>"no obnoxious politics packaged along with it"

>links 1942 communist military choir

The song's about a distressed soldier complaining that his sweetheart is not writing him letters anymore, and everybody else is trying to cheer him up.

Communists have souls too! <- bad attempt at a joke here

Don't let the year fool ya.

If I was not clear enough about the politics, I'll explain with examples:

BAD:

- Voroshilov's song

- Blowing in the WInd

GOOD:

- When we were at war

- Yellow rose of Texas

- In the early morning rain

- Sing to me

It was that damn Russian Jody! I was just ribbing you. Or, to quote Nietzsche, ""Evil men have no songs." How is it, then, that the Russians have songs?"  :P

Every once in a while I listen to some music from that era. Here's one, also about a soldier's girl, Erika, and the flower of the same name that he keeps (In english lyrics they would probably both be 'heather'), which reminds him that back at home the girl weeps for him.

Of course it's a marching song, so without understanding the lyrics it is less interesting than complex compositions.

I've always liked this song; it's from a movie released around seventeen years ago. (The original song must be much older).

But then I read the comments on an older version of the song, and I got all apprehensive thinking of all the hidden meanings.

Wagner (I can't spell it) was in an episode of Hogan's heroes and in the movie "excalibur".

I only really liked Beethoven after his movie came out.

Listening to music is something I just don't do often, unless some person who knows a whole lot more about music puts it into the soundtrack (like Ocean's 11 or 12).

Besides classic music, i like also opera crossover, celtic and epic. Everything that is good for dreaming.

Nothing from "mainstream" and surely not for everyone.

Lots. Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Willie Nelson, Billie Holiday, The Ink Spots, Simon and Garfunkel, Disturbed (lol), Chuck Berry, and Russian Classical Music are what I currently have on my iPod. Although I have a Peete Seeger record playing on my turntable while I type this! I tend to pick specific artists from all genres who I like, rather than listening to lots of artists from one genre.

As small child i grew up with the sounds of 60s - 70s from my mom and dad's cassete recorder collections. So deep the influence that i tend to (wrongly) judge afterward musics by 60s - 70s standards and regard the musics from the era was the best thing human culture ever produced...

But then during my puberty (1990s) i start to develop taste for music of that era and maybe this is a taste of my own, smthing i developed independently.

Now i like both the era and fond of wide array type of musics, from something like this...

to this...

I listen to a lot of different genres...A lot of VGM and electronic music (trance, chiptune, techno, NO dubstep) A decent amount of rock (A Perfect Circle, She Wants Revenge, Static X, various others) My favorites are japanese (Snowkel, AKFG). Obscure music as well with unique genres (Bubblegum Octopus, Pengosolvent, many others).

I used to be really into metal, but I eventually felt most metal sounded the same, guess I got burnt out on it and I'm more into upbeat music now.  I still listen to my favorite metal bands though (Bishop of Hexen, Brimstone, Verjnuarmu, Natur, Powerwolf, White Wizzard, Wolf, Summoning).

I have eclectic tastes, ranging from Hard rock to Folk and even some country:

Rush - the older stuff was amazing, newer has been good but not great

Black Sabbath - especially before Ozzy left the band

Linkin Park - especially their first 4 albums

Nightwish

Within Temptation

Abney Park - Airship Pirates was great from start to finish

Great Big Sea - everything except their last 2 albums

Dixie Chicks

I'm rly into metal/Arch enemy, also music great for workout.

Alissa's voice has so much power.

Not trying to start a flamewar, i love Arch Enemy with Alissa, but especially when it comes to power i still prefer Angela.

Alissa has the better technique and clearer vocals, but clear vocals aren't exactly what i search in metal, often quite the opposite. ;)

I sometimes listen to music while working and not beeing able to understand the lyrics is often a pro then. :D

*edit: and a band i accidently found a couple of years ago, at least this video has reached quite high numbers since then:
