Slammer64 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 The glibc bug as you put it has already been patched, since most modern Linux software doesn't use those functions that were being called. And as for being buggy, EviasDutch, you're using Win 8.1, need I say any more? Really, I've been using Linux since about '97 and it's more secure and stable than Windows or Mac. All my servers run custom compiled Gentoo Linux, I have uptimes in the 100's of days, 1 server has an uptime of 746 days, I'd like to see a Windows server match that!

All my servers run custom compiled Gentoo Linux, I have uptimes in the 100's of days, 1 server has an uptime of 746 days, I'd like to see a Windows server match that!  It can.. that is if it is sitting "UP' on a shelf or something..  To answer the comment that Windows More secure? http://www.exploit-db.com/platform/?p=windows http://hakin9.org/how-to-exploit-windows-8-with-metasploit/ http://www.technobuffalo.com/2013/08/22/nsa-windows-8-exploit/ Look on the web for exploits for windows. then do a search for linux. You will find it harder to find those. (at least current exploits as they are fixed extremely fast) Windows has had exploits that have been int he system since 95, 20 years.   If so why do most if not all major corporations use Linux, or BSD for their servers and security? Most exploits on these systems are due to errors on their part not the OS. Target and other stores getting hacked is because they were stupid and allow someone in their store to place equipment to steal the info.  Why do these companies use Linux/BSD based OS and code is they can see what has been installed code wise and see if there is any voodoo being done to try to get their data. This isn't perfect but better than having a back door to get your info..  Us users can be safer because we can download patches that have been looked at many times by dozens of coders and programers and yes even white hat hackers.  Now I will agree the most current version of Microsoft's OS is the secure for those that don't understand their own security or what to do. That and Major games aren't really developed for Linux etc.  Â
Slammer64 Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 That may be changing ritualclarity, with Steam's introduction to Linux, we can but hope...
Car Fax Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 What happened to windows 9? Â Was windows RT considered windows 9, or are we just going to skip that?
Symon Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Linux is bugged and very unsafe and its terible in patching that. Â (Falls about laughing.) (Checks Nagios display with well over 200 Linux servers monitored. Randomly selects a DNS server, checks uptime.) Â Over 18 months. Last reboot was a kernel upgrade. I'm quite happy to be part of a team of two that build, maintains and runs those. I wouldn't want to look after a similar sized Windows estate. I patched two of our servers on Friday: Â Yum update Press Y All done in 30 seconds. Â Last time I patched a windows workstation, it took 10 minutes, a long reboot and then I had to manually hack at the registry.
RitualClarity Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 What happened to windows 9? Â Was windows RT considered windows 9, or are we just going to skip that? They are skipping that number something about windows 95, 98. Something about the software mistaking windows 9 as win 95 etc.

They are skipping that number something about windows 95, 98. Something about the software mistaking windows 9 as win 95 etc. Â Â Huh...that sounds like the kind of thing that could be solved easily. Then again, I only know enough about Windows to keep it from blocking third party programs. Â Seriously, between AVAST and windows, it's a wonder I'm able to install anything. I've had to create batch files just to unblock multiple files at once! Â Ah well. At least it ain't Windows Vista...
Mister X Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Yea, Someone on reddit(?), who said for himself to work for Microsoft, gave the answer that in former times all the 3rd party programs checked the version of Windows by a simple string search, and the string was "Windows 9", so it gave true for Win95 and 98. Â But with that in mind, you can't give the new Win the number 9, because it would trigger a true in older Software for Win95/98 versions
Slammer64 Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 That and in the Asian market, 9 is considered a unlucky number. Mister-X.
joemonco Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 The glibc bug as you put it has already been patched  No it hasn't.
mewwwkittytt Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 If only I could play my games on Linux, I would not need Windows at all. Â But I sure would miss Visual Studio....
RitualClarity Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Emulation should work... correct? Virtual box, Windows whatever, Visual Studio?
mewwwkittytt Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 Emulation should work... correct? Virtual box, Windows whatever, Visual Studio? Â Ehh I would be building executables for Windows running VS in a virtual machine on Linux. Â Visual Studio is that awesome IDE made by Microsoft with good intellisense, refactoring, etc.
Slammer64 Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 @ joemonco, yes it has: https://sysadmincasts.com/episodes/44-patching-the-ghost-glibc-gethostbyname-cve-2015-0235-bug
jadusstone Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Ive been reading articles about windows 10 on lifehacker, and so far it looks like the interface is very touch screen friendly, Nice to see the start menu is back. some of the articles are here -> http://lifehacker.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-windows-10-1642066771 Â
RitualClarity Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Well since I had to do a reformat I figured what the hell, so I DL'd Windows 10 Pro Tech. Preview eval. copy Build 9926. so far it has worked flawlessly, no glitches, hangs, freezes ctd's and plays well with Skyrim(Mod Orginizer), FO3, FONV, Dying Light, Outlast. all drivers installed without a hitch.  (Cortana is funny as hell depending on the questions you ask). The interface takes some getting used to but all in all I'm liking it. Hope I didn't just jinx myself LOL. Having downloaded and had problems with prior RC's this Eval. is a surprise no BSOD's nada not even a hickup. and I can revert to Win 7 at any time.  Good review of windows ten for us.. Thumbs up. Â
RitualClarity Posted April 5, 2015 Posted April 5, 2015 Did you try Print Screen key and then paste in Paint? You should be able to get a few captures that way. A pain yes but hopefully still works. Never failed regardless of the computer I used all the way back to 95.. Not sure about before.. lol.
...0... Posted April 8, 2015 Author Posted April 8, 2015 I seriously doub i upgrade to windows 10 anytime soon need to know a lot more, info from all normal users over time and the problems windows 10 will give or not.  Still unsure how deep cloud is integrated into windows 10 plus windows live and register with MS account if not you get a gimped windows that dont work properly if you dont want cloud or an account with MS?  Fuck cloud, cortana, touch, windows live, xbox and any social media all that crap not interested.  Also if firefox or many other programs still dont work properly i wont up grade also fuck MS browser or google ext.  Dont want anything monitoring what im doing.  No faith in MS and windows 10, have know a lot more before i even think of upgrading.  To many fails and privacy unsecure plus spying MS do.  Everything remotely related to cloud or windows live can suck my balls  It's a shame because i want DX12 but my privacy and how i use my PC and windows are more importent then what MS wants i dont give shit about what they want, i decide how, not MS.  Will see what future reveals about windows 10  No windows 10 for me for while need to know a lot more.
FallenWarrior Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Windows 10 is going to be followed by "Redstone" under 2016 https://translate.google.se/translate?sl=sv&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=sv&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sweclockers.com%2Fnyhet%2F20309-windows-10-foljs-av-redstone-under-2016&edit-text=&act=url
Guest Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Ok first I dont even know if its worth to go to 10, after the 8th windows I am terrified, I have a surface and everytime I use 8 or its many restrictions and bugs just makes me want to smash it against a wall. Â Its like MS just looks at Apple's model of captive pricing (and only because of idiots that pander to it). Can anyone say for sure at some point after the W10 update I wont be forced to pay 500$ for an office when my old copy of 2003 works just fine? On the tablet I noticed there were so many restrictions where I had to get everything from their stupid store and windows 8 on the PC had a similar store thing (I refused to buy any computer with windows 8 on it). Â When I operate windows 7 it feels like its an extention of my will, it does what I need it to do but windows 8 feels like a constant battle to make it do what I want. Â Â
nIn nIn nIn Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 So, what that means is - don't opt in for the "free" upgrade. I was planning on waiting and understanding through others experiences anyway. Â I suppose those that purchase a retail copy will be able to disable "features" ??? Â I can wait until more information comes to hand.
...0... Posted July 27, 2015 Author Posted July 27, 2015 At moment there is no way around it, WU is forced up to pro version, no matter what you try it keep reinstalling drivers you can delay it for short while but eventually you must upgrade. This become huge problem if driver is faulty then we fucked. For security updates i would have no problem but drivers no way i accept that.  I´ll wait and see when it go live see what happen but this ain´t looking good as of now seems worse windows version ever.  Huge datemining(spying to extreme) and forced windows update includes drivers.  I'll install win10 on my laptop so i can experience what it all will do when it go live.  My main rig stay win8.1 i won't give up my key for now after all have year to deside if i go win10 or not.  It's pitty with my Fury X and DX12 i want this but my privacy and WU forced no way i accept this from M$.
Angrybird Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 If Windows 10 doesn't have classic theme I'm not upgrading.
kikoo59 Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I don't know if I will upgrade it... I believe we have 1 year to do it. Will wait some test to chose.
