Why do people think dead-eyed thousand yard stares are a good idea?

EYE TRACKING.  Oblivion had it.  FO3 had it and so did FO3's bitch, New Vegas.  NPCs eyes track and when you move out of their field of vision then they turn their heads and their facing and realign their eyes.  Head tracking AND eye tracking..  Somehow in the 'genius' that is Skyrim that feature is absent.

Stand behind an NPC in Skyrim; when they hold their facing and swivel their head, console TFC 1 and take a look at their eye position.  They are NOT looking at your toon.  It's as bad as the scripted NPC to NPC dialogue where they don't look at one another, they ARE looking at the player's toon.  All I can think is, 'Why the fuck are you talking to me?'

Eye tracking? You're complaining about eye tracking? Skyrim doesn't even have working lip syncing. It did but Bethesda broke it and went"...well shit, not my problem."

But seriously I tested it and eye tracking looks horrible in Skyrim. It's because of how the eye mesh is ovular instead of circular (they are dome shaped) like Oblivion and FNV. It allow for more detail to be add to the eye for more realism (Skyrim eyes have canthus) but makes it so that when the eyes move around too much they brake the illusion since its just a texture and not actual skin (you can see the canthus details outside of the corner of the eye *ew*). If the eye meshes were circular they'd be symmetrical but have less details (they wouldn't have canthus and would look like baby dolls ala Oblivion) being symmetrical stops the problems from arising. Bethesda opted to make the whole heads move to avoid these problems the best they could. and also got rid of first person dialog zooming...

Game characters don't have emotions, so much of the eye expression is gone. (1000 yard stare) only way to give expression to eyes is manually (racemenu) move the upper and lower eye lids, move eye balls left/right up/down, manually move lips for the illusion of emotion. then take SS then zero everything out again. It's not that anyone thinks dead eye 1000 yard stares are good it's just more trouble then most are willing to go through for a screenshot. and probably one of the least looked at things during development.

We have to thank little Miss 'potato-head-chargen-is the-way to-go' dev and the BethSoft supervisor who backed her bullshit scheme for all that Skyrim Chargen IS NOT.  i forget her name, but she was called out by another dev in a blog after the post-XBox release ruckus started about how dumbed down Skyrim is.  It was HER idea and somehow she crammed it down the other devs' throats in the span of one meeting.  I guess she was sucking the right dick(s).

YES, I'm complaining about it.

I would have prefered if the NPC actually turned around full-body to face me if they had a line to roll. Too many times has Aela sent a shiver down my spine by sticking her head out in that broken-back posture, giving me the silent stare of death in some pitch black cave...most uncomfortable.

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I've seen a mod that alters this somewhere but I'll be damned if I remember the name.

I love Skyrim, but I, too was pretty pissed about so many of the dumbdowns. I guess next single player TES will just be an FPS with no chargen at this rate.

Also, give me back levitation, acrobatics and spellmaking, all the weapon skill types from Morrowind, and real time lockpicking, por favor.  I don't need perks.  I'd play a feckin' mmo if I wanted that shit.  Next gen Morrowind, please.

Still, I love Skyrim.

Edit: Sorry, just realized I'm adding to a derail. We should be bashing Dark0ne here.  I get confuzzed :)

I had the perfect screenshot of a Riverwood guard grinning really stupidly to add to the conversation about emotions but I seem to have misplaced it.

I'll look around for it and post it when it's irrelevant later on. >.>;

A simple mod that adds a nice feature to combat!?

Thanks for this. Probably wouldn't have ever stumbled onto it.

No problem! If you check the Recent Files every now and then you'll find a nice thing through the copious amounts of punch turds.

Thing that bugs me most is that the player character doesn't even look at close-by NPCs the way that the other NPCs do. So my character is just staring off into space while someone next to her is talking to her lol. It looks incredibly awkward... I'm a little surprised no one has figured a way to add it to the player character.

When I play Guild Wars 2 sometimes, it really adds a lot that the character will look at NPCs surrounding them, and will look only at the one targetted as well. Kinda wish they had that in Skyrim. I can live with eyes not moving but, not even turning their head/body to look towards someone they're talking to is just strange.

There is a player headtracking mod out there, but it was really buggy last I used it. My PC would crane its head to the far right and stare off into space if no NPCs were nearby (within like 5 feet).

FOUND IT! SO HAPPY!

Here's something interesting, i actually wonder why this wasn't part of the game in the first place. http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/57239

Because 12 year olds on Xbox 360s don't understand the concept of tax, like as not O_o

It ought to be educational. Also, some MMOs have taxation included in their systems, although in varying degrees of success.

Recent Files is a wild place. I usually do 'Top Files', 'endorsements last 3 days'.

I think that might be one of those mods that could end up being severely underrated. It was exactly what I needed in my game, as well. It's so good.

I don't think Levitation will be back. It's in the lore that it was banned 5th and I think too many people will be kissed about broken lore for it to return soon.
