(Discussion) Elves and Skyrim

Okay so I've been on this site for a while, and enjoyed the Skyrim counterpart thread for quite some time, but one thing always stood out to me; a huge percentage of the elves in it and other threads, seemed to be more LOTR style elf (human, but with pointy ears) I also noticed that most elven mods try and humanize them, by giving them human eyes, skin tone, and such. I'm not saying I don't like or appreciate the mods per se, my Dark Elf would look appalling with base textures; but I was kind of fond of the fact that they seemed alien, and different. So I just wanted to see if there was anybody else that enjoyed the more base-game elves, and mods that didn't stray from base-game elves. To keep this thread impartial, I suppose if people wish to explain why elves that look like humans with pointy ears are the superior elf, then you can, but, at least give your reasons for preferring them and not just spout out 'their better!' your'e an idiot for thinking different. etc' okay? ;)

I see where you're coming from but I just think the vanilla elf races were particularly unattractive this time around, I remember being disappointed way back when I played the first time as I wanted to play a sneaky archer mage and dark elves are best suited to that, but the face looked so bad. That said I think CBBE does a good job of improving the look while remaining lore-friendly and retaining the distinct features.

No doubt that elves in skyrim aren't particularly attractive, but that's because you're a human. If you lived as a dark elf you might find dark elves attractive. Besides that, I think it would be more of the fact that they ARE different that makes them unique. Of course this is just my opinion, but LOTR style elves always bored me; if the only difference between mer and man is ears, and the elf is wearing a hood... how the fuck would anyone know they hate them because they're different??? :D That doesn't count for Dunmer of course, but you get my point.

I like my elves being slightly "different" than the other races so i tend to keep them with most of their features while i tone down some of them.

As for attractive or not, i dont find the vanilla male elves very attractive, they look a bit too alien for that.

As a example this would be my wood elf, not very vanilla. But not human either.  :P

I like Elves looking different than humans, but not too different.

Saying that Skyrim did a HORRIBLE job making any NPC attractive, and elves are the worst of the bunch. So I understand making them more humanoid to make them not look as bad. When done right, they should look a little different but also attractive in their own right.

When I make elves I tend to make them lithe, while humans I make more stocky but busty. Face wise, is tricky because normally people make humans with faces to their ideal women, so if you want elves to be different you have to diverge off that ideal.

I like the angular faces, when done right they can be good looking enough for me to tolerate them. Base Skyrim characters looks like gritty and down-to-earth and shit all around so the elves aren't extra bad. While I do like rounder human faces the best, I don't make my elves humans with mutated ears. I could tolerate the Bijin and EEO level of humanization, but mods like Tauriel (well yeah, "from the hobbit") and Tania and Tamaria just seems human to me. Same with Argonians, I would never use the breast mod for a reptilian race. Just doesn't fit with my view.

That's my own balance of lore and sexiness in regards to racial traits. I have a set image of human and elven and beast character traits that I stick to, and anything claiming to be the other race just seems not right.

Also, note that Skyrim elves have very slanted eyes when compared to humans. Who here like/dislike that?

I prefer my elves to be in line with what I remember as a kid playing D&D back in the 70's. Looking at the earlier tes elves it seems thats what they had in mind but graphics being what they were back then we were delivered some real nasty looking shit instead. So to me elves that look a bit more human are just a correction

More or less the kinds of characters I was implying. Their well done, but always felt like people refused to leave their comfort zone. That being said, if they wanted, wouldn't playing a breton and just making their ears pointier be pretty much what their going for? I don't know, I was just never a fan of LOTR and the like so I guess I just don't get the allure of it :-/ Personally don't really like playing elves at all tbh. I know they have the right to enjoy their game the way they wish though, I just don't get the allure of those kinds of elves. Glad to see that not everyone wants their elves to look like Tauriel though

Nobody liked what Bethesda did with Elves in Skyrim, they don't look like anything you'd imagine when you hear the word "Elf". Rather, they look like a Romulan and a Nausicaan somehow managed to produce living offspring togeather, they just look awful.

I've seen people argue what Elves should ideally look like before, everything from Tolkien's pretty Elves to the emaciated little tricksters of European folklore gets argued, but i have never once seen anyone say "an Elf should look like a Nausicaan bedded a Romulan and they had a kid". No, this is nobody's idea of an Elf

That's why people mod them, and then it's both the easiest and the most visually pleasing to just turn them into pointy eared Nords, Tolkien Elves basically, and so that's what people usually do.

Well either that, or they refuse to have anything to do with them, which is why hardly any mods support the elven races of this game. So many people took just one look at them, declared them DOA, and never bothered with them.

I've modded mine too, though i've not gone to the extreme of replacing them with Nord faces. I'm using Elven faces, the big almond shaped eyes, the emaciated triangular face shape, all of that, but the textures Bethesda stuck us with? Nope, not having any of that.

I like that elves look different to humans, but i don't like my elves to be so amazingly ugly that even a Hagraven would feel put off by them.

You're right, base elves look like sin, but, just writing them off doesn't do them justice. There are mods out there that make the elves beautiful without changing them completely, and I'm sure somebody could post a detailed list if they wanted to. It's a shame that modders took so little interest in the non-human races in this game though.

Edit: I think it's about time I recreate my elf Ariyha, and show that Tolkien elves aren't the only way to be beautiful ;)

I still use vanilla dark elf with red eyes. :DD

I think they look better being different. But that's just ne

that is long been no wood elf more, it lacks the distinctive facial features!

but many use the asia style, where everything looks like small "Dolly" out.

I prefer elves to look different than humans and choose mods that improve their appearance without going too far from the original. I really don't like "humanized" elves or beast races. Especially beast races with human faces. They're just straight out ugly in my opinion. I still find vanilla Dunmer to be more attractive than Nords. Vanilla humans are average at best.

Edit: Dark Elves look evil. This automatically gives them +10 to sexiness.

According to whom?

Those "destinctive facial features" are completely different to how Bosmer looked in Oblivion, and they looked completely different in Morrowind, and different still in Daggerfall and Arena.

It's not really "destinctive" when they keep changing it with every game..

That's right, but that is for the most part, to the graphics development, you can Oblivion "not with" Skyrim compare.

one could also Skyrim not with The Witcher 3 compare.

it goes only and alone to the original features of the elves races, the through Asian mods maimed will! ;)

My existence refutes this claim.

No Jexsam, it really doesen't.

This is a picture of two of your Elven char's (the two at the top) compared to what a Dunmer actually looks like when the game is not modded (at the bottom):

Your Elves look nothing like that Nausicaan/Romulan halfbreed at the bottom, they look waaaaay prettier than that!

You modded your Elves prettier dude, so no, i'm not buying it, i'm not buying that you are 100% satiesfied with what Bethesda gave you, else, you woulden't have changed it.

Again, modded!

If that was vanilla, you would see massive cranial potrusions, extremely deep wrinkles all over the face, the noses would be wider, the eyes farther apart, and the chins much longer.

Those do not look like vanilla Skyrim elves, they are too pretty for that.

EDIT:

I think some of you guys have been playing with your games modded for so long you've actually forgotten how bad the Elves of this game was designed to look. So here it is ladies and gents, these are the vanilla Skyrim face presets provided for the Dunmer:

If you're going to defend what Bethesda made, then THAT is what you need to be defending. THAT is what they were designed to look like.

even that is right, it are modded Elves, but the original form is only lightly changed. :)

I really like how the elves look in vanilla Skyrim. Of course I have them modded because I want them to look even better, but vanilla elves are perfectly fine for me. I love how they're not humans with pointy ears. They actually look kinda "alien".
