There are very few accounts of men actually successfully escaping sinking submarines. During WWII, when "submarines" were effectively submersible surface ships (torpedo boats), the few men that did survive sinkings were almost invariable bridge crew - men whose combat stations were on the outside of the hull. Those that survived were usually swept overboard as the boat sank. As usual, The Powers That Be thought he made this up. It wasn't until ten years after his death that it was found that, surprise, everything he said was absolutely true, and gee, why would he lie about it anyway? 1
