Hi, so I've been looking into this issue for a bit and it seems I'm running into the classic "Win11 + Vortex" CTD. The difference is, I'm already using MO2 on Win10. Regardless, I tried using every file version in the download page, including the v2.21b intended to mitigate this issue for vortex users

 

I noticed the error message is slightly different than one posted above:

Whereas that one says "0x7FF7225A38F0 Fallout4.exe+1B938F0"

Mine says "0x7FF76800135B Fallout4.exe+016135B"

 

Not sure if that matters, but thought it might indicate an issue in a different file or something.

 

I can recreate the CTD perfectly though

1. Because I am using a downpatched fo4.exe a message appears saying "A new version is available for download"

2. Without touching anything, this message goes away (probably not directly related, but just shows consistent timing)

3. Approximately 1 second after the message goes away (stopwatch show 1.2x seconds across three seperate attempts) the game promptly closes

 

I'm wondering if this is some kind of compatibility issue, as I am using an otherwise stable (to my best knowledge) load order with 500+ mods. Neither Mo2, nor Fo4edit seem to indicate any file conflicts though, so I' also wonder what kind of mod conflictions you might suspect, if any.

Starting the AAF installation, following the first steps of the guide, checking if the game runs after all enabled mods. Right after Vioxi's, I install the Torture Devices v2.21 and get a crash on startup:

"Unhandled exception "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" at 0x7FF6DDFF38F0 Fallout4.exe+1B938F0"


Disabling/uninstalling doesn't fix this, changing deployment method didn't fix this, I need to delete the steam game folder and paste the version right before the installation of Torture Devices v2.21, then it starts up normally (also, rebooting the pc after the the uninstallation might have helped one time, but, mostly, I deleted the folder and copied a backup). I am using the downgraded version, windows 11 and vortex. If anyone can help, would appreciate it, thanks in advance!

This is a known issue, if you read back through the thread a bit, the specific combo of Win11 and vortex is known to cause CTD. You can try v2.21b which is the mod authors best attempt at a fix for now, but as far as I know, the only reliable way to fix it is switching to Mo2 for your mod organization needs.

Thanks! Already tried the 2,21b version, no luck there. 
Just, if I may ask here, 'cause, it's not much related - how painful is the transition to MO2? I managed to streamline my vortex modding experience for a lot of games (the collections feature is a godsend for reinstalls) - does MO2 has some integration feature / backport option from vortex or do i need to manually reinstall my mods? Is there a difference in MO2 as to how mods are sorted / priority? And, also, is there a chance this will be fixed by Vortex team or whoever, so that I can be spared this? (jk) 😂

Also, if i would download an earlier version, then shan't it be fixed then?

i am not skilled at all in using mods from lovers lab, how do i install this? very sorry to ask but installation is not very clear to me (i am dumb) and not used to drag and dropping files.

so, I have found out this was the mod that causes my game to go down upon startup, I learned this from testing out by installing mods 1 by 1. I use vortex and i am on windows 11. Does anyone know a fix for this? Do i need to use Mod Manager rather than Vortex for it to work? I mainly want the commonwealth captives mod and this mod is a requirement. If the only way around the crash is to use Mod Manager then obviously I'll make the change. I do not know much of modding other than simply downloading them. Hope to get a reply

I am still kind of amazed that things like that happen tho, given that TD isn't doing anything special that no other mod does...

Same here.  The Buffout logs imply that the problem happens when the game tries to load certain files in the Data\Meshes\AnimTextData tree at startup.  I suspect it has something to do with Vortex's virtual file system implementation.  But plenty of other mods include those text files and they don't have any issues with Vortex.

 

I'd try harder to reproduce and find some kind of workaround for it, but it only happens with Vortex, and honestly Vortex just plain sucks.  I tried using it for Starfield when that game first came out, but it was so clunky and unfriendly that I just installed everything manually until the GitHub version of NMM got updated to support Starfield.

To fix the issue with vortex you can click the purge mods button, remove the offending mod, then deploy again.

 

A workaround then is to install the mod manually, but if you do get the issue you then need to purge the files manually to get it working again (purge button will no longer fix it since vortex is no longer managing the mod, but it _does_ make it much easier to handle since then only the manually installed mod will be there). And it affects at least some other mods (zazout4 repack I know of).

 

And when I installed zazout through vortex, breaking it, I also had to manually clean up torturedevices to fix it, so it's kind of a pain. But seems to work fine once you figure out which mods need to be installed outside vortex (and less of a pain than switching manager).

 

Edit: Side note, I use hardlinking in vortex. Not sure if that affects this.

 

Edit edit: More generally it seems any mod with the AnimTextData files will crash the game if managed through vortex (and that should also be the only folder you need to clean up manually)

hey hey im also having problems with this mod

i reinstalled all my mods via vortex today (also torturedevices).. when i started fo4 it crashed in the intro screen

then i deinstalled all mods deinstalled vortex

checked my fo4 data on steam in case i deleted something else

installed f4se

downloaded MO2+ requirements then installed all mods again in MO2 and my game is still crashing in the intro screen..

how can i fix this?

Nevermind i got it fixed installing Armor and Weapon Keywords Community Resource (AWKCR) :D

this mod works fine "except" for one thing... nothing happens when a settler is in one of the crosses, i cant talk to them and have the standart commands, but that's it. Even with the scenes playing manually, the crosses are not one of the "furniture" 

 

But your mods are fantastic EgoBallistic!!

fantastic. Works like a charm. Staple in my LO. 

However, i just came across one Commonwealth Captive in a very provocative position on a torture device from this mod. 

instead of talking to them, can we take advantage of their "position"?

i know ...but its too tempting not to fck em while they are strapped in. 

it would be awesome if the captors (supermutants/raiders) had their fun time with them too. 

same with captives brought to settlements and kept in torture devices, settlers randomly have their way with the captives in the torture devices.

future update idea i guess??

AAF ignores actors in furniture as well as furniture that is currently in use as far as i know.

Which is indeed quite a bummer and a behavior i noticed after creating those furnitures...

@Modtester 111 they found a fix (apparently it is related to file/folder permissions) and they kindly provided the commands ran to correct permissions in this post:

New Version 2.22 Uploaded

  • Fixed bug in PlayRandomTDIdle() that could cause no animation to player
  • Changed file permissions in AnimTextData folder to hopefully fix CTD on some Windows 11 + Vortex setups
