Shadowhawk827 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 This might sound like a noob question, but what does the acronym "ENB" stand for and what does it do? Eat up system resources and crash your game. Not that my past experiences with it made me cynical or anything, lol.
Jexsam Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 It's actually two things; a dick-measuring system, and a crutch for screenshooters. Having a beefy ENB is a measurable way of showing off how powerful your rig is. It can produce things colors and lighting that looks dark and grim, bright and happy, "realistic", and occasionally even good. For some, making Skyrim look like photos taken IRL at Yellowstone or Denali is a badge of honor, a way to say "I have a better rig than you because [a] I have more money I have poor impulse control [c]I'm 16 and have rich parents [d] all of the above." Additionally, it's used as a way to mask technical deficiencies with screenshots. Can't frame a shot to save your life? No problem, just put in the latest sexy ENB and everyone will love it*. It doesn't matter how awful your setting and background is if depth of field makes it super blurry! It can make certain textures or colors behave differently, which can also cover up poor skill. You can even add a pretentious cinematic letterbox effect that makes your screenshot instantly shit yet also "moar epic". *But make sure your character is half-naked and either looks 12 and made of plastic or has skin textures so detailed you can count the pores from across the room. For bonus points, include a godawful body that gets worse every time you "improve" it in Bodyslide.

RomeoZero Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I do not agree in some terms with you Jax, dick-measuring system, maybe ,some proud they have cool ENB configs on enbdev. For others, it's a small opportunity to learn some shading, scripting, modding a plugin tool in visual environmental resources of the engine. I started to learn some game engines bcs of it.Very interesting that you , as a designer, can make better Visuals, than original devs of the game. There is also some technical issues with ENB on Vcard architectures,so not everyone can benefit from using the mod of the author.I say ENB or sweetFX is a very cool entertainment tool for making your game look the way *you prefer*. Just a big shame, there is no perfect tutorial for the common users.
Guest endgameaddiction Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I found that DOF has got to be the most dumbest and useless feature of them all.. I don't see any point in it. If I want DOF I could just wear some non prescribed glasses and cut a hole in the middle of each lens and focus on my character. Thank goodness i can disable this feature.

Gameplayer Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 I've been wondering about using it... I just upgraded the video card for reasons. Anyway I used to think it was simply that my previous card couldn't handle the ENB but now I just realize that the presets are just overwhelming and not in a good way. DoF is just too strong, ambient occlusion seems nice but costs too much performance, colors are way too saturated, and the lighting is really aweful I just cant see anything or it doesn't seem playable even when the FPS is consistent due to visibility reasons. I just cant seem to justify the loss in performance when I know that I can just use Imaginator, Dynavision, force ambient occlusion, and up the ugrids (or tweak actor, grass, tree draw distances). I just feel a bit stumped about it, doesn't seem to be something that is going to easily make use of the card I bought without a ton of tweaking when I have already figured out how to get similar effects at less cost. Also I don't feel realism is properly used when describing ENB effects seems to me its more like impressionism or some other vague Art History topic that I have since forgotten but realism hell no, nothing realistic about ENB, at least not inside my realm of education.
vram1974 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 2 things: 1. ENB doesn't require a good computer. 2. ENB is a MANDATORY download for Skyrim stability if used without the graphics enabled. Don't know what it stands for, don't care, it's essential for gaming.
Mud Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Wow. Everyone's all heated up about ENB and I'm just sitting here using it to get better color in the game.
Sailing Rebel Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Look here for ENBSeries general information: http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:ENB And here for ENBoost which uses the ENBSeries binaries and is required for game stability: http://wiki.step-project.com/ENBoost Not to be confused with ENB Presets that you might download from Nexus that use the same binaries to alter graphical fidelity.

I had SLI'ed Nvidia 250s (the PNY Xcellerate versions) and ENB without presets constantly crashed my game. 2 See #1, lol Now I've got a Nvidia 730 and I get decent stability from just MO and SSME.
spoonsinger Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 ENB - Stands from 'Easy Now Boris'. Which isn't exactly helpful, (probably a Yorkshire term), but basically it's a post processor on the output, (i.e. what originally was meant to be, re-diddled with someone elses vision), to your game. So..... Original.... And with an ENB.... (That's the effect. But.. there are additional subtle differences to the output under different lighting conditions which give a more natural effect - or not - depending on which ENB preset you use)

Admittedly, running an ENB has been a lot more fun since I bought a R9 270x 2GB card but I was actually able to run RealVision on my previous AMD Radeon HD 8670D with 768 MB of vram. Believe it or not. The only sad thing is I have to run my R9 in 1360x768 VGA because I couldn't figure out how to render the 1080p native on my 32" Ario HDTV through the HDMI slot. It looks like GARBAGE through HDMI so I guess it's a problem with me not using a proper computer monitor.
Shadowhawk827 Posted June 30, 2015 Posted June 30, 2015 Well, marv4791... Either ENB likes Radeon better than Nvidia or I did something wrong in configuring things, lol. I could have sworn I read the instructions correctly (over and over no less). As far as your TV though... The only real difference nowadays between a TV and monitor is the added TV tuner circuits. You've probably already tried this, but I'd suggest checking if there are some tweaked drivers or extra software to let the card display better on the TV. Most folks don't know it, but TVs all run on Linux, so you might also try poking around Google and seeing if you can find a Linux download (some sort of software / firmware update) that corrects the issue also.
Veladarius Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 How an ENB looks depends a lot on what lighting mods you have, any differences from whomever made it can make it look different. Most DOF presets end up making it look more like tiltshift instead. I had a DOF setup that only slightly blurred the LOD slightly, not sure what happened to it though (was a manually set file). As for performance, check the settings of the ENB as you can turn off various effects to increase framerate, that and most every one I have used had AA set to x16.
