I think we are proving wrong all those people who say "sarcasm does not work in writing." I said, "I will give you the benefit of doubt and assume you're being sarcastic," precisely because you can't always assume that someone IS being sarcastic. I have read enough posts by all sort of users to know that there are some seriously fucked up, screwed up, selfish, apathetic and ignorant people out there on the internet. There are people who would say something that MOST people would assume to be a joke or sarcasm but because of who they are and their personality they may actually be quite serious. Saying you're being sarcastic doesn't just make the statement no longer sarcasm. Sure, it's a bit heavy handed to label something as sarcastic or say you're being sarcastic but it doesn't change the fact that it is still sarcasm. If I say, "I'm going to tell you a joke about the political state of affairs," and then I tell you the joke it doesn't mean that the joke is no longer a joke because I said it was or because I told you ahead of time or even after the fact. It is, in fact, still a joke just as sarcasm is still sarcasm.

Otherwise, I see it at the top of the active threads and am forced to click on it." If you don't like what a particular poster is posting, there's an "ignore user" function. I don't like wholesale ignorance of the rules of this forum, rules we all agree to when we register. No sarcasm, no nothing. This is a political topic being discussed on a forum that explicitly forbids political discussion, therefore it should be locked. I have many opinions on this matter, and many, dare I say most of y'all would agree with me. However, I refrain from discussing them in places where it is against the rules to do so.

What makes a sarcastic statement sarcastic is its double meaning. Tag on "This is sarcasm" and you remove the double meaning. If someone asks you "Does this hat look good on me?"and you say "Sure, uh, it looks awesome. By the way, I was being sarcastic," that's the same as saying "No, it doesn't." And thus we have reached "agree to disagree."
Fuzzy_Fox Posted September 11, 2025 Posted September 11, 2025 I live in the UK and have had to start to use a VPN to get around the draconian laws the government has now placed on the internet. It isn't just affecting the UK it is affecting the whole world. As companies in other countries are facing fines from the UK of 10% of their gross earning each year if they fail to fall into line with UK law. Even if a web site gets one UK visitor they are subject to this fine. 4chan are taking the UK government to court over this as it is in breach of their Freedom of Speech laws, and I hope it bankrupts the country. Currently I despise the government here and what it is doing to its people and our freedoms. So far this year over 1000 people here in the UK have been arrested and incarcerated into prison for up to 3 years for social media posts. Don't believe the main stream media, don't trust your politicians, and do your own research. "They can't stop the Signal Mal." 1

The mainstream media in the U.S. reported on that Irish comedian who was arrested in England for something he posted on twitter. I don't know for a fact, but he was presumably in Ireland (or someplace else not England) when he posted it, so being arrested for it once he got to England is pretty draconian. 2
