[Solved] Good FPS, Screen Freezes, But No Crash To Desktop

Has anyone experienced screen freezes, but no crash to desktop and found out how to resolve it? I have good stable FPS with some stuttering here and there.

The game ran fine up until I exited the first dungeon. On my wat to Riverwood, the game froze after talking to a passerby a few questions into the conversation, and a second time shortly after the Standing Stones. I also managed to load the outside autosave after the dungeon with no issue.

My game currently has the least amount of script heavy mods I've ever had installed on a somewhat stable build, and was able to travel from city to city with maybe some crashes once in a good while.

I am hopping if anyone can help pinpoint the cause, maybe from experience. It's likely either SLAL sex animation count, corrupt texture, Expansion mod compatibility, modified plugin, or ENB related.

List of Information That Could Help

Textures

Before I got the game stable outside of the Alternative Start cell, I had an issue where I would have 6-18 FPS and spawned outside the carriage, then CTD a minute later. I tried a different start, but a short ways of making my way to Helgen half way across the map, the FPS dropped and it CTD'd. After some research, I found out the cause was Helgen Reborn, so I removed that. I also have a custom texture pack that included Noble Skyrim as a base, so I re-overwritten other textures with the mod.

So I tested it again, but the game CTD'd shortly after the vanilla start, but ran as it was supposed to. Next I put the textures back to how it was, and the same thing happened. So I guess spawning outside of the carriage is also caused by low FPS. So I fixed again by re-overwriting with Noble Skyrim, as well as removing the mod Enhanced Texture Detail (UV Tweaks), and now here we are.

This is also my first time using DynDoLOD.

ENB

I am using Caffeine ENB, and have an issue where when I modify the ENB at the main menu, it won't save changes. The same happens in game, but sometimes on the first try, and always after the first try, the ENB cursor doesn't appear. I can only do it in the ini file.

SLAL Animations

At the start of the Vanilla start dungeon after the dragon attack, I enabled a majority of the animations in the SLAL AnimLoader MCM. I usually activate 1/3rd.

PLUGIN Modifications

I removed all the "Error could not be resolved" errors I could find in TES5Edit. The most being the mod From the Deep, so not sure if I broke anything. I'm wondering if From The Deep is on average, a problem for most people?

Expansion Mod Compatibility

I'm using both JK's Cities Light with JK's Towns Light Beta, and Dx's ClefJ's Villages. Also Summerset Isle and Moonpath to Elsweyr if that matters.

If you just have a freeze for a few seconds, but then the game is pretty stable, you may have one of these two problems:

* A mod is spamming the log with stacktraces -> to verify just reproduce the problem, grab the papyrus log, and paste it here. If it is many MBs then probably it is that.

* Your PC cannot load the meshes and textures quick enough when needed -> Check your CPU and disk activity (use Process Explorer, while running Skyrim in a Window, in case you have a single monitor) to check it

Posted

As CPU say can be a mod problem or a machine problem. Verify it FIRST.

Your mesage is very good, but if you put links we can see the mods directly without search it.

Some of yours mod have heavy impact in the game and the way for locate the problem is disable it.

Start with DynDOLOD, can give a lot of problems if is bad made.

Next try disabling NobleSkyrimMod HD-2K.

If problem persist disable JKs Cities - Lite and SuperLite

In last disabling Dx's ClefJ's Villages

Test the diferent configuration startting ALWAYS A NEW GAME with Alternate Start.

You can have a problem with ENB, try disable it.

I doubt the problem can come from Caffeine ENB but can come from YOUR enblocal.ini

Revise the ENB Step guide.

If problem persist, as i presume you have MO, give us loadorder.txt, modlist.txt, plugins.txt and papyrus log.

Sometimes the order for load this heavy mods that change a lot of things is critical.

It's 329kb, and it's permanent freezing, not a few seconds of freezing.It's 329kb I have to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and end the task with Tank Manager to exit the game.

I get a lot of the same messages half way up the log with the same (9F040003).

Spoiler

warning: Assigning None to a non-object variable named "::temp4"

I was also getting a lot of messages from the Blush When Aroused mod at the start of the Vanilla start path, so I disabled the messages in the MCM. Aside from that, I din't do anthing else in the BWA MCM.

I am also using a fair amount of NPC mods such as Inhabitants of Skyrim, Immersive Wenches, Interesting NPCs, Populated Lands and Roads Path, and War Zones. Someone gave me a mod to test a while back, but never got Skyrim Stable for the new build because I prioritize 3D modeling too much in my spare time. It is a Yiffy Age Standalone Races mod that replaces half of the races with Khajiit type races such as cheetah, panther, etc. It does seem fine in RaceMenu, however I have not seen a single cat so far, but only made it to Riverwood. That could be the cause.

The freezing is also more likely to happen at a certain range from the Standing Stones, and does seem to happen within a set time period.

I'm gonna try testing it from the Sleeping Giants Inn to Whiterun. So far all freezing was outdoors. It is 4:00AM, so tomorrow I will set up a mods list without the mods Yiffy Age Standalone Races and Blush When Aroused, as they are likely the culprits. I will post results here, and will post my Papyrus log If there are still issues.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT:

Also have a GTX 1080 and an intel 5820K OC 4.5ghz (6 core). Using 2K textures and for most mods with the option, or in MCM, I chose performance, though textures memory can still be the issue. I 2 monitors 2560x1080, and 1920x1080.

A total freezee is similar to a CTD.

The CDT happend when the module, game or util, can't control the situation and make shutdown.

A total freezee happend when a module enter in infinite loop and the rest of the game is waiting for it.

Try it, i doubt  the problem can come from one of theses mods, but the only way of verify it is disable it.

You appear a expert user, but if you have CTD or Total Freezee maybe you are fault of the stability tools.

Install this if you not have it:

SKSE Memory Patch... only a ini file but very helpfull

Crash Fixes 12... very importan.. you NEED this

ENB... of course have it but verify you have the last version 0.349

Load Game CTD Fix... Only for load game but help

Maybe you have a bad setting in the ini files. Try correct it whit BethIni

Make another try. If the problem persist, maybe you need OsAlocators.

If you have 250 pluging and more than 300 mods the memory manager of SKSE can overload.

The only solution is install SKSE Plugin Preloader and activate "UseOSAllocators=1" in CrashFixPlugin.ini

Read the web page of Crash Fixes 12, maybe you must change some configurations in others files.

Your problem appear to be caused by a memory out problem.

Post a mod list. It may be that the problem is not a particular mod but the fact that you have too many mods which add a lot of content to the game.

You could also try without the ENB by using Shift-F12 (or whatever your ENB uses) to temporarily disable it.

Okay, managed to play from the Alternate start cell up to right before we were about to exit the dungeon/cave before it crashed.

Here is my current log and ini information. Had 197 active plugins. I also managed to fix the ENB issue.

I'm gonna rebuild my custom texture pack from scratch and exclude a fair amount of them. Also gonna try disabling the heavy hitters (Shout Like A Virgin, and From The Deeps).

BAD... TOOOO BAAAAADDDD...

You MUST install all yours mods with MO in the NORMAL way for show it in the mod list.

MO make all the necesay mix and put all the necesary file hooks for join the files.

And we can go crazy triying know WHAT mods have you installed manually.

Your mod list MUST look as:

*Unmanaged: 360WalkandRunPlus-RunBackwardSpeedAdjust
*Unmanaged: AddItemMenu2

*Unmanaged: AKElvenTeenies

If not look as it, you have making some bad.

I not use MO, only have it as reference for try help. But sure any other expert in the forum can confirm me.

I not sure about if your game are loading all the dll's for the plugins.

I think you must NOT have that files in your main skyrim directory... i use NMM and not have it.

WHY you have theses files with your TESV.exe

CrashFixPlugin.dll

CrashFixPlugin.ini

Sexlab.log

ddi.log

and a lot more.... that is an indication of a BAD INSTALLATION.

The mods that have a dll MUST BE inside SKYRIM\DATA\SKSE\plugins

You not must have it with TESV.exe

Please... RE-install at least Crash Fixes 12 in the NORMAL way, and try.

Okay, I'll try separating some of the SKSE mods. Yeah, I guess I done goofed on the Crash Fixes install. I have the ini and dll file in two places, so I guess I was gonna delete the one in the directory and forgot it didn't belong there.

As for the mod added logs, I have no idea why they are there. Nothing from those mods are outside of MO. As far as I know, they pop up there all the time after running the game through MO, even after I did a clean install. They are Papyrus related logs, and have a Papyrus Compiler folder in the directory going by a Merge Plugins Tutorial. As for the .dll files go, I believe the only one that shouldn't be there is the CrashFixes.dll. The rest is from SKSE going by this tutorial, ENB, Steam,and SKSE Plugin Preloader. Not all dll files belong in MO. I believe the CreationKit used to have it's own folder in the directory, but now always installs in the directory through Steam.

I will be very busy, and probably won't be able to report back for a few days, thanks.

These freezes are a sort of overload.

your machine just takes time to load everything.

So, If I were you, I would simply reduce the quality or/and the quantity of several contents in your game.

You're asking too much work to your computer.

point of performance:

- Tree textures (reduce them if you use 2K or 4K)

- quality lod (with dyndolod or tes5gen, you can reduce the quality of your lod)

- iShadowMapResolution=1024 (no need to have a 4096 or 2048)

- reduce all fmeshlod in your skyrimprefs.ini

fMeshLODFadePercentDefault=4.0000
fMeshLODFadeBoundDefault=1.0000
fMeshLODLevel2FadeTreeDistance=2048.0000
fMeshLODLevel1FadeTreeDistance=2844.0000
fMeshLODLevel2FadeDist=3072
fMeshLODLevel1FadeDist=4096

- reduce your [Particles]
iMaxDesired=

High values are useless

- parallax can create freeze

- heavy spawns may create freezes too (like "Beast of Tamriel" or "Obis" or other monster mods"

- optimize your load order. Some load orders are better than other. Make it efficient. Do several tries

- mountains textures can create freezes too. If necessary, reduce them. Some mountain textures can be really heavy (dds + n.dds + parallax). Optimize them.

- you are using Noble Skyrim. Good choice. But maybe use the 1K version (if you actually use the 2K version). Just overwrite the 2K with the optional 1K version.

- check all streams, vapors, the dust,.......all these small transparent details. You can search for performance versions.

- and last, Grass! optimize your grass mod if you use one.

in the skyrim.ini, increase your iMinGrassSize=

60, 65, 70 are nice values

55,50 or less can create freezes.

That is totally true, but is already said.

Half of the things that you point here related to ini files and are corrected with BethIni. 3 days ago i say:

On 8/21/2018 at 2:37 PM, GenioMaestro said:

Is know that some bad settings in the ini files can cause CTD or/and Total Freezee.

Have textures in 1k, 2k, 4k, or 8k and use mesh low poly or high poly only must make your game run fast or slower, but not mean that your game must make CTD or Total Freezee.

A good configuration in game and mod's make your game run smoot, is evident.

But a bad configuration not mean inevitable CTD or Total Freezee

If you install in your game some overcharged mod maybe you can get low fps.

If you want play Skyrim at 10 or 15 fps because you want see it TOO BEAUTIFULL is your decision.

This OP only have 215 mods. I have more in my small machine, and see people with 350, 400, 500 mods.

Install a lot of mods and/or some overcharched mods not mean CTD or Total Freezee

I make it some times for try some super overcharged mods and i get very low fps, but not CTD or Freezee.

I have a 4 years old machine with a simple gtx 660 2g.

What you think if i install in this machine COT+ELFX+pure water+verdant+SFO + a lot more...

The evident answer is not make this, your machine not support it.

And is totaly true, at least in part. I get very low fps, near 8/10 and exagerated change cell times, get from 3/5 seconds to 8/10 seconds. Sometimes i get 2 or 3 fps, but none CTD or Total Freeze. ENB make a fantastic work.

If you install in your machine mods that your machine not support you get low fps.

If you get CTD or Total Freeze is for bad game configuration or for bad configuration of the stabily tools.

Maybe can be for bad configuration in the mod or by incorrect load order, bad bash patch or merge patch.

I think the problem of the OP is related to the manual installation of theses SKSE mods.

Is very strange get log files in the main skyrim directory every time the game is run.

Is evident a bad installation and i think is the base of the problems.

Every time we make a manual operation we have the oportunity of make it bad and that end in problems.

Okay, I tested it again. I removed the HDTSkyrimMemPatch, Werewold Remastery. and just because, Populated Lands and Road Paths. Loading time is 1/2 to 1/3 of what it used to be. The game did crash prior every time I changed something in the UUNP Morph sliders, but fixed it by changing AlignHeapAllocate=0 to AlignHeapAllocate=1. The game had max FPS that I always lock via ENB to 50 FPS to avoid possible HDT bugs. There were no stutters except for once after exiting from reading a book. However, the game Crashed right before exiting the Helgen dungeon, and a good minute after exiting, but still no stutters or FPS drops after exiting.

MO gave this log twice.

My textures vary from 512, 1124, and 2k, except for skin textures which are 4k for females. NPCs only have one hair mod type, SkyHair. For the Veydosbrom grass mod, I went with performance, (not sure if I picked Vanilla or Dence), 1K quality, and 1K lite. There isn't nearly as much grass as I use to have on previous builds. I am also using Skyrim Performance Plus. For DynDoLOD, TexGen is 256, and Output is 512. Also not using parallax textures, but did in the past.

I'm also not using any spawning mods, just some mods that add NPCs, but not heavy ones. If optional, I lower the added NPC count in the MCM by half or 2/3rds.

I separated all the SKSE plugin mods I had together with JC containers more at the bottom.

First, I'm gonna do a few more tests by disabling the ENB via F12, and reverting the Papyrus ini edits I made. I changed the following.

fExtraTaskletBudgetMS=1.6
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=1000.0

As suggested, I will make some further performance ini edits. I also always turn off detailed shadows in the ENB, My ini files are already available upthread if not already viewed. If that fails, I will reinstall Skyrim, SKSE, and save the following.

d0805b1dfa96e7d0088eb854cc680108.png

If nothing else works, I guess I will start deleting mods, which is funny because I had heavier builds before with FPS drops. Even a heavier ENB like Tetrchromatic. My GPU also doesn't seem to be running as hot compared to past builds, so likely not a texture issue. Also, I had to rebuild MO from scratch, so not entirely sure about past ini settings.

Okay, thanks! The test was short, but the ini edits suggested by @marmotte seemed to have fixed the crashing.

First you have a bad parameter, miss a equal sing in this line. Is not severe but better have it:

iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=76800

Then, all your problem are caused by a bad configuration in the ini files???

And this can't be corrected with BethInin as i said four days ago???

For correctly use BethIni you must open the program, activate the marks for ENB Mode and Recomended Tweaks, click Ultra because your machine support it and press save&exit.

Go to game for see the results and open Bethini again for manually change any parameter and never more click a preset for not lost the changes made manually, until you have problems and/or change a bad parameter.

I do not recommend manually editing ini files, a manual error can lead to serious problems, such as those you have had.

With BethIni, in the View Distance tab you have near all the parameters for the LOD from the ini files.

After change LOD in that tab, you must change the final LOD inside the game, in configuration->Graphics

Of course, you can use a tool for change the predefined LOD of the game ussing DynDOLOD or TES5LODGen.

First you have a bad parameter, miss a equal sing in this line. Is not severe but better have it:

iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=76800

Then, all your problem are caused by a bad configuration in the ini files???

And this can't be corrected with BethInin as i said four days ago???

Oh yeah. Sorry, I actually did fix that and have been messing with it a bit.

I changed fMeshLODFadePercentDefault back to the  default at 1.2, and fMeshLODFadeBoundDefault to 150.0000 and got some good results. Aw well as fLODFadeOutMultActors=2.5 to 6.0.

I will back up my ini files and do as you suggest, thanks,. Will also have to re-install my grass mod with different options, because see no grass aside from other types of plants.

Yes! Bethini worked great, thank you. :)  Although those other 2 mods were a problem as well. (HDTskyrimMemPatch & Werewolf Mastery)

Using BethiniUltra with edits. I do get some short small Fps drops though, and 10-20 fps drops at Riverwood during the morning/day, but that's expected on most setups. Most of the ENB setting were enabled as well. I may have to do some more tweaking later on when I test Whiterun though.

I changed this as well in my ENBlocal.ini, which may have also had a huge impact. Not sure why it wasn't already changed.

ReservedMemorySizeMb=256 to ReservedMemorySizeMb=512

I accidentally also had InitProxyFunctions= set to true after reinstalling the ENB a number of tests ago, which I set back to false.

I also re-enabled Populated Lands Roads Paths and removed Dx's ClefJ's Villages just in case.

So these are my new ini settings that work well so far.

Not bad, but I think they look similar to mine on a 4 years old machine with a simple gtx 660 2g at 50-60 fps...

In these screenshots I only have ELFX + URWL + Imaginator ...

Use ENB Boost, my machine does not support full ENB ...
