With all the stuff going on regarding CC - Should I buy?

I've been behind the times for a while and never picked up Fallout 4 at release. Still haven't played it to this day, although I loved F3 and NV. I just recently read about all the stuff going on with their latest Creation Club patch breaking the script extender and basically trying to kill the free modding community and monetize what's left. From what I'm reading, Bethesda basically gave the modding community the middle finger. That gives me a really bad impression of the company I once respected, because let's be honest, very few players are buying Oblivion or Skyrim (SE or LE, regardless) for only the vanilla experience.

With all of that in mind, should I buy Fallout 4? It's about $40 right now for the entire game and all DLC so it's a good deal, but is modding even an option, outside of the paid CC mods (which I won't purchase, on principle alone)? It looks like F4SE has been updated to the latest version, but should I expect that most mods aren't going to cooperate right now since they'll all need to be updated to work with the latest version of F4 and F4SE?

Just looking for guidance and opinions here. What would you do if you hadn't played F4 yet and saw all this going on? Thanks in advance.

People will still publish mods outside CC.

Mostly on LLab and Nexus (and also a few asian sites.)

Some people liked the game, some loved it, some said it was a waste of money.

Many people said it was zero compared to FNV. (Never played FNV so I cannot really give you my own opinion on that.)

Until mods downloaded from here or elsewhere will be possible to be installed, then it is worth as a game.

$40 with all DLCs is still a little bit too much in my opinion but starts to be a reasonable price (myself I spent the money for the pre-order and the money for the season pass. Keep in mind I never played Nuka World DLC, also if I have it.)

Everybody will coexist.....mods, creative club,

Already they will correct some mistake from their part on pc

I give them the benefits of doubt and will continue to support them.

And if one day there is a fantastic must have mod on creative club then i will buy it just like i donate to some mods at nexus and support loverslabs soon when i finish reading how patreon works...

People can't think past the choices they don't understand. If CC had been the basic principle of modding from the get go none of us would be here, simply b/c this site would not exist, at least not in the form we know it. And none of us will be here to play new games when it becomes the principle, that is what is actually grinning at you on the horizon, despite all your hopes for a peaceful coexistence. There will be none at the end of the day, I'm sorry to say that. Once they have a foot in the door of the com it's either their way or the highway. And some of our modders and their fan clubs are consciously playing a crucial role in the upcoming disaster. I can already hear the new slogan in the com - If you want something done, do it yourself. Yep!  Who still wants to share or care about anything for free when the sheep are happily lined up for the fleecing, hmm? In that case mind tricks won't work on those anymore who know the stuff. Only money. No money, no help, no deal!

Now it's up to you to decide the future of modding, one way or another. Don't even think you could have your cake and eat it too...

For me time has come to stop buying their games. I mean, with Morrowind and skyrim they definitely made my life a better one but honestly I don't like where games are going. Buying stuff in-game and shit. I remember a time when you bought a PC game you got everything, and not just a menu of stuff with prices where you can add shit. My luck there are people like razer.

I don't have any words for this

Until someone predicting the end of all modding can accurately predict the lottery numbers for me i'm personally taking all such predictions with a very large grain of salt

I brought Fallout 4 as part of a bundle (game + season pass + all previous fallout games for £40) and i've been able to mod it with stuff from nexus and here without touching the creation club so if you don't want to use it the option to not use it is there

I've not heard of the creation club itself breaking the script extender, its the new patches coming out from beth (some of which are to fix creation club issues) which are breaking it as script extender has a version check in it so the general advise at the moment is to set fallout 4 to update only on game launch and then never launch it from steam

I honestly believe that most of the issues with Creation Club are blown dramatically out of proportion.  The entire idea was for modders who wanted to be paid to have an organic way of being able to get paid for what they do.  The big difference is that to use those specific mods you have to pay as opposed to authors who run patreon or something similar only being paid if you opt to do so.

I will admit that the execution was not the most convenient due to how the script extender does a version check but the work around is very simple to do.  The only offence I've personally taken is how many mods on creation club have a completely free counterpart that much higher quality like the hellfire armor.  I wish Bethesda's quality control people would do a much better job of filtering out the stupid stuff and made it clear that a paint job for the pipboy was not going to cut it.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I've decided I'm going to just buy it, $40 is kind of a drop in the bucket for what I'm sure will end up being another thousand hour game for me.

My next question is a bit noobish: What's the difference between the GOTY edition and the base game with Season Pass? The price would be around the same (a slight bit more for base+season pass but not much). I've done a bit of googling but I'm not turning up much information on what each version actually includes. There's a list of the extra DLC content you get in the GOTY edition, but there's no such list for the Season Pass. All of the discussion threads I'm finding related to this question seem to be focused on consoles and whether or not you can transfer your DLC's if you upgrade to a newer console. I'm a PC player so that truly does not apply to this situation.

Just looking to not screw myself here by buying the wrong thing and being stuck having to shell out more money for content I should have just purchased in the first place. As I understand it, the Season Pass includes any and all DLC that's ever been (or will ever be, if there's any future stuff) released. The GOTY edition only seems to come with a handful of DLCs and some voucher codes for other things (I think?)

Is there actually a difference between the two? I really wish companies would make these things more clear. It's one of my biggest complaints against DICE (developers of the Battlefield series), because every time they release a new game they have like 4 or 5 different versions of the game which each include different tiers of content unlocks, until a year or so after release when they finally offer a Premium version that includes everything. It's like... c'mon folks. Just give us one damn price for the lot of it, drop the nickel and dime routine.

Anyway, /endrant.

Which should I buy? Base game (14.99) + Season Pass (29.99), or GOTY Edition (41.99)?

EDIT: Nevermind. Found a clear answer, finally. Looks like GOTY should have everything since development is apparently done for FO4. Someone compared the GOTY edition to the final Skyrim Legendary Edition update (before they went SSE). That's good enough for me.

Posted

Had a look but can't see any difference, if i click on the GOTY version it says i have everything in library already so other than making it a bit easier to buy/promote the GOTY version seems to be Fallout4 + Season pass, doesn't seem to be anything in there that i didnt get as part of season pass

I found Fallout 4 to be extremely boring and just not very fun. It's not really a roleplaying game.

Sure, you level up, you get more health and do more damage. The ability to play your character though, is non-existent. Everything is all centered around combat.

New Vegas is still my Go to fallout game..

Sadly i agree with this and kept lying to myself that i liked it. I still enjoyed fallout 4 overall but not enough to stay. I have about 800 hours, 700 of those mostly modding and testing but im moving on to Skyrim SE.

I can draw a lot of parallels between FONV and FO4:

- Main quest can be completed within a few hours if side quests are ignored

- See most of the map during the main quest (FO4 you can see far less of it if you ignore most of the settlement building but FONV you see most of it no matter what and very quickly)

- With the exception of the Minutemen in FO4 the rest of the factions in FO4 and FONV are not really the good guys unless you buy into their ideology. Basically you choose who you want to back, do their questline and they win.

- Followers with their own goals and quests

I prefer to do exploration so and with mods available for FO3 that added interiors to a lot of DC (same thing is going on for FO4) and the amount of space not touched by the main quest in FO3 it leaves plenty of places to explore. FO4 has a good amount of places to explore but most typically have a settlement somewhere nearby but there is still enough to see that keeps me wandering. FONV was empty for the most part and had little to explore.

So for me FO3 > FO4 > FONV

As to the original poster about purchasing things off of the CC, if you like it and can't find a mod that does the same thing as well if not better then go for it but you won't find much of anything on the CC that is worth it unless you just have to have the items they ported from previous Fallout games that have not already been released in as a mod.

Yea same. It's been hard for me to figure out why I dislike it.

On paper it has all the things I would want from a Fallout game.. I think it really comes down to the lack of skills / dialogue and the emphasis on combat and radiant quests.

The Go to 'X' and kill 'Y' themed content is sooo boring compared to New Vegas's thoughtful and in-depth quests. ㅋㅋㅋ

1000 hours out of F04 seems pretty optimistic to me. I got to 250 hours and lost

interest; nothing to do except visit settlements and wipe the settler's asses for

them. I couldn't create a character that I found attractive, and the base game

discourages roleplaying.

I got 600 hours and most of that was with mods, and settlement builder. Pro's = Settlement building is fun but becomes boring when you finally stop lying to yourself that they have importance. 2.) combat is solid I love slogging matches, gun fights that are hard and long catch my attention, FONV had lots of them and so did FO3. Its smooth but it to suffers from lack of importance. 3.) character customization definitely a plus you will see. 4.) armor layer system this is a wonderful aspect you will enjoy.

CON's 1.) MQ this would have been great with a silent protagonist I couldnt ignore this as I quote from conversation I had with a friend "you dont have to do it just ignore it and move on elsewhere". its really hard to ignore the MQ when every single follower and person practically reminds you of it, and how the character (you) practically breaks down over some (SPOILER) Kid who you knew for 5 minutes EVERY DAMN time. I am a god dam raider JIM!!!! not a mommy, sorry to those that are just felt so detached from this even my little one hates this. 2.) underwhelming. The game without the MQ considerations could have been a rock solid knock them other FO games outta the water type but with playing for a while and avoiding many of the population centers, even your own settlements you feel empty playing it. most of the content is gone the feeling of this is a RPG/adventure is somehow lying in a hospital bed rolled to one side not looking at you cause it knows it is dying. 3.) crafting this could have worked but why is it with each new Beth game the weapons steadily get thicker and more massive I feel like im playing WOW with massive oversized weapons that no normal person would be able to use. I thank the gods that idle-sheep was around for his guns saved my game play.

Now is this game worth your money Ill leave that too you. But I dont hate this game I just feel like it was half baked and I ate the parts that were baked properly, 400 hours game-play on vannilla is a bit of stretch if you follow their claims. I forced most of it with wonderful mods made by some wonderful folks from here in LL and nexus. I just cant force my self to play when the only thing I enjoyed till it made me sick was settlement building, Sigird's stripper gun shop will open again but not for sometime. its an okay game mate just not a great game.

Posted

Okay, I might be an oddity here but I've got 1533 hours played in FO4.  Of course I've got all the DLC and played every vanilla quest I could find as well as mods and unlike Outlast1 I didn't like the whole settlement building process and just did enough to get the settlers to survive.

I really think the biggest problem people have with FO4 is the way you are really pigeon holed into the main quest line and while the voice acting was an interesting twist it really took the great open world RPG you had in FO3, FNV and the TES series and turned it into a semi-open world concept with a more linear progression towards the main quest end goal.

Can the game be played without doing the main quest, yes it can easily be done but like previously mentioned everyone seems to try to steer you towards the main quest.

As for the Creation Club, I don't see why everyone is throwing such a fit over it.  You don't have to purchase anything from the CC and from what I understand most of what you can get from the CC is a subpar version of a very similar mod which can be found elsewhere for free.  While they will never admit it I really think the CC is steered more towards the X1/PS4 players than the PC players.

I bought the main game and the season pass and feel I've gotten my money's worth and I bought when it first came out.  Now that the prices have dropped I would say if you think you'll enjoy the game then buy it.

imagine following.

bethesda employees creating accounts that looks like normal users.

these accounts uploading mods for low amounts of money, like 99 cents or some.

you buy a game for 50€.

you buy addons for each 10 or 15€.

you start buying "files" for 1€..many files.

so you end up with 150€ for a game.

wtf.

Yeah, but CC stuff is subpar to the free stuff out there by the modding community, ps4 players can't get any of the mods pc users have access to, hence why I said CC is more for those and x1 players than the pc players who have much better options available to them.

Some people liked the game, some loved it, some said it was a waste of money.

Many people said it was zero compared to FNV. (Never played FNV so I cannot really give you my own opinion on that.)

Meh, same people say FONV was zero compared to FO3 and FO3 was zero compared to FO2 and FO2 was zero compared to FO1 which was zero compared to Wasteland :P

Same principle as with music styles, the individual imprint depends on what game of a franchise one plays first and  liked it, esp. during puberty when feelings are most intense and new impressions get sucked up like a sponge. So, as a rule of thumb, folks that still favor FO1 over anything that came after are much, much older than those who favor FO3 over anything that came before and  after, and so on and so forth. Thus I liked Morrowind most because I'm in my late 20s and the game was my first of the franchise. Just a few years younger (or started later) and I'd probably raise my hand for the prefab Oblivion. Critique of the own game preference is understood in a mere negative fashion, though much critique of all other games of the franchise is always welcome...  just to subsequently justify the own imprinted preference and feel better. Know thyself.

Role playing requires a role actor as player capable of playing different roles (and with that different hairstyles and body shapes ain't meant). So, to play F04 one should forget about the own situation one might be in, e.g. living as an adult with the parents as sponsors. If you simply can't switch roles, walking for a mile in the moccasins of sb. you are not and  never want to become, well, then you shouldn't play a scripted role playing game or better forget about the Beth script as such which, in turn, requires much own imagination not to get lost on the grid. It is as simple as that.

1. Bear in mind, FNV devs had to finish the game in about one (1) year. Not in their standard 5 year cycle. That's why FNV world space appears to be quite empty. You just ignore anything not related to the most important quests to make it on time.

2. Personally I think voiced character can stay, but as a one liner. "I can't open this lock", "I need a medic" "Ah, damn, barred from behind". That way we could have several voice types like high or low pitched, always pissed, sarcastic and some such.

We really don't need every radiant unimportant quest voiced with several megabytes of MC's speech.

3. Just like most other I felt completely disconnected with Nate's/Nora's parenthood. I just couldn't find in myself enough willpower to look for an infant I barely saw for a moment and poof. This would be a great hook if a player would see a random baby stolen and decided to find it, enabling you to explore the wastes. But since it would not be yours, it would not be weird to just forget about a quest and go in your merry ways.

4. Main plot quest line: when I played for the first time and a vault elevator went up to the surface I said as a joke: I bet this kid will be <spoiler>. I wish I could see my face when my joke was not a joke and this was the story ...

5. Way too much combat. Everywhere, with everything and everyone at any time. Almost absolute lack of non combat related quests. Or rather there are some, but they are drown in the rain of lead or lazor beams.

6. SHOULDER CAM !!! FFS The way it was implemented made me nauseous after like two hours of game-play max.

To conclude:

For me this game looks like not a single team member questioned any decisions that were made during development stage. Whatever team leader said went into the game.

"Better not to question John's decision or we end up like Tom. On the street." That kind of mentality.

My own advice: don't fall to this "creation club" nonsense. There will always be strict equivalent outside for free with better quality. So keep your hard earned US$ or € or £.
