Do You Know Who I Am?

How about adding some derision for some people:

Player: Don't you know who I am? I am Dragonborn.

NPC: Ah! And I am Tiber Septim... Now get out of my sights before I call the guards.

There are a few NPCs who respond in that kind of way... currently Maven Black Briar and Urag just don't care. A couple other NPCs don't care that you're Dragonborn but do care that you've defeated Alduin. And some NPCs care about both, but aren't intimidated, just respectful.

In general, I tried to match responses to personality types...

Strutting bullies turn into cowering, simpering sycophants upon learning that there's someone tougher than them out there.

Megalomaniacs don't believe that your power could exceed theirs, and thus ignore you (or may respond with hostility).

Ignorant individuals respond with a mixture of fear and respect, often passing you a bribe, of sorts.

Tough but perceptive people will recognize your accomplishments without groveling.

I can't say I've always succeeded (I think that often I've overdone the "fear the dragonborn" aspect), but I have tried.

EDIT: I do need to add some truly unperceptive people who just really don't believe you.

Problem is, vanilla dialog often adds comments that would conflict... You tell someone you're the Dragonborn, they laugh you off, and then turn right around and say "I can't believe it, you killed Alduin and saved us all, you truly are a hero."

Well, at least for the Nords it makes sense to overreact with reverence. Last Dragonborn they heard of was Tiber M.....kin Septim...

He might aswell be Chuck Norris personified >.>

"I've never heard of Tiber Septim killing any dragons."

"There weren't any dragons then, idiot. They're just coming back now for the first time in... forever."

This has always bugged me a bit... the guards after you kill mulrmirnur (or whatever the hell that dragon's name is) say these lines, and it's true, by the time of Tiber Septim, all the Dragons had died (except for Paarthurnax and one or two others, IIRC). But then later on the Blades talk about how they killed dragons alongside Tiber Septim.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something, or misreading the timeline...

...I just realized that I'm a real geek.

A slightly different tack here and don't want to bloat the mod but it's sort of related...

There's Haming, living with the old man in the shack (Froki?). He mentions his parents, they were at Helgen, he will tell you they were killed there and then...Nothing. Why not? I can talk to all of those other spankers who were at Helgen and I don't like any of them.

"I know you live out here with this mad old man and don't know who I am but I was at Helgen too.

I'm sorry about your parents, it was horrible (cry, hug)...

See, there's this dragon I killed call Alduin, he destroyed Helgen to try and kill me first, so it's kind of my fault. But not really coz of fate and godz an' shit"

There's scope there for a whole closure/sympathy/two-way therapy conversation and fetch quest to Helgen for his favourite teddy bear/wooden sword mod with him but just a bit of recognition would be nice. Maybe just the first bit.

And while we're on being nice to people, how about the newly-homeless farmers? Rather than just hearing that she couldn't watch and giving five gold you could tell them you're going to kick all of the Dragon arses, and here's five gold, or more gold for the charity blessing.

For people who really don't believe you... how about the various drunks in the game ("My favorite drinking buddy!")...

Good suggestion. I think I can just modify the "all drunks" quest, but I'm not fond of that idea... that's what I did with brawlers, but not all drunks are alike just as not all brawlers are alike, so having a generic dykwia dialog doesn't sit quite right with me.

Problem is, with brawlers (and also drunks, I believe), this is handled by a single quest with dialog for different people, so I can't easily make individual responses (actually, that's not true now that I think about it... hmm... I'll go take another look).

Okay, I guess I'll just make the mod modular. I was just thinking that many people are close to their maximum mod limit... but hell, IF someone is close to that limit and IF they want to use this mod and IF they have Dragonborn, which is a lot of ifs already, then it's pretty easy to MERGE the mods together.
p.s. Does anyone know how to add bash tags to make mods mergeable? This is a stupid question, isn't it?

Some problems I'm having currently (or things I'd like to do):
  • I split Calcelmo's dialog, but the original voice files should still work (for Calcelmo, his "I'm sorry" comes right after his "You idiot" comments, and that fit in quite well just inserting a dykwia line between the two, so I didn't actually change any dialog at all, just cut it up and changed the order). I just need to strip out the xwm file and trigger it properly. Problem is, I can find the FUZ files, but not the XWM files, so I can't tell the CK to look for a particular sound file! And, unlike some things in the CK where you can just type in the location of the relevant file (like when you're messing with meshes on an item), you can't just copy/paste or type in the location of the sound file. It won't let you. Bleargh.
  • Enthir has a couple different spots that would really work with dykwia dialog... but I'm having serious trouble unraveling his quest(s). They're a convoluted mass of strange links, topics where branches should be, and what looks like references to quests that don't exist (though I'm sure I'm just imagining that bit... Bethesda would never do something like that, would they?)
  • Vilkas is another one who would benefit from dykwia, but again, having issues with that. Specifically, the one place he really needs dykwia is in a scene with him and Kodlak, and I don't know how to do scenes... I'll want to strip out his "I've never heard of this person" line, cut the scene in half, add a forcegreet to Vilkas and make him say something similar to the player, to which the player can respond with dykwia, then stitch it back in again to the remnant of the original scene... and ONLY have this happen if you're the Dragonborn, somehow adding in an if check (though I'm sure scenes allow you to do that) for questcompleted... then duplicate the effort to check if you've defeated Alduin! Honestly, it just seems like too much work...
  • I wanted to do one for Vantus Loreius, but I had a problem... can't remember what it was right now, but IIRC it was pretty easy and simple to fix. I'll revisit.
  • I'm having trouble editing Neloth's dialogue... three issues. First, Skyrim likes to put all dialog branches in the same spot when you edit the dialog views, meaning you have to move them around until you can see them all, then carefully sort them so you can get the logical progression of the tree, turning a simple task into a game of find the slipper. I'd say he's actually WORSE then Enthir. Second, the CK seems to want to bug out about not finding script fragments, even when I've not done anything with the scripts, just opened the quest and looked at it. Third, there's a lot of freaking Neloth speech to work through. So imma turn this over to y'all, because I'm a lazy person and don't want to do any, you know, actual work... is there any spot in particular you can point to that seems like Neloth's speech would benefit from a dykwia line? He's an arrogant ass, but unlike many, he's earned his arrogance, at least somewhat, so his response to "Do you know who I am?" is invariably going to be something either snarky or dismissive.
  • I need to figure out how to make the Graybeards shout at the player without initiating combat, then forcegreet the player for a follow-up.
  • There is a host of NPCs that are still on my to-do list: Dremora from Conjuration Ritual spell, Bendt, Yamarz, Malborn, Farengar, Froki, Skald, Siddgeir, Sibbi, Taarie, Endarie, Wuunferth, Odfel, Markarth guards, and I need to look through the entire population of Riften and go through the whole Thieves Guild, particularly Mercer.
  • Add sexlab content (maybe, possibly), and then take a look at Dawnguard NPCs too. And then duplicate all of the dykwia "I'm the Dragonborn" points for "I killed Alduin" points, making sure that the player and NPC dialog doesn't just repeat for both, because that's a cop-out.
  • Repeat every single endeavor, duplicating all work, for each major faction you become head of (Companions, College of Winterhold, Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, Stormcloaks, Imperials, etc)...

And my worst problem is that when I look at this list of things to do, I get discouraged and don't want to do any of it, and I go play XCOM for a while.
Which is why, for now, I'm mostly just taking people requests... adding one, or a dozen, NPCs at a time is easier on me than going through this damn list again.

Good idea...

But definitely not this mod. ;)

But it is a good idea. There are plenty of people in Skyrim who are undone or overcome by circumstances, and could use a little sympathy.

I'll put it on my to-do list.

Next up, however, after Do You Know Who I Am is "finished" (for a given value of finished), will be "What Took You So Long" if I can figure out how to do it right. I think I've got a handle on the basics, but I need to actually test it to see.

v9, aka the "hopefully these hacks actually work" version, is up...

Farengar will be a bit more respectful to the Dragonborn in his general dialogue now.

Malborn will be a bit impressed that you're the Dragonborn. In order to do this, I had to break the invisible continue link, so now he won't just launch directly from "I hope she knows what she's doing" into "here's what you have to do"... you'll have to respond appropriately to his words before he'll continue. Bit of a hack, I know, and I'm not happy with it, but I don't see any other way to do it.

The Riften gate guard who requires the "visitor's tax" is easily intimidated by the Dragonborn.

The other gate guards are similarly impressed by your status. Note that in order to do this properly, I had to edit yet another vanilla script... it was either that or the guards would just disappear into thin air when done speaking. NB: This means the guards on the other gates are now permanent, I think... I'll look into adding a timer and disabling them later.

The Dremora you summon during the Conjuration Ritual quest will be impressed. Unfortunately, I had to add the stage change at the END of the damn topic rather than triggering at the BEGINNING, and I've had bad luck doing that in the past (stages not updating properly), so... fingers crossed.

Odfel of Shor's Stone is a hard one to do, because his arrogant comment about being tougher than you is a hello comment. I can either make him perceptive enough to notice the Dragonborn and have a different thing to say, or... what I did was just add a check to his dialog so he doesn't say that line if you're Dragonborn. If it doesn't work well, let me know, and I'll change him around like I did Nelkir and Dagny etc.

If you've mistakenly imprisoned Wuunfurth during Blood on the Ice, and you speak to him in jail, you can tell him you're Dragonborn... but he really won't care. I just added the topic directly rather than editing shared info, but it should work normally... I think.

Cymri had a good idea here, and I wanted to add in lines the guards would say if you tried to intimidate them, but holy hell, that's complicated:

post-462261-0-09193100-1426575350_thumb.jpg

I've looked at this quest before, but I forgot it was that bad. I don't want to even tangle with that. When a dialogue tree takes close to five seconds to even load up, you know it's going to be a wicked bitch to edit. Sorry, Cymri, my sanity is precious to me. ;)

skyrimll: That was a good idea about adding dialogue to drunks, but I can't find a good spot to put it. The general quest all drunks have, you have to initiate by asking if they want a drink... so why would you get huffy when they say yes? The only alternative is to create new quests for each individual drunk and have them approach you for a drink instead of the other way around, and while that's certainly doable I'm lazy and don't want to make the effort. :)

Though if you can think of a good reason for the player to get offended, I'll certainly add it.

I'm not playing Skyrim anymore atm so I won't be helpful to you sorry, but the day I play it again I'll make sure that this is one of the first mods I install! Thanks for making Skyrim a more credible place where your actions matter at least a bit.

It's always sad to see someone not play Skyrim. You could be suffering alongside the rest of us! But nooooo... you have to go have a life. Fine. Be that way.  :D  :D  :D

Thanks for the kind words. Here's hoping the mod actually works. ;)

Isn't it fun how what seemed a simple concept that you thought was basically done has spiralled into a never-ending chasm of work? Ah, modding...

I don't see the problem with the guards being at that entrance permanently, unless they go through the shakedown every tune the player approaches.

And I don't want to spoil the party but Bethesda is rumored to be announcing the next TES game in June.... so we have maybe a year or two at most before most of us get sucked into a new black hole of a game.

That's what I'm worried about. I haven't actually tested my own mod yet (yep, lazy lazy lazy) but I believe the guards have a forcegreet...

I'll get on it. I swear! ;)

Ooh. Well, that's good. If people stop making mods and significant upgrades to current mods, maybe I'll actually be able to play the game from start to finish for once.

Deep down we're all gluttons for punishment...

Knowing Bethesda, I doubt the game engine will differ that much from the previous. Personally I just hope to get more Thalmor to acquaint with my +10 Stealth Arrows of Altmerslaying...

v10 is up.

Bolgeir Bearclaw will be a bit more respectful.

Bendt will be a bit more respectful.

The East Empire Company dockmaster (thieves guild questline) will be a bit more respectful.

Taarie may be a bit more respectful in her hello dialog if you've saved the world. Honestly, although she (and her sister) have that smarmy high-elf arrogance, there's not much room to insert dykwia there. Actual dialog trees, on the other hand, I'm going to revisit... there are some good spots to put dykwia in there.

Taarie will also respond if you tell her you're Dragonborn (when she comments on your clothes), but she doesn't much care.

Kayd will be a bit in awe of the Dragonborn.

Same here, there just aren't enough High Elves around to satisfy the Fucking Awesome Bow.

I must look into enchanted arrows, didn't realise that was still a thing like it was in Oblivion.

Extra thumbs up for this mod for the title image, that's very good.

And as far as new TES goes, there's still stuff appearing for Oblivion, and FO3, this isn't over for a long time yet.

And an announcement isn't a release...

Read as: [Roleplay] xD Though I do not doubt it is possible to make such things happen...

I seem to remember seeing a mod recently that added enchanted arrows. Can't remember if it was here or on Nexus, though...

I mean, I know about this one, but I thought there was a new mod that added the ability to enchant normal arrows. Might have imagined it.

I think you should add this feature to the stormcloak/imperial joining quest. They are always like: "you saved the world 3 times but you have to prove yourself buddy".

Excellent idea!

How about .... 'adoring fan' level of 'in awe'? :)

Player: Do you know who I am? I am Dragonborn.

NPC: Woa... Really?!... OMG! Dude.. you totally rule! Can you tattoo your name on my chest? Can I carry your armor? feed your horse?

That's definitely a good one for a follower. :)

I can see changing all the text the follower has to that...

Erm, I might just make a follower mod some time.

Do you have anyone specific in mind?

Horomir, the bumbling follower from the Interesting NPCs mod comes to mind.  But then he'd be constantly dropping your armor and accidentally poisoning your horse.

Sorry, but I can't edit an NPC from another mod unless I edit that mod directly.

EDIT: At least, I don't think so...

I could create a handler quest to deal with all interactions (like how Sexlab Solutions does) but that wouldn't do it, because then dykwia would become dependent on those mods...

Or there might be a way to do a soft dependency, but I don't think so off the top of my head, but I'm a scripting newb, so maybe?

Alternately, I could download Interesting NPCs and make a sub mod for it, but honestly? A 2gb file would take my poor, slow connection several hours to download, and I just don't want to try that long, hoping against hope that somehow the connection won't get interrupted, or the power won't go out, or the download won't stall (happens to me a lot downloading large-ish files from Nexus) and have to be restarted, or nobody else wants to use the internet in the house (the router has to be turned off and then back on again for one of the computers to hook up properly)... not to mention deliberately staying away from doing anything else (like, you know, anything) or I might trigger one of the above scenarios or, at the absolute best, slow the download speed to a crawl... argh.

Sorry... that turned into a rant there, didn't it?

tl;dr... no.
