Right now I'm trying to figure out why if I unzip a block of compressed Record data, change nothing, and then zip it back up I end up with a completely different block of data...

There were two issues: I was writing my zstring and wstring sizes based on the number of characters in the string, and not the number of bytes in the encoded string Bethesda uses maximum compression mode when storing a Record compressed, and I needed to pass a parameter to the zlib call to use that mode

Right now all the code does is copy the original string back into the output stream. It needs to be fixed so that it uses an updated string so long as such a string exists and the record is not marked as 'no translation needed' Then I need to add code that will handle changes made to FACT, ACTI, BOOK, NPC_, INFO, DIAL, QUST, MESG, WOOP, and SCEN Records correctly, because all of those Record types have special fields that need to be handled. 3

He stopped working on the mod for a few weeks when the war started, but since it became clear the conflict would last, he decided that he would keep going. He can't leave the country because the government doesn't allow men to leave. Unfortunately many people in Ukraine are still having to live 'normally' as life goes on in the mid of the war, some people keep working at their jobs, even if that sounds crazy. 2

Writing a parser like this for byte data is about as hard as writing a compiler for a language like ANSI C. The infinite loop bug that I had with quests was due to an arithmetic error that I had made. Once I fixed that I noticed that the size of the quest script data was not being updated correctly, which was due to an oversight of attempting to change data that had not yet been written to the file by modifying the file contents instead of the byte array that I was using to prepare to write to the file. The array out of bounds issue with MESG records resulted from the fact that the part of the Record data block where the option text is stored is the last block in the Record, so I needed to add a check to the MESG and FACT code to prevent the error. Much later, I found another error in the MESG code. If the record has no options, then that element of the data structure is treated as a string and therefore I have to check to ensure it's the proper data type before I try to reference it. After I had gotten the thing to successfully output a file without crashing, I noticed that there was a problem with the parser I had written to import XML data from xTranslator. It was failing to load any string that is stored in the XML by its FormID instead of its EDID. Took me a couple hours to figure out what was wrong, but it turned out that xTranslator stores FIDs with the hexadecimal in uppercase, while my code reads them as lowercase. Since the data structure uses strings as keys in key:value pairs and is case sensitive, any FID value that had an a, b, c, etc was not matching and was therefore discarded. I forced the imported values to lowercase and now my importer does not miss a single string value. Somewhere in all that I added a couple of UI improvements, so that dialog and scene records display associated NPC dialogs in the hierarchical view and those newly displayed UI elements can be interacted with like all the others. With the XML importer finally working I took some time to do some testing to make sure that the editor can actually be used as expected. Importing and exporting the data to JSON seems to work perfectly. There are a few bugs in the UI that I'm still working on. One of the issues involved the fact that my UI framework, TkInter, is not thread safe and will occasionally throw errors that fully CTD as a result. I found an easy fix that reduces the chance of the crash, but I will need to do some major refactoring in the future to fix it entirely. There are rare edge cases that cause the string editor panes to fail to load correctly, and they appear to be related to the above mentioned error where parts of the data structure are incorrectly treated as strings. So I finally got the program to correctly load a mod file, allow me to edit strings, save and load the data, import from XML, and write the modified strings to a mod file that loads in TES5Edit without errors. Then I notice that TES5Edit is throwing some warnings regarding the player dialog records having missing references. I check and none of the player dialog is actually there. Turns out I forgot to change a setting on the DIAL class from 's' to 'n', and as a result the DIAL records are simply not being written to file. Right now it takes over 15 minutes to load the v1221 Thief.esp file and import the saved string data from the JSON file. I doubt that I can do much to optimize it down much, so I will probably create a method of storing all of the internal data as a project file of some kind, which should hopefully allow loading in well under a minute. Exactly how long will depend on how long it takes to rebuild the UI stuff. Other known issues that I will need to fix in the immediate future: When loading the JSON, the program simply replaces the existing data object with the one loaded from file. This works right now because I am always testing with the same file, but it will fail spectacularly if you ever attempt to load a JSON created from a different version of the mod. For some reason, you occasionally have to close all of the editor windows and return to the main window to continue editing, because each window that gets opened is added to the process stack permanently - even if you close it - and you will eventually become unable to open new ones. Closing the current top-level edit window appears to clear the stack. In some of the edit windows, the translation status dropdown always defaults to a value, regardless of the actual status of the string being edited. Ok , it's been 16 minutes since I wrote that it takes 15 minutes to load this shit, let's see if I fixed the DIAL error... There are a few big things that I need to add, mostly to the UI, before this thing will qualify as a real tool. For instance, right now it only allows translation from Russian to English. I will clearly need to add some options to change those to other languages. ...And it's fixed! Loads in TES5Edit with no errors and no warnings. Stand by for me to make the github repo public. 2
