I hear that. Since I grew up in the '80s and '90s I still tend to think of 2000s as the "new".

It is a distinguishing characteristic of the typical military person, one who is not a fortunate son.  As for paying taxes, we see the rich avoiding taxes by using legal means (accountants, special investments, etc.) that are denied (due to expense) to those who are not fortunate sons.

I fully understand what the lyric is about and have done for decades - hence my comment about social justice.
