Nexusmods Changing Policies on Adult Content

Recommended Posts

Don't know if anyone else has read the announcement on Nexus yet, but they are revamping their adult content rules in the near future in order to comply with UK and EU legal requirements.  In their own words, "Adult content is a core part of what makes Nexus Mods what it is; we don’t consider removing it a viable option.", but in order to continue to host and provide adult content they will have to comply with the age verification and content management rules established by the Online Safety Act and Digital Services Act.  Full notice here: https://www.nexusmods.com/news/15319.

I've already seen how much modding has gone underground into discord chatrooms and similar places. I can only see that continuing.

For Everyone Else:

  • You will not be subject to age verification. The current approach to verifying you are above 18 years of age will remain the same unless we are legally required to change this to operate in your country.

For UK and EU-based users:

  • In the future, we will be introducing age verification for the majority of adult content hosted on the site.

Time for a VPN.

lol well I didn't expect to see a decline in that site so quickly. But here we are.

Loverslab about to get a big influx of new users real soon.

As far as the site has been running the last few days; I think we are already seeing that start to happen.

Well when you makes mods that basically is illegal like rape and loli, snuf and so on.  I can see why criminals move underground.   Im glad nexus got the brains to at least follow common laws even when it comes to adult content.

Nobody in the world wants to provide some kind of ID to access porn - I don't know why governments keep thinking people would actually do that.

Also, for some reason they think the EU requires them to institute that kind of age verification - meanwhile any EU citizen can go to any of the big porn sites and see whatever they like without jumping through any hoops.

Nexus is dead. Someone needs to start an alternative. Nexus has a really shitty Layout, but compared to LoversLab is amazing. The Download Section here is really hard and its really not made to browse for Mods.

Perhaps that is the point. If people aren't prepared to provide ID then the porn site loses customers - revenue falls - some companies go bump - porn industry shrinks - the world's a better place.

That started when Nexusmods implemented their "All  your mod are belong to us" policy.

And, in response to many of the other posts, several pieces of the sky just fell on me. Those saying things along the lines of "Nexus is dead" will continue using Nexusmods just as much as they ever did. And a year from now barely anyone will remember this tempest in a teacup.

Did I miss something in the Nexusmods' post that was linked? Where does it say that complying with UK/EU regs will require sharing personal info? What I see is "In the future, we will be introducing age verification for the majority of adult content hosted on the site. The specifics of this are being carefully considered."

If this is confirmed, this would be one reason why you need to be careful who you vote for.  But it seems that Nexus is still sorting out the details.

Clarification.

My reading of it is that they want to have your age verified by a third party trusted system, so that they don't need to hold any extra data at Nexus, and they have someone else to blame if the law comes knocking.

Where do you see that? Is it one of the comments? Is it a UK/EU thing already for adult sites?

Yeah. You could end up voting for some one who wants to protect children.

What was said in the Nexus piece:

Does Age Verification Affect You?

For UK and EU-based users:

  • In the future, we will be introducing age verification for the majority of adult content hosted on the site. The specifics of this are being carefully considered as we want to get this right so that the option to view adult content remains available to adults, whilst fulfilling our legal obligation to ensure children are safe on our website.

For Everyone Else:

  • You will not be subject to age verification. The current approach to verifying you are above 18 years of age will remain the same unless we are legally required to change this to operate in your country.

From The DarkOne's post (second sticky post below the article)

For the people who think this is the fault of the new owners of Nexus Mods, please either read the news post above properly or read up on the laws around child safety online that are coming to every major western country either this month, or in the coming year (including most states in the US).

Online Safety Act

The child safety regime will be fully in effect by Summer 2025.

Duties for categorised services – some platforms will have to comply with additional requirements to enhance transparency and accountability. The Act created categories of service and thresholds for each category (Category 1, 2A and 2B) were laid via secondary legislation on 16 December 2024.

Once the regulations to set the thresholds have been laid and approved by Parliament, Ofcom will publish a register setting out which services fall into which categories and will publish further codes of practice for consultation. Ofcom expects to publish the register of categorised services in Summer 2025 and consult on the codes of practice and, where relevant, guidance for the additional duties on categorised services by early 2026.

I guess we'll all get VPNs and use a server located in Macau or something.

Here's something many people don't understand. Change is a part of the world. Sometimes it's for the better, sometimes for the worse. There are those who can accept it and those who cannot. Nexus, just like anything in the world, is changing. It has in the past, and will continue to do so until it dies. There are those who don't mind it, and those who do. Those who are OK with the change will stay, and those who don't like it will leave. However, new people will come in and replace those who left. Or, perhaps, the new users will leave because they don't like it. Nothing is certain. If Nexus is to fall because of these changes, then something else will take its place. A new site will rise and carry the torch, or maybe one that already exists will, like this one. When the age of the dinosaurs came to an end, mammals took their place. When Nexus dies, something else will become the number 1 modding site.

My advice? Don't lose sleep over this. If Nexus collapses over age verification, then so be it. People did nothing but whine about them anyway. Never understood why myself, but that's just my point of view.

Nexusmods finally got tired of people wigging out and they locked the comments for the announcement the OP linked. I'm giddy as a non-gendered school age human that I was IBL.

To an extent, I get it. But also, people shouldn't just outright assume everything is safe for children or have them in mind. I've already had major issues with Nexus over the past few years with how bad its gotten, and even if this doesn't effect me (Yet) it still annoys the hell out of me to see, since it just makes finding mods even more of a hassle and pain in the ass as it is with it all being on Discord.

I shouldn't have to join a multitude of servers just to get a few mods.
