When I press T to enter the perk tree, more often than not, the game crashes. It also happens sometimes when selecting new Perk from the tree. I googled it and I'm not alone, but I did not see any solid solution. Someone claimed I need some AAF patches, but they did not help. Others said I need to remove some big mods. I checked the Performance tab on Task Manager (W10 Professional) during game. The GPU (1080Ti) Utilization is on 100%, while the Dedicated GPU memory rarely goes over 2.7/11GB. I also have 16GB Shared GPU Memory, resulting in 27GB total GPU memory. So it seems I have more than enough room for textures (the game uses only 10% of available GPU memory), so I don't understand why should I remove big mods. I removed the Ikaros mod (huge amount of big textures basically) for testing the theory, but I still got the crash. I use a Perk tree mod (vaultgirl perk tree, only changes the visuals), but I used that in earlier games as well and never had problem with it. I did remove though for testing purposes, but the game crashes withou it too. I tried all 3 Load methods in the xSEPluginLoader (OnProcessAttach, OnThreadAttach, ImportAddressHook). I read somewhere that Buffout4.dll may actually help with my problem above, so I need to make it load. Yes, I also installed Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2019, the x64 version.

I tried all 3 Load methods in the xSEPluginLoader (OnProcessAttach, OnThreadAttach, ImportAddressHook). I read somewhere that Buffout4.dll may actually help with my problem above, so I need to make it load. spoonsinger Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 VIS and VIS-G are incompatible with AAF. (Used to be listed on the setup page. Doesn't seem to be now, but just read through the comments). For that matter Horizon is also incompatible for similar reasons. (in fact basically anything that adds significant functionality to the dodgy Flash UI engine). That said in the past, for the perk screen, I have had some success using LevelUpMenuEx, (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/28822 ), as long as you click on the only show available perks option at the bottom of the screen, (because if you don't and scroll up and down the list it will CTD as well).

phillout Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 AAF + DEF UI combo w/o Buffout4 is simply not supposed to work these days IMO, they all use so much Flash resources FO4 can barely handle. Drop in VIS-G (or R88 sorter, it doesn't actually matter) so Flash starts using even more resources - and it will start crashing the second time you try using that Flash-heavy perk screen. LevelUpMenuEx doesn't help either - it may prolong the life of your game to the 3rd or maybe the 4th time you open the perks screen. I had the same problems. just as many other people in the past, and it was discussed to death already But these days we've got Buffout4, and it's the solution.

I just came back to F4 a few days ago, so mostly I just worked on resurrecting my old load order (and adding some new mods), but otherwise, I did not look for UI mods.

I came back to it about 4 days ago myself. I just found out that DEF_UI causes a whole bunch of issues like crashing in transfer menu sometimes when DEF_UI is installed and the one you've mentioned here. That being the Perk tree crashes. It's weird though because it never did before. Gonna have to do a mod-by-mod check. Either way, good luck with yours mate.

Any other HUD mod would have to use it too - this is how you mod HUD in Bethesda games. And the most Flash-hungry mod here is AAF, actually. I never had this problem before AAF, while we all were using FP. As I said, Buffout4 fixes the problem permanently. Just install it - and you're done.
