My First Load Order List

I have only recently gotten back into Fallout 4, after a fairly long hiatus, I hadn't even completed the main storyline when I stopped, mostly due to the crushing boredom and utter futility of Minuteman Radiant Quests.

But in the last four months or so, I made two attempts to restart, using some mods available here. Each time, I utilized more mods than ever before, and each time various crashes ensued.

So I did some reading, becoming aware that crashes might be a constant part of the experience Modded Fallout 4. But I also began to see patterns that gave me the clues to figure out what I needed to do.

So I put together the following Install Order list, mainly for AAF related nonsense, but also aware that I would need to understand the underlying basic principles used in AAF load order and apply them to any problematic group of mods. I know that the Load Order is a different thing altogether, but I assume it will run close to the install order.

I am not entirely finished, and I need to go do a deep dive into the Nexus and figure out what else I really want - and what I need to cut or don't yet understand. But I think it is 80-90% done.

So I thought I would post here, and ask the community to take a look at the load order list and tell me if they see any GLARING errors. I am not asking for a detailed critique - only that if you see something disastrous, or if you wish to recommend any principles, tools or specific advice, you would do me the great favor of doing so.

I am hopeful that if I can get it into tip-top shape, perhaps I might be able to offer it as a resource to the community.

By chance, which mod manager are you using? Mod Organizer 2 (recommended) and Nexus Mod Manager will, more or less, run the mods in the order you loaded them - but also allow you to easily change the load order. Vortex on the other hand will sort the mods for you. Knowing which you are using and what the actual load order is would help in determining if there are "glaring" issues. You can find the load order itself in loadorder.txt

Thanks for the reply. I am definitely planning to use Mod O at this moment, and have worked even more on the load order since I originally posted it. See it below.

I also have even more questions, of course.

Do all the patches need to go together at the end of the load order? Right before Scrap mods? I thought it was best practice to run immediately after the thing you needed to patch.

Is it really ok to load all these skin textures because I am using FSM?

Do all new collectibles all go into an override group, near the end of the load order, before AAF stuff? Can I use collectibles with all those mods that add new buildings to enter, like the Extended series?

Can you use Unique player and followers with all those body and skin textures?

Do I need to hold off installing mods until after coming out of vault 111? That can't mean excluding ESMs and all those face hair and body textures, right? I have to have those from the get-go, to get the character the way I want it to look before I exit the vault, right?

Generally speaking, yes. This is generally recommended, but not strictly required. It really depends on the patch itself. Patches are made to provide compatibility between two or more mods. The patch must load after all of the mods that it is patching, but doesn't necessarily need to be at the end of your load order. It is recommended though to put them at the end, to ensure that they are loading after the mods being patched.

Depends again, on the skin textures and implementation. All of the human skin textures use the base location: data\textures\actor\character\basehumanfemale (or basehumanmale). There are two flavors: regular and dirty - which could be loaded from different mods. However, if you have FSM and and any other body texture - then whichever female texture installed last (NMM) or has a higher priority (MO2) will be the one you see in game. This is true for the default location. If you are using custom location mods like UniquePlayer, or unique follower mods - then can safely put the textures of your choice in the specific folders for those mods. Meaning you can run Ida Body Texture in the default location - this will apply to all females in the game. On top of that you can run UniquePlayer with FSM, which will override the default location for the female player textures.

I assume by "collectibles" you are meaning the series of mods in your Override section? Generally, mods like Beantown Interiors add new places and those mods will add collectibles to existing locations. They may or may not provide compatibility packs to mods like Beantown Interiors - you'd have to check, but I wouldn't hold my breath. They should work together though regardless. Just don't expect to find one of the new collectibles in one of the new Beantown Interiors (or other new) locations.

Yes, UniquePlayer and Followers Redux has specific functionality to allow for custom body shapes and textures. Several companion mods like Insane Ivy, Heather Casdin, and Ellen the Cartographer also have features to customize the body/textures - either included in the base mod (Ivy), or via patch (Heather/Ellen).

Generally, this it is recommended to leave as many mods as you can out of the load order until leaving Vault 111. Mods which affect the character's looks are an exception to this and completely safe to install at game start. "Good" mod authors know if their mod will affect the game's intro sequence or be affected by it, and will disable the mod until leaving the Vault. This is not universal - a good rule of thumb is to disable them all until you leave, save the game - load the mods you want, then restart your saved game. There are almost no mods which provide meaning content while inside the Vault 111 tutorial wake-up section of the intro, so you would not be missing much more than visuals.

In reviewing your "load order" (which still isn't the loadorder.txt file I see that you're running CBBE and immediately following you have Enhanced Vanilla Bodies. This is OK if you are using EVB male. If you are also using EVB female this will directly conflict and override CBBE. This will not cause a crash, but CBBE bodies will not be seen in game. The same goes for your several body textures. You have FSM, Valkyr and Ida. Since Ida is last, that will be the texture set you see in game, unless you are using custom texture location mods (like UniquePlayer) see above question on that.

Yes, I am planning to use the EVB male, but no other options from that mod. I need to add that as a note so I can be reminded of it when I actually install the mod.

And that goes along with the reason that I have not posted loadorder.txt. I haven't installed anything this point. I just recently had several crashes in a row, so I swore up and down that I would wipe everything and figure out the install procedure and the load order in a text file before I installed anything. I realize that there is a point of diminishing returns in all that, and I am rapidly reaching that point. I am just going to have to throw some caution overboard, and just start, installing one at a time to make sure they work (blarg). I am also using unique player and followers, and I wanted to confirm I understood using multiple body and facial textures correctly.

It sounds like you need to load UP&F first, then FSM, and then the textures you want to use for the various bodies in the appropriate folders. I'll have to check the guide that I am using to see if I have that right.

Weellllll... It didn't quite work out as I hoped. BTW, this isn't a call for help (but if you want to comment I would very much welcome it), just my experiences. Here's a list of the highlights:

I was able to get the modded version to run, at least, but when I initiate a sex scene (either SEU or Violate), everybody just stands there looking at each other, like the 6th-grade dance you were forced to go to. Most of the time Devious Devices would put restraints on the character during violate scenes, but then my character would be restrained and we would still all still be staring at each other. I still can't figure out why this was happening, unless the Overlay patches' absence (see below) was responsible.

I did get my AAF error messages down to a single line, [AAF Error [010] "FM-Sedan Prewar 01-03 Backseat" not found], which I am probably excessively proud of.

I had a devil of a time with Unique Player and Followers. I think I understand it better now, because I fucked with it so much, but because I fucked with it so much I am not sure I could ever get it to work now without a complete re-install.

I am fairly sure (in MO2) that I hit replace instead of merge for several armor/clothes plug-ins/patches. That probably sunk it from the beginning, but who knows.

I had no success loading the overlay patches. Only the base patch would install at all, so I was totally mystified on how to install all the others (I was unable to 'set data directory' on any of these besides the base). I put up a flag on the support thread for the mod, so maybe someone will be willing to show me how stupid I am.

There were four or five mods that I initially forgot to install, all about crafting, so low impact on the rest of the mods, I believe.

I also figured out that I did not want several of the mods I had installed initially, mostly having to do with Bodyslide or Looksmenu pre-sets.

I am not certain I should keep the Femshepping Armor mods, as they don't play well with AWKCR, apparently. I think I have their style of armor adequately covered by other mods I had installed.

I am probably going to add Sim Settlements next time, because the thought of scrapping Sanctuary all over again fills me with fear and loathing.

The crafting is probably was too easy with all those crafting resources from the scrapping mod, so goodbye to that, I have decided.

I am seriously considering just installing ILER and Atomic Lust, just to finally see some sex, but the affinity grind necessary reminds me too much of real life, so maybe not. Does anyone have success with or prefer this?

So it's off to start the complete re-install. (I know, I know, welcome to modding.)

I have attached my final load order. Just be aware it didn't start out looking like this, it had just morphed into this by the end. Most of the five mods or so at the bottom would have been moved had I continued. If anyone's really interested I can post some of the other inventories/logs.
