games. I've done both mostly, so I'm just happy to see anything Witcher anymore.

Honestly, doesn't seem like something i'll like. I did play the game on a friend's console and it was... strange. But hey good for you man, hope you have a good time and all.

You've got some selectively shit sources as usual then because it's already beaten the record set by Stranger Things 3 in by-through views and third party ratings.

Instead of hearing you could be watching and then making up your own mind, I hear it's all the rage these days.

I don't care enough which show on Netflix beats what other show on Netflix and neither do i care if you think my "sources" are shit or not. It's not like i dug super deep into this matter anyway, i only know stuff from user comments and what not.

In order for me to start watching something i check beforehand if it appeals to me, if the initial impression sucks then i have no reason to dig any deeper.

I admit that it does get carried too far sometimes. It's paranoia probably from the show's producers so they don't get labeled as racist bigots. Isn't it cool that we're subtly and quietly changing/rewriting history as we go along to appease the masses? You know....because the truth sucks. Reminds me of the decision in FO3 about project purity. You make the decision and deal with the consequences. :classic_wink:

a little strange it is already, when the Polish Witcher film and the subsequent series was shot, was the book writer Andrzej Sapkowski not good to speak of.
only when the games appeared He attained world fame, before that very few knew His books!
suddenly appears The Witcher on Netflix, made in America, *if I should be wrong please correct*.
In any case has Netflix or whoever, more money available as a small Polish film studio!
and the joke at the Thing Andrzej Sapkowski sits in the boat from Netflix, and suddenly everything is possible, strange actors "Skin color" not true to the story etc.

I as a book author would go up in the air.

lol and the series is being shot in Poland.

now possible, Poland is no longer socialist. :classic_wink:

You can obviously draw parallels to the english word 'hex' which isn't that unusual since english and german have the same indo-european roots.

A hex is a type of spell in British English though it seems to retain the 'practice witchcraft' in American English.

There are lots of Old- and High-German words in the English language - courtesy of the Saxons probably.

I know 2 of them :classic_angel:

yes, you and I know the books, they were first published in Germany in 1993.

Spoiler

but what about the rest of the world, japan, china, korea, america etc?
to this time point there were no games yet, so know most people do not even that these books exist.

only this time for the western market, a lot of SinglePlayer content, and especially a completely normal combat system without Asian frills. :classic_wink:

you're right, but is there anything comparable, that will appear in the near future?
my time of computer games is coming to an end, I will 63 years, for action-packed games, my reflexes are no longer sufficient, therefore not a cyberpunk for me.

The miscasts are so many I can't bear to watch it.

Since she seems to be the focus of most criticism, I wonder if they'll cast someone else in that role for next season? It's become somewhat controversial at this point. We'll see if they stick to their guns or maybe do even worse as a "fuck you" to fans. It is Netflix after all.

Ciri has plenty of time left.

Also miscast implies the actress they got can't play Fringilla, which is flat ass wrong. She's playing Fringilla p much on the money. The only straight miscast on the show is Triss and in this instance this is Triss before she realized exactly how obtuse Foltest actually is, and before Temeria became the line against Nilfgaard and Triss had to start getting her shit together. Triss is also not written anything like the books aside from being proficient at the Sphere of Nature, which you can't blame on the actress.

The chance of her being recast is p much zero unless she leaves the show of her own volition.

I have read the books and I know that Triss only plays a role on the margins, almost without meaning.
but for me the books were without a face, I must see to imagine something.
then came the Witcher Games trilogy and especially, I itself could perform my own story!
and for me Triss is more important than Yennefer.
I love Triss. :classic_wink:

There were 2 short story books. Storys are in chronological order. ( one or two stories with Ciri )

Then a short novel , 1 book.
And then the main novel in 5 books. ( The whole Ciri story and "death" of Geralt. Geralt and Yenn leave the world )

And Magic in the Books was often not spectacular.

Except for a demon summoning / taming  that lasted a whole night and almost completely destroyed a house.  And the Mage "war" in the MageGuild.

And no stupid glowing, aura, sparkling  you just see the result of a spell ( fire, storm, hail,..)

Oh I missed a book:

Polish title of the book: Coś się kończy, coś się zaczyna.  ( german: Etwas endet, etwas beginnt .  english : Something Ends, Something Begins )

8 stories. The book is not in chronological order with the other books. One story is about his parents, another about the wedding with Yenn.

And Winny: Triss plays a  important role in the 5 main books. In the mage school with Ciri, the intrigues of the sorceresses  and at the end she fights together with Yenn against the citizens of Riva ( death of Geralt ). And she is also in some of the short stories.

Spoiler
Triss Merigold of Maribor - a sorceress who was also called the "Fourteenth of the Mountain" because it was mistakenly assumed that she was killed during the Battle of Sodden Mountain. She was a friend of Yennefer's and unhappily in love with the witcher Geralt von Riva. She had been taking care of Ciri for a while and treated her like her sister. Triss is also a member of the Sorceress' Lodge. Together with Fercart and Keira Metz, she belongs to the royal staff of King Foltest.

There are only 3 main characters , Geralt, Ciri. and Dandelion (Rittersporn, Jaskier) .  ( and some who don't survive. ) Yenn is in captivity most of the time in the 5 main books.

And Translations:  Czech Republic, Slovenia, Russia, Lithuania, Germany, France, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Great Britain and USA. ( In english the last book of the main series was published 2017 !   18 years after the Polish original )

I hope they are not "creative" !

If there is a book with white people and only male main characters and only action...  and a movie/series is made...
First they add a female main character, then a love story, and some jokes and humor, then a black and a asian character, and one of the men must be gay  and  maybe for the animal friends a dog. ( A little bit for everyone, and another popcorn movie )

If there is a book you have the script for the film. Please no "creativity" from a stupid director or producer.

Remember Lord of the Rings. (Peter Jackson version)
Yes, good landscape, good actors, the sword fights are excellent, the computer animations and effects fabulous...  but that wasn't Lord of the Rings.
The beginning was a catastrophe, then weather top,   Elfs in Helms Deep! , Undead at the Battle of Minas Tirith,...
A letter was published in which Tolkien criticized the first LotR film ( the Cartoon version from the 70s )
And if you read this letter and then watch the Peter Jackson film ...
Peter added exactly the things in his film that Tolkien had criticized.
And while Peter was writing the script, he thought "You old man are dead, you can't criticize my film. I shit on your grave."
From the Hobbit, I've only seen some previews... and I got sick.

So please, if the film is supposed to be a film adaptation of the book, no "creativity".  ( But I'm sure that directors will never learn that. )

.................
Back to the witcher:
Zerrikania are not black, only light brown ( with tattoos )
In the books are only two Zerrikanias, Tea and Vea.  So why add people of other cultures, races, skin colors ? Why insert into a story where there are no such people?

Think of Europe 200 to 300 years ago and try to find a black in germany, Scandinavia or Poland.
There are no trains or planes in the Witcher books. No talk of colonial times and overseas colonies. No slaves from foreign countries.
So if you add blacks or asians then you first have to create / add new countries in the witcher "universe" , and then you have to explain how the people came to Kaedwen, Redania or Temeria.
Ok that is creative but has nothing to do with the books and is not lore friendly.

------------------------------------------

So I prefer books.  Characters, landscape, clothes, fights, ... everything looks perfect, and always better than in a movie. ( if you have a little fantasy and imagination. )

Link to comment

Yes, but fantasy worlds have a history, lore, races,... like the real world. ( Yes there are bad fantasy books with just a hero , some monsters and a lot of action )

But if you don't care watch the next world war 2 movie with black and asian german soldiers.  The army cook is gay and there is a women unit. So you can add the love story ....

Hey why not? Japan was Germany's ally  and Italy had African colonies...  you must only ignore the german racist ideology and the women in the army and that the cook would be dead . . .   but hey it's just a movie, let the director be a little creative

I was just a little upset because Wolfstorm321 hoped that Netflix was "creative" and would change the story of the book.

If Netflix don't like the Witcher books they should rename the Title, characters and countries,  and we get a good fantasy movie and nobody can complain about inaccurate, wrong or not lore friendly.

If a director wants to write his own story, why does he have to pretend that his film has something to do with a currently popular book?  Yes I know, for sales.

----------------------------------------------

And I do not watch movie of good books.  So I don't think that I will watch the Witcher series.

And I know that a 100% "movie = book"  is impossible in most cases, so it has to be shortened and some characters from the book may be deleted. And that is OK.

Hmm? Where did I said that? I said the exact opposite. You cant expect any creativity coming from Netflix. Actually, you cant expect it from any film maker, as yourself pointed out. Because these cliches you mentioned are far from being creative, they are just repetition. That is why I didnt watch any movie in the last six months, at the very least.

They could make a series with entire different characters, set in the Witcher universe, and put a old Geralt teaching these new witchers. Then feature one or two zerrikanians to not appear "racist".

Western cinema is a joke, it panders to political agendas, that is why is so bad. All this political pandering prevents any attempt at a adaptation from the books. Much better that they would go for a entire new story than taint a already know one.

If their problem is the lack of black people, there is material for it in the lore.

Is not that hard to create a new character. But you cant expect creativity coming from Netflix.

There is not enough material really.

According to this Zerrikanian women described as tattooed from head to toe yet their skin color not mentioned at all (and this would be the first thing one would mention). People in the commentaries argue about them been Central Asian due to the fact that three of them appears to have blond hair (also people say that this as well as light eyes is a common trait for Central Asia).

Which is nonsense cause natives of Central Asia are typical Asians in appearance and never have blond hair or light eyes. Only Russians there sometimes have. Russians of course not native to Central Asia and still there due to the Imperial and Soviet colonization.
