Whatever name you cut it, ransomware does to your data is to hold it hostage, asking you to feed the motherfuckers some cryptocurrency and then they promise to give it back to you. Otherwise you are completely fucked.

No. There are ways around it.

Which is why it's a matter of common sense and needing to know what's inside.

Unfortunately, not everyone is well-versed in information security or in dealing with viruses.

BTW, all this talk about NSA being the greatest threat to democracy and free speech and the calls to abolish it makes Putin and Jinping very, very happy as they toy the useful fools to shill for them. And they're on my doorstep.

LOL!  The FBI virus has nothing to do with the FBI.  It's ransomware that "locks" your files and makes you pay the hacker to unlock your files.

Someone responded on one of the HDT PE related mod page at Nexus that he/she got it from here.

allow me to elaborate. The "FBI virus" infects your computer and locks you out of your files. You then receive an Email from someone claiming to be from the FBI saying that the FBI has confiscated access to your files and you need to pay to get it back. This is a ridiculous statement as the FBI doesn't confiscate access to files. If they wanted your files, they would just take them and not give them back. I'm not necessarily concerned with direct DLs from LL, but I would be wary of any suspicious files on 3rd party upload sites. I'm not sure if antivirus software picks up the FBI virus, but you should always scan your computer regularly.

Just Restart your computer back to factory Condition.....GG WP hackers lol

It's not very funny when those fuckers encrypt everything in the Documents folder with a heavy form of scrambling that would take several centuries to break.

Dunno about the FBI or NSA, but while half myth/half truth, the major countries have had the capability to do analysis on most of the worlds traffic for quite some while now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECHELON

I'm not even that much of a tin-foil hat person, but I think it's safe to assume that everything that goes out on the internet from your computer that isn't encrypted can be found and read by some form of government type organisation.

Of course luckily we had SSL to give us all a cheap, easily available and secure way of encrypting our traffic.  Oh snap.. ...  (For those that didn't know, an exploit was found for SSL not that long ago that had the entire IT world up-side-down. It was and still is probably the most impactfull security flaw this decade, if not longer.  It was dubbed heartbleed, just google that if you want to know more.)

But then again, and here is where my tin-foil hat comes off. Having the capability to essentially know what mods I've installed for skyrim is one thing, actually caring enough to devote resources to find out is something else entirely.

I got zapped by that but I got if from....wait for it...NEXUS when I was browsing without AdBlock enabled.  I got a pop up about not being able to view the page wihout updating JavaScript and before I could close the window it had me.  It wasn't a big deal to get rid of (restart in safe mode, uninstall Java, registry scrub and virus clean up) but it DID scare the shit out of me until I realized the FBI wouldn't demand a money transfer on a green card.

In all the time I've spent on LL and VGU for that matter, I've never had any virus issues.

Tis why I use firefox with plugins like adblocker and noscript, I only unblock trusted sites and even then i am careful. Haven't had a virus in many years now, despite some of the questionable web sites I surf. :)

Try RequestPolicy. I ditched the adblocker for it, and will probably ditch noscript as well. It does basically what we all want -- lets scripts run that originate on the page itself, but requires you to authorize any of them that come from a different place. It's a bit more work than just noscript, but more precise as well.

Protection Is Key
I could write an antivirus that's guaranteed to score a perfect six for usability. It wouldn't report any valid files as malicious, because it wouldn't flag any files at all. Since it does nothing, it wouldn't put any drag on the system, so there's another perfect six, for performance. Of course, its protection score would be a big fat zero.

Never used windows for web browsing, 10 years ago apple, then changed onto ubuntu, it's a far safer way to surf.

If anyone wants to give it a go try www.ubuntu.com

It gives alot of piece of mind, never having to worry about crap installing onto the registry and viruses sneaking into your system, you can even install it on a dual boot.

I just read a comment on another Skyrim modding site about LL having "the FBI virus". Is this, in fact, true, or just someone trolling? I've never heard of an "FBI virus".

The FBI virus actually exists. I have had to fix multiple computers that have been afflicted with it. People were saying that it was actually made by the FBI and implanted on sites that have things that the FBI deems illegal. Things bestiality, pedophilia, treason, ect. This however is not entirely true, a while it can be put on any website the FBI would only put it on websites that deal with reality, otherwise people would not be able to participate in the furry movement either. And while furries may exist in reality, there are far more programs (like IMVU) that have furry communities. The virus has also been in control of groups that put it on random website; usually banks, businesses, and other place that would have peoples personal identification, either as way to deter hackers or far more likely the groups are made of people who are trying to gain access to that information. I worked on a woman's computer once that she had the virus on and all she had done was gone to her companies website to see when her paycheck would be in. It simply locks-up your computer and tells you to pay a certain amount to such-and-such to get it unlocked.

Got hit with this awhile ago myself.  Scared the shit out of me at first (perplexed to I was just checking out a Russian news site) then I did my homework.  NOTE to the Wise:  The Federal Bureau of Investigation will NEVER lock your computer or attempt to ransom your files.  If you really are guilty of digital theft, hacking or pedophilia your IP gets locked by your provider and an agent will be there to see you within 2 or 3 standard hours, sometimes shorter depending on the offense.  They DO NOT hold your computer ransom and ask for payment to unlock it.  This IS a scam but thankfully the scrubs can be easily dealt with.

Removing said malware is easy.  Also be aware of 3rd party sites.  On occasion the scam will actually give you a timer on how much time you have to stop the lock.  If this is the case simply open up Task Manager and End Process whatever browser you are using.  I still recommend cleaning your PC with a good virus scan and the Safe Mode instructions on the link above.

Never heard about it until then. Thanks for the explanation !

In USA it is FBI virus in EUROPE it is POLICE virus.

The virus locks your machine saying you have illegally downloaded music, movies whatever.  They want a ransom, they call it a fine, to restore your machine to you and give you a website where you can pay up.  The problem with the FBI virus is that even if you are foolish enough to pay the ransom, it still does not remove the virus from your machine.  I had that damn thing twice and had to take it to the shop to get it removed.  The first time it came off easily.  The second time not so much.  They eventually, after over a week of trying, backed up my HDD and then formatted it a couple of times.  That was how I lost some of my mods.  Hope this helps clear up some of y"all's questions.

BTW, considering the huge payoff from this scam, the ransom money could be used to fund someone's war machine (you know who, no offense).

Say, take over a certain Eastern European country.

FBI are hackers. And so are all the people that work for them.

We should shout when we see them hold right there criminal scum. Pay me a fine or serve your sentence. I will confiscate all your stolen goods. And you will be on your way.  :P

In brief, the FBI, Interpol, Police virus has nothing to do with the actual organizations. It's a virus that encrypts your PC, locking it up until a payment is made.

Long story:

Basically you get a very official looking pop-up of your nation's police department, stating that your PC has been hijacked by foreign hackers and that you need to pay a one-time sum for the paperwork involved to clear you of all charges. It usually asks you to pay through a moneypak or with bitcoins. Often the virus claims that the user's PC has been used for spreading underaged pornography or drugs trafficking and that unless the user pays up within three days, they will be arrested on grounds of ignoring the warning and thus so aiding the hackers with their particular felony. Alternately, it may threaten to delete all data in 72 hours with the best interest of the user in mind, to keep them clear of any charges, unless the user pays to have their data spared.

The FBI virus is unique in that it actually places a sort of encryption key on the user's PC, which when the proper transaction is detected releases the passkey to unlock the PC. The passkey not only works, but it leaves the PC clean and unharmed. This causes many computer newbies to believe that they really did get a warning from the authorities and that as a law abiding citizen, they are now in the clear again. In a way, it's ingenious. It's not surprising then how many people really do pay the fine, either because they are worried that the warning is real and do not want to risk being arrested, or because they just want the virus to go away.

There are so many versions of this virus

Police/FBI etc

Fun fact: My dad got the Dutch version of it on my moms laptop the version that doesn't encrypt your files luckily

I've read enough from that site alone that I'm convinced that the operators and affiliates behind the so-called "FBI virus" are members of a growing organized kleptocracy, in essence, the ideal mobster state.

So whatever victims are paying, it eventually becomes part of Uncle Vlad's war chest.

Yes... Give me your money!  MWAHAHAHAHA

To retake Ukraine.
