Not always, but when the employer behaves in a blatantly illegal fashion, it most certainly can. And it can get very expensive very fast for the employer when they do so.

Such a termination would have been null and void. The standards labour courts set for termination without notice are massive. If you don't stand up for your rights, that doesn't mean they don't exist and cannot be enforced. Labour courts exist for a reason. The issue is western devs that worked in crunch for a month, maybe two max got hired by CDPR who works in crunch from right after feature hardening until ship, which is industry standard in eastern european countries, and so they probably had very little nice to say about it. The other issues raised were your standard cult of personality issues that quite frankly aren't any different than anywhere else where leads have direct control over their project arm, aka anywhere but EA, Activision or Ubi$haft, so people that have only worked at those places where you are contractually obligated to be nice to everybody to keep your job probably had a nice chunky dose of reality delivered to them.
