Redswift Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 So I have this problem on skyrim where I crash whenever I try to load an exterior cell. Judging by the fact that if I remove my slightly-heavy ENB preset (Tetrachromatic ENB), everything loads just fine or if I manage to get into an exterior cell (by starting a new game for example) my game will be stable and I'll be able to play for hours and hours without any issues, I've concluded that my game is just a bit too heavily-modded. Thus, what I'm trying to do is locate those mods that are the most script-heavy, or generally cause the biggest performance issues or incompatibilities, and remove them. At least those that I can live without. However, I'm no expert, so I'll need your help on verifying if the mods I suspect are actually script-heavy and if removing them will make any difference. So let's start with these: Footprints, When Vampires Attack, Deviously Enslaved, Blush When Aroused (I only use it for PC, not NPCs), Even Better Quest Objectives (I know it sounds stupid for it to affect performance, but it requires so many patches / esps...), Im a Customer Dammit, Sleep Tight and finally Disparity (I have no clue about this one). Feel free to point out any other mods that are script-heavy / cost performance / cause issues. I'll include my modlist and specs below. Specs: CPU: FX-6350 RAM: 8GB DDR3 @ 1866Mhz GPU: GTX 1060 3GB OS: Win7 64-bit Modlist (contains the esps disabled by Wrye Bash too) 0 0 Skyrim.esm 1 1 Update.esm 2 2 Dawnguard.esm 3 3 HearthFires.esm 4 4 Dragonborn.esm 5 5 Skyrim Project Optimization - AWP3RATOR Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 You say your problems happen when loading the game cold into your most recent save, and generally happens when in an exterior cell? I've seen and had this happen to me as well. Best I can surmise it is that on cold loading (the first save after game starts) the game ALSO starts all the scripts, services, etc. from that save. So if you are in an exterior cell, using a combination of heavy graphics and script heavy mods - you can eventually get the type of behavior you are experiencing. I've solved this a number of ways, most recent and imo best is last 1. Start new game with alternate start, don't bother setting up the character, just exit looksmenu and load your save. 2. At main menu open console and type 'coc qasmoke' then load game after arriving in the test cell. 3. (best imo) Install and use: Load Game CTD fix (I personally no longer have regular loading issues from cold, only occasionally and an immediate restart resolves it). Also not a bad idea to run Crash Fixes, if you are not.
Redswift Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 I'm already using both Crash Fixes and Load Game CTD Fix. My game loads saves in interiors just fine and I can teleport around in other interiors using coc command, but as soon as I try to go outside, I crash after the loading's finished and is about to disappear. Edit: Apparently, I was wrong. I thought it was that issue about loading the game cold too which I had gotten before and I fixed by installing Load Game CTD Fix but this time, I can't go out to exteriors at all, even when starting a new game. Weird thing is that last time I played, everything was just fine and I didn't change anything in my load order but now no matter what save I load, it just doesn't work. I CTD every time I go to an exterior cell.
Andy14 Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 I guess it's several weather mods, several road mods, Hunter/Bandit mods. Mods that change Worldspace, Encounter Zones, Level Outfits. I do not think script is the cause.
Redswift Posted November 1, 2017 Author Posted November 1, 2017 I guess it's several weather mods, several road mods, Hunter/Bandit mods. Mods that change Worldspace, Encounter Zones, Level Outfits. I do not think script is the cause. So should I start just cutting them out? I don't really think I have an excessive amount of them, or anything else. Let's see here. For the weather, I use the standalone Tetrachromatic ENB along with Wonders of Weather for effects running in performance mode. For the roads, Real Roads of Skyrim. By Hunter / Bandit mods, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. I've removed all of my combat overhauls for this specific playthrough and I don't really have any mods that add outfits to them, or any other NPCs. Except of course a UUNP replacer for females which I don't know if it counts. Now, most importantly, I do use Populated Skyrim Hell Edition plus Interesting NPCs which adds a ton of NPCs all over skyrim. However, I had a very stable playthrough with both of them before and no real performance issues (never dipped below low-50s even in the middle of Riften). Now what's changed from my last playthrough is I've added a lot of Devious mods which from my understanding are heavily scripted, thus I originally concluded that script was the cause.
Andy14 Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Examples of changes to Worlspace / External cells from your list: Real Roads.esp proudspiremanortnf.esp RealisticWaterTwo ... several RelightingSkyrim ... several WondersofWeather.esp fallentreebridges.esp Populated Cities Towns Villages.esp and more. If you're sure it's a DD-Mod the reason should be in the Papyrus.log entries.
yatol Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Thus, what I'm trying to do is locate those mods that are the most script-heavy, or generally cause the biggest performance issues or incompatibilities, and remove them. At least those that I can live without. it's that your problem you have load the save without mod x there was a warning mod x is missing, you ignored and now there's problems you don't have when you try with a new game and taking care of those problems after mod x is no longer a master of the save... complicated

Right now, I'm trying to pinpoint the culprit in a new game as well. yatol Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 No, as I already mentioned, the problem started without me making any changes in my load order. Right now, I'm trying to pinpoint the culprit in a new game as well. as if problems appear out of nowhere you want a scenario for your crash? last year, when you were level 13, for some reason, your removed high level npc from your load order you load the game, don't crash, don't see anything strange, you think it's good and keep going until a few days ago, you became level 80 you buy some stuff to ysolda, then go to belethor, try to get out, and ctd what happened? the quest that send dragons is still active timer since last dragon > global value dragon timer when you were at belethor when you get out, time for a dragon attack the quest load dragon x, that use template y game pick dragon z from template y dragon z it's a dragon from high level npc (the stuff that was put in the save, it's still there) dragon x is a default race (maleheadnord and maleeyenord), with wornarmor skindragonsomething defaultrace can wear skindragon, it can wear everything skindragon have bone leftwing, tail, jaw... default race skeleton don't have some of those bones -> ctd or something broken that had condition player level > 80 or that kind of script add to belethor door function onactivate() if player.getlevel > 79 wait(5) player.setrace defaultrace player.additem skinspider player.equipteim skinspider endif endfunction
AWP3RATOR Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Listen to Yatol.... speaks the truth. Problems generally don't come from nowhere. Something, somewhere changed along the way. The problem you have now, is trying to figure that thing out.
Guest Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 From what I've heard, the game can CTD if you have too many animation mods. Try removing FNIS.esp and FNISspells.esp, rerun FNIS and see if it gets better. They are just for screenshots anyway. Also, these mods together adds a ton of NPCs to the world and that might be too much for the engine to handle: 94 5e Populated Lands Roads Paths Legendary.esp 149 95 Populated Cities Towns Villages.esp 150 96 Immersive Patrols II.esp 151 97 Provincial Courier Service.esp One more thing. If you ever increased the number of uGridsToLoad, that's a sure fire way to cause instability in your game, so check that's it has the default value(5 I think).

The problem you have now, is trying to figure that thing out. I understand that, but again, the problem persists even in a new game, so it's not about a change that was made along the way, even if there was one, but about a mod or something that's causing me issues out of the box. From what I've heard, the game can CTD if you have too many animation mods. Try removing FNIS.esp and FNISspells.esp, rerun FNIS and see if it gets better. They are just for screenshots anyway. The number of animations is worrying me as well. Right now, I'm at about 7000. I think I'm at FNIS's limit. Would switching to FNIS XXL make things even worse? As for the fnis esps, you mean just unticking them? Because that doesn't change the animation count. However, I'm gonna try completely removing FNIS Spells.
valcon767 Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 the number of animations may be part of the problem (depending on which FNIS you use)... the closer to the limit of FNIS you get the more instable it tends to be. FNIS 6.3 regular limit is 8000 animations. I use FNIS 7.0 beta 5 XXL (lets me have 20,000 animations) and have not had it cause me any problems (as far as I can tell) and have about 10,500-12,500 animations in game. the FNIS 6.3 XXL will handle up to 12,000 animations (somewhere between 10,000 and the 12,000 limit is when most people have issues {if they do at all} when using it). I myself had no problems at all using 6.3XXL until I actually broke its 12k animation limit which caused me to simply upgrade to the 7.0 beta 5 XXL. I doubt it is sheer numbers of NPCs causing the problem either (Drunken Huntsman in my game has 18 NPCs in it at a minimum and up to 30 depending on time of day) it is possible that one of the mods that adds NPCs also changes something else that could be causing the problem. generally more NPCs = lower framerate. I do not see any obvious mod incompatibilities in the posted mod list. but something that could cause the problem is if something overwrote XPMSE (just makes sure nothing overwrites it). I did see one possible conflict but am not sure if it is actually one you have Prison Overhaul (with patches) installed and something called Prison.esp ..may want to make sure what Prison.esp does.

Thanks, I'll try XXL and see how it goes. As for prison.esp, it's from Raven Bleak Prison Remastered and it shouldn't really be incompatible but I've removed it anyways, for now. And not just this one, I've trimmed my load order quite a bit, removed some of those mods that change WorldSpace as suggested before, all of my DD-Related mods and some more, and nothing works. This is getting really frustrating. Oh, and by the way, both XPMSE's and Realistic Water Two's authors suggest to place their mods pretty low in the load order, but LOOT puts them pretty high for me. So should I leave them there or lower them?
Veladarius Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Few things I see: 1- Creature Framework - if you have this at the default settings it will scan every actor within a 2 cell radius every 5 seconds. I found this caused instability and random crashes for me, setting the interval to 20-30 seconds and dropping the distance to 1 cell stopped the instability. 2- XPMSE - Unless you want the different animations and such provided by it then disable it, it is a resource hog and prone to errors. You don't need it to use the skeleton and this esp should have been optional. 3- Footprints - Every footprint has a timer associated with it telling it when to be disabled/removed and is another mod that is a resource hog. 4- Realistic Water and Realistic Water Legendary - I don't have it installed right now but I thought that you should use one esp or the other not both. Mods that change world spaces won't cause issues unless: - They edit/remove something that is referred to by something else - An area was changed and a door was moved/removed and the nav mesh was not updated - The mod itself is poorly written and has script issues such as missing properties or aliases not being filled (have seen this with a number of mods) As for Ugrids to Load it depends on their system and how stressed papyrus is. I run Ugrids to load at 7 and can play for several hours without a crash Look at your papyrus log for mods causing repeating errors during game play or ones that are constantly doing things (I have seen some that have multiple entries per second and run constantly), these cause stress to papyrus and can cause dump stack errors which can cause issues for currently running scripts as it just dumps any processes that are waiting to run. If something important was dumped you may not see the effect immediately but it would appear eventually. Find and fix any errors in the log and see if you can reduce the time as to how often a mod updates or does things in the background.

As for XPMSE, I should have just the mod installed but not the esp and I'll be able to use the skeleton? I don't really think I use any of its animations. Finally, for Ugrids to load, it's at the default value, I haven't changed any settings regarding them at all.

The XPMSE skeleton does not require the esp, the esp just allows the use of alternate animations for the player and walking animations for surrounding npc's. For now just disable everything including the cloak but leave the esp or you will have issues concerning the missing scripts, you can remove it the next new game you start. Make sure you check the settings on Creature Framework, the default values will make your game unstable.
Andy14 Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 All hints from Veladarius are correct. But what does it have to do with the original problem? I mean - there are many clues here that are really moronic. Too many animations, XPMSE etc. Realy ??? Have you considered observing my advice regarding your mods? Of course not - I suppose. Otherwise you would not write this nonsense. "I never knew I had Realistic Water wrongly installed". I only give hints, nothing more - you have to think yourself. Try to solve your problem with the hints available, because you have not done anything yet - right. And is not a problem of FNIS, XPMSE or other shit

Thanks, I'll try it. I'm starting a new game everytime I test out a change anyways. It's not at just that one save that I'm crashing. All hints from Veladarius are correct. And is not a problem of FNIS, XPMSE or other shit Veladarius pointed out a mistake I made in the installation of the mod and I corrected it. I don't see what you mean by nonsense and I don't see the point of your condescending attitude. You suggested I use too many mods that alter the Worldspace, and I already answered that I removed the majority of them and started a new game and still crashed. You gave a pretty straight-forward answer so I don't know what's that whole thing about hints either. I appreciate the support but being aggressive doesn't solve anything.
Redswift Posted November 2, 2017 Author Posted November 2, 2017 Update: I think I've pinpointed the cause of the problem as to something really stupid and completely irrelevant that I hadn't thought of. Some days ago I noticed that there was the Unofficial Skyrim Patch in my game's data folder (that was really weird because I use Mod Organizer, and I already have USLEEP) and I deleted it. I had no idea how it got there but I assumed it would only cause issues, even though of course it was disabled even in Skyrim's own launcher. Anyways, long story short, I tried running the game through its own .exe, no mods or anything, and I got the same crash. I'll try to reinstall the base game and see how it goes.

Don't reinstall the game just have steam check the files, it will replace anything that is bad and does not match up. I don't get why so many people's first response to problems if they can't figure out something is to reinstall everything. Learn to read the papyrus log and make use of the various tools out there (Skyrim Performance monitor is a good one) and figure out what is wrong. The last time I reinstalled Skyrim was over 3 years ago and that was only because of a drive failure. I run a heavily modified game (almost max on esp/esm's and I have merged a number of mods) but I spent time learning to troubleshoot my game and can run now for hours without a crash (is usually sexlab related, too many people having sex constantly can do that).

I didn't just reinstall it because I couldn't figure it out. That reason is 90% the reason of my CTDs anyways. Now, I have a lot of useless and obsolete shit in my game's folder like SSME and other stuff. I'd rather just clean it out and deleting it altogether would be faster.

In your data folder delete everything but the Skyrim BSA's then have Steam check the local files and it will download the scripts again. BSA's don't get changed and there is no reason the have to download them all again. You can do the same thing with the Skyrim folder too.
Andy14 Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 I appreciate the support but being aggressive doesn't solve anything. I conveyed the impression of aggressiveness? In relation to your person - I do not think so. I have highlighted the ridiculousness of some answers: I think animations, I heard the XPMSE - etc. In view of the error description - you realize a sense - I do not. You have described a problem, relatively clear. And I answered relatively clearly. In view of the information available, which are quite few. I am also sorry, no I did not say, read description of Mod. What do you expect?
mangalo Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Interesting thread, there are a lot of things I didn't know I had to tweak. About Realistic Water & Legendary, aren't the two esps required since Legendary needs Realistic Water as a master ? Also, I understand that disabling xpmse.esp will remove its MCM and the ability to have frostfall quivers for example, right ?
