AKM Posted October 14, 2025 Posted October 14, 2025 (edited) A really well done video on Apollo 13. It includes a more in depth analysis of what, exactly, went wrong and why as well, which I have not seen in other representations of the event. The best part? The investigative conclusion. Whoever made that statement did so in a way that you would not see done today. I did not see finger pointing. I did not see "the blame game". I did not see scapegoating. Only [paraphrase] 'This is a problem that was simply missed. We are currently doing the most ambitious thing mankind has ever attempted, therefore near perfection is a requirement.' Yes, it's two hours. No, you won't regret your two hours. Edited October 14, 2025 by AKM 1

However, as our culture values "the ONE thing", she is accurate and provides information that isn't common, except for those who have looked at rockets for a while.

That's one of the things I like about the Apollo 13 video above that was sorely lacking in movies. (Yeah, I know. Movies. Ugh.). The fact that as soon as that happened, it wasn't about the moon anymore. It was about working the problem and trying to get home. Sure, there was some of that in the movie, but I got the impression that it was rather glossed over. Amy talking about launch windows. I asked one of the Spec Ops guys that I worked with regularly why every single one of them were so chill and laid back, never feeling the need to flex. He told me because they already knew they were better than everyone they would outside of the military, the only real people that they needed to flex on was other Spec Ops dude. To be fair to the person in the video, I went to JSOU back when it was just standing up at Hurlburt, and have never been to the campus after it moved to Tampa, so it may be a difference in generations of SOF.

My understanding is that this particular individual (as with many who are youtube famous) might not be precisely what / who he puts himself forth to be. I've seen somewhere or other that while he started in SEAL training, he either "rang the bell" (quit voluntarily) or was forced out. I think it was the latter, but not certain on that. Of course, I could well have the individual mixed up with another. A great many of them seem to like the spotlight these days. Regardless, I believe that he is making a totally valid point: Don't look down on people, especially given what you happen to see of them. You have absolutely no idea what their history is. Same goes for fighting some random on the street. I've seen a few apparently former Unit guys who, according to looks, you wouldn't have a clue that they are former Tier 1 operators. Even while active in the Unit, that's the whole point: blend in anywhere, look like you belong there / inconspicuous. Never have understood those who love to fight, given that you have absolutely NO CLUE what the capabilities of your random opponent on the street are. AKM Posted December 15, 2025 Posted December 15, 2025 This is, quite literally, where the term 'Government Cheese' came from. The story is that the government didn't want the dairy farms to go out of business, so they started buying the farmers' cheese. The problem? Not enough people wanted to buy the farmers' cheese. Solution? Renovate and climate control abandoned caves, then store the cheese - at taxpayers' expense. Cheese that you don't need, and are only buying to artificially hold up a sector of the economy that would go under if you didn't. Apparently, keeping the farms going was more important than producing something people actually needed/wanted. Nothing like a command economy in a supposedly free market society. But, hey, when it's someone else's money you're buying stuff with, it's no problem!
