ToJKa Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 From how they worded that post thanking everybody and stuff it really seems like its finished and it will be out by tomorrow Gstaff said in the official forums that "if it won't be out tomorrow, it propably won't until next week", so it might.
prideslayer Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Managers set deadlines, not marketing people. Marketing people ask management to give them deadlines, and dev managers and team leads say they can meet them or they can't. I'm a developer. One thing I've learned in my many years in the field is that we are notoriously bad at estimating LoE (level of effort) for deadlines, and at estimating timeframes. Tools out there exist for tracking developer progress and even creating realistic estimates out of developer provided estimates by watching the accuracy of past estimates, but they aren't perfect, few shops use them, and developers hate them because managers abuse them. tl;dr: Marketing department is blameless, and did an amazing job in hyping the game and generating sales.
Guest Donkey Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 looks like modders get payed too for uploading directly to steam ?? Did i read it right ?? too bad the stuff i can make will be banned pretty quick.. Or i will just create house mods and companions system and still getting payed.
DocClox Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 I'm a developer too, and I've seen more than one project run into problems because some salesman promised the earth by yesterday, neither knowing or caring if it was possible. But I guess my problem is with whoever keeps on with the transparent PR crap. Call 'em management rather than marketing - I don't think the distinction is particularly clear cut when we drift into PR, but I'll happily use your definitions.

[/quote'] Why do you have a problem with them, whoever is responsible? It's not like marketing or management guys can STFU, roll up their sleeves, and help the dev teams out (I shudder to think...) If you are in the field, you know both types are busy bodies. They need something to do. Management is certainly interested in doing whatever they can to keep hype in the game up, keep bloggers and websites talking about it and generating "sales leads", etc. Seriously. STFU is entirely against their job description. I'm happier to see them showcasing features that are coming than promising more pie in the sky delivery dates, I'll say that much. Some of the features look pretty sweet.
Surenas Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Another likely story. I'll believe it when I see it, and not before. After 10 years TES these fidgeting actions are an unpleasant surprise.
tomfoolery Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 So... who's going to make that old-timy shouts mod? Whoever does I will love forever. You can also read more about it over on Bethblog http://www.bethblog.com/2012/02/01/first-look-creation-kit-and-skyrim-workshop/ One thing of note: "We even added a few features to help out — for instance, custom INI files can now be packaged into mods so you don’t need to backup your INI files anymore."

If I'm honest with myself, my personal irritation is mainly directed at Todd Howard for reasons already outlined. I know the man has his fans, and I'll be the first to admit that I don't really know the him very well. But I don't much like being patronied, and I found him patronizing with the pre-release spin for Skyrim. As for marketing/PR/management/whatever ... the fact that so many people perceive them as liars tells me they're not doing everything right. Me, I'm just trying to say "don't blame the developers".
prideslayer Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Question: Who's "old" enough to remember Daikatana? Things can ALWAYS be worse. Broken promises are my only gripe. They said the CK would be available on release day, so I preordered. Only thing it hurt was my pocketbook, as I could have put off buying and maybe got in on some kind of steam sale.

As for marketing/PR/management/whatever ... the fact that so many people perceive them as liars tells me they're not doing everything right. Me, I'm just trying to say "don't blame the developers". I'm not a TES (or Beth) fanboy, in that I don't even know who Todd Howard is. Looking at it from the outside, everyone can share in the blame a bit. It rests mainly with management and the dev team in my experience. You know how projects like this go. Marketing pushes for a solid date so they can make commitments. Management "relays" that push on to the dev team(s). The dev managers and team leads either push back because they can't make the date, or they don't. If the dev team pushes back hard enough against a date, it will get changed. Some date has to be given in most cases, most managers won't accept valve time from their dev teams. That said, it looks like Beth just has the same problems as almost every other dev shop: they cannot provide accurate estimates. Pre-release spin and game changes, entirely different thing. All the publishers want more 'casual' sales, so they dumb down the game, hoping to give it broader appeal. They're in it to make money after all, and it's silly to cater to the 1% of hardcore RPGers when they can pull from a much broader base by simplifying. We (RPG fans) don't have to like it from a personal perspective, but it makes business sense. Can't fault them for that.
DorkDiva Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 hahahaha....nexus just got owned and so did their mod manager! I cant wait to see the slow heat death of Nexus. Just looking at that video proves it will be far superior and most likely will be used the most. Thanks for posting this.
cyanure Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 After seeing the video about it,I am pondering if it is not a try,by Bestheda and through Steam,to control the game content. How willthe mod been installed? the same way than usual? or with the need of passing through Steam with a "filter" of content?also does that mean that Bestheda will get money"on the back" of the Modders?
prideslayer Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 You're pondering something they explicitly denied. They have added a way to automatically send mods to the workshop. They cannot prevent you (and have said they are not attempting to) from going into your data dir, packaging the mod yourself, and sending it off to other people to copy into their data directories.
Chase Roxand Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 Only thing it hurt was my pocketbook' date=' as I could have put off buying and maybe got in on some kind of steam sale. Guest Donkey Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 When did they say ?? how about from the start.. There entire marketing was based on it. Full release with ck. 11-11-11

Ok not exactly on launch day, but: http://www.vg247.com/2011/07/07/creation-kit-release-to-come-at-least-very-close-to-skyrim-launch-says-howard/ We’re hoping it will be available as a download on launch day. I don’t know if I can promise day-one, but it will be very close And now I know who Todd Howard is.
GSBmodders Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 the whole bit of steam and game mods is market research, beth knows that modding communities are popular but they do not know if modding communities could produce income if exposed to a greater audience so this is a test to see exactly how many more pc users will use mods if they are shoved in the faces of a near captive audience if Bethesda likes the results and Microsoft acknowledges the profit potential it could pave the way for paid modding which exists for 2nd life. casual modders of course will mostly get screwed as pro's from the other communities such as 2nd life, imvu and poser/daz studio move in and flood the market Bethesda, steam and microsoft however will make millions more as they each would get a cut of the sales. Its not a future that i am looking forward to so i hope and pray that most people will simply ignore the mods that steam offers
2pac4eva7 Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 hahahaha....nexus just got owned and so did their mod manager! I cant wait to see the slow heat death of Nexus. so much this. my only worry is that they will have lots of adult content restrictions :\
prideslayer Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 I don't think worrying over modders getting paid is that big of a deal. I'd gladly pay for better bodies and other mods if there were 'pros' working on them, personally. Would I pay for sexout? Probably not. I think your concern will help kill nexus somewhat, because large things like project nevada and high quality bodies could easily become pay-for mods, but it won't kill places like this (LL). May be difficult to find free ones on steam, but it's already hard to find shit in steam -- that's my one gripe with the system so far.

Unless they have a "are you 18+" acceptance button to view them.
