BruceWayne Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Has anyone tried this one yet? The Rockwell Pursuit People seem to like it and it's actually leading FOTM on the Nexus, but the mod author has a bad track record, regarding dirty and gamebreaking mods, as well as being hostile towards people pointing that out to him.
myuhinny Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Haven't tried it but this is from first page of comments. So we're stable now, but a conflict has been uncovered with 'FOOK New Vegas DLC's.esm' - this causes Goldwater's Voice to be silent. We are working on fixing this in the next patch. 2 files are needed to run it correctly the main one and Rockwell Pursuit Latest Update -Required-.
BruceWayne Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 Thanks, but I am more interested in the things he doesn't mention on that page. Since the Nexus doesn't allow negative comments on mods, I was hoping that someone tried it and can tell, if it breaks the whole game, like his last mod did. It sounds really cool and I'd give it a shot, if he got his act together this time around.
astymma Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Well, I've downloaded it just to see if the author had improved his modding techniques... the answer would be no. He has, however... at least this time, avoided the fatal errors of his previous mod. This one can actually be cleaned by an experienced user and be expected to function correctly but it's still a very dirty mod.
DoctaSax Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Aw man, how come a dirty mod gets voted FOTM? What's with these people?
BruceWayne Posted April 15, 2013 Author Posted April 15, 2013 That's what I feared. Well, his mod page looks really shiny and I was just about to download it, when I saw the remark to uninstall his previous mod, prior to this one. Looking at that one reminded me of the discussion that you guys had here some time ago. I'll leave it be then. I can live with bugs or the occasional dirty edit, but I guess I'm too spoiled to do the work he should have done in the first place... File of the month...
Blunderbuss Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I'm sorry, After seeing this I had to create an account and comment.... I agree completely with the Rockwell Descent being an absolute crap fest in terms of construction and dirty edits, as well as being a sub-par story all together - But what's wrong with the Pursuit exactly? I always open mods up in the geck and FNVedit before I take the chance on my game, and with the Rockwell Pursuit? I'd have to say It's darn clean as hell. He's used the proper nomenclatures this time around (instead of 00000aiuhifaNPC), he's not edited or ruined any interiors like the last, and it has dirty edits and problems that you can count on one hand. Three fingers at most. And this is why it's on it's way up to FOTM instead of the Descent. Have any of you guys actually opened this mod up and looked at it? Because from what you guys say, we must be talking about a different mod From my point of view, having attempted to make 1 mod in my life, I respect those who put their own time in to make a free adventure for us to play. (Minus the Descent, I'm sorry that was Sh*t) I'd give it a whirl. 8 hours worth of play that had me loving New Vegas again, I still have it installed while i'm back chillin in the Mojave, not a problem since.
BruceWayne Posted April 24, 2013 Author Posted April 24, 2013 Welcome to LL! Well, if he is known for releasing "Sh*t" (your words, not mine) people become wary. As that mod is quite big and with the discussion still in mind, I think it's only fair to ask if someone actually tried it, before I potentially ruin my game. I'd ask this on the Nexus, but that would put my account at risk, as criticism or even a hint of sarcasm isn't well handled over there (at least from non-contributors). And if one of the most experienced users here says that he has downloaded it and it is "very dirty", I'll take him by his word and have very little desire to find out for myself, regardless if the mod is otherwise of good quality.
zippy57 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 (edited) Have any of you guys actually opened this mod up and looked at it? Blunderbuss Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Oh well.. I guess It's not as clean as I thought. What software did you use to find those? FNVEdit only points out 5 errors Is the 'Check for Errors' not enough? I don't know... I guess I just felt the need to defend the guy. He spent so long making the thing on his free time for us, and here y'all are bashing him. And um.. enjoying it. Do you guys do this for every mod? Or is this guy the only one who makes these kinds of mistakes? Hopefully It still makes FOTM, I think he deserves it. For I haven't come in contact with 1 problem while playing through this thing. Seems I'm the only one who appreciates the work around here..
KainsChylde Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Don't get us wrong. When done right, we are happy to show appreciation for hard work. But if he put so much hard work into making it, why couldn't he spend the extra few minutes to clean it?
ChancellorKremlin Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Not to mention when this was brought up to "his" attention the first time 'round with Descent, "he" wasn't exactly the friendliest of people.
BruceWayne Posted April 25, 2013 Author Posted April 25, 2013 Oh well.. Maybe if the mod wouldn't ruin other parts of the game that have nothing to do with his mod at all, we would appreciate it too. Check for errors doesn't help for finding dirty/wild edits. One would have to actually look at what FNVEdit does and how it works in order to easily identify those. Dirty edits are really bad, because it basically ruins every mod that edits the same thing that gets loaded before them. Btw. if he tells people the sun sets now at noon, this wouldn't be a dirty edit anymore, as this would be intended. Wild edits happen if you play around with stuff and forget about it. That happens to everybody who is modding. But not taking the time(which wouldn't be that much) to have at least a look and clear those things out, even after this is politely pointed out, is nothing short of major douchebaggery. Therefore the author will not find the appreciation here, that he may find on the nexus. To sum it up, at the moment this is like he made some delicious looking pudding and instead of serving it in a bowl, he just pours it over your lunch. It's still the delicious pudding, but your steak tastes now like feet.
zippy57 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 And a lot his edits have the potential to break other things. It's bad practice to modify a vanilla record to suit your needs. You always want to make a copy of it and then edit the copy, because some even if the base game never uses that record some other mod might be expecting it to be as-is. This applies, for example, to the scripting done to MetLightSwitchSCRIPT which now activates a number of his newly added NPCs. If another mod uses that assuming the script hasn't been changed, things go wrong. The Voice Type edit breaks any VO used by NPCs with the voice type CBRadioConversation. The edit for Cass' note is just mind-boggling, as is the alteration of gloves to be Head Wear and the Vault Lab Coat to cover the Hair slot. As has been said before, it was pointed out to him how dirty Descent was, and he was openly hostile towards the person who pointed that out. A modder who creates a piece of work that breaks the game as badly as Descent did and refuses to fix or even acknowledge the errors is not going to get much respect from his fellow modders.
DoctaSax Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 As long as it's dirty, giving it accolades sets a bad example to other beginners. And users will download it more, experience bugs more and blame other mods for it more who're not responsible. After all, how could the fault lie with the FOTM? That's why it shouldn't get it.There's an etiquette to this thing; you don't get in each other's way if you can help it. An innocuous wild edit in one load order is a quest breaker or an eye sore in another. Whether you're a modder dealing with a bug report or a player trying to figure out what's wrong with his load order, it's like having to live with somebody who doesn't clean up after himself, and you're the one who gets to trip over the crap on the floor.
Blunderbuss Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I guess I see what you all are saying. I would try and say that he doesn't know how to fix these things - But he seems to have fixed the 'dirty edits' that were causing CTD in the Gomorrah and V22 So, Maybe he just doesn't care if it trashes other folk's games.Nevertheless, I'm sure you can empathize with my skepticism when I'm presented with that list of 'no nos', yet I've never had any problems with the mod? Mind you, I don't run a lot of mods all at once. He seems to be a lot nicer recently when responding to bug problems. I can't find the original comment that he responded 'Rudely To', but maybe it was for a reason, I have no clue? Perhaps I should quit the fight now...I wonder how he'd respond if we told him about this stuff? Has anyone tried this time around?
zippy57 Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Here was his reply when told Descent had issues. The reason he doesn't know how to fix them is that he refuses to use the tool that would allow him to see them and fix them. And frankly a lot of the no-nos are no-brainers: Don't do anything without saying your mod does it, and don't include changes that aren't really changes.
Bashis Posted April 29, 2013 Posted April 29, 2013 glad i found this thread, i was looking for adventure/new world-space type mods for my new Vegas game to add, and had this sucker lined up to go into the game, no clue it had some pretty fatal errors in it, but that makes me wonder, are there any other red-flag mods that you know off the top of your head that will break shit consistently?
KainsChylde Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Have you tried Strangers Abroad? It doesn't add much in the way of new worldspaces, but there are a few new interiors, and a pretty well made companion. Chaper 3 is supposed to add a pretty large new world space, and theres a preview of it that you can access after the events of Chapter 2.
Bashis Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 yea i got that one, but i was more or less asking if anyone knew any popular mods off the top of their heads like the rockwell ones, in terms of breaking the game, so i know to avoid them in the future.
BruceWayne Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 If you open a quest mod in FNVEdit and you get a very colorful picture (as in a lot of records are overwritten), than chances are it does something it isn't supposed to do, unless it specifically claims it does. I'm also very wary of "overlord mods" or mods that combine FNV and FO3. That's just begging for problems and more trouble than it's worth, not to mention that it doesn't make much sense.
