Morgoth Bauglir Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Apparently the studio developing the new fantastic four movie has hinted at the possibility of casting a woman in the role of Dr Doom . As a long time fan of the comic books , I say that's sacrilegious. How do you guys and gals feel about that ?
gvman3670 Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 Poppycock I say! I just wanted an excuse to use "poppycock" today. Wasn't DD already a man in an earlier episode? How's that gonna' work?
Captain Cobra Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 LOOK AT HOW PROGRESSIVE WE ARE CASTING DR DOOM AS A GRILL GIBE MONE PLZ
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 And this is why I can never trust anything Hollywood does. They just make changes and give the middle finger to the source material. Another example is the Akira live action that they have been wanting to do; they want to make it all inclusive with all races when the source material is Japanese and it makes no fucking sense for them to do so outside of hoping some black people will come see it because black people are in it. Fuck that, fuck them and fuck everything. This is part of the reason why movies are dying and I hope it all fucking collapses.

A good example is the localization of the MMO Tera in the United States compared to Korean/Japanese version? I think. A more recent one in which I hope to god they don't screw up is the Movie "Edge of Tomorrow" with Tom Cruise which is based on a Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill. I've had enough experience and exposure to foreign cultures, especially American, Mexican, and Japanese cultures that it doesn't bother me anymore. I appreciate quality when I see it. Language barriers don't affect me as much anymore ever since I started watching Anime. But in terms of Hollywood trying to cater more to the "general public" by change the source material to reflect more modern day terms is a hit and miss. I believe the Movie "Ender's game" in the original book the main character was like six years old i believe (from what I hear) and in the Movie he's a teenager.
BAB PEEG Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 I remember when they made the American version of the girl with the dragon tattoo movies, they were way off.
Guest xthejester Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 I remember when they made the American version of the girl with the dragon tattoo movies, they were way off. I don't see where they messed up. I watched the original trilogy. The David Fincher version wasn't too much different. Although the girl they got to play Lizbeth in the Fincher version was nowhere as good as Noomi. Mmmm...love me some Noomi.
Lexi SubZero Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Well, I had no idea a 3rd F4 is in the making so I checked that out...mainly the cast...Sue Storm - Kate Mara...meh, mainly TV series actress..but could be goodReed Richards - Miles Teller...who the hell is this guy?Ben Grim - Jamie Bell...*facedesk* really..like SERIOUSLY? ..this pipsqueak saying "it's clobberin' time!"...BWAHAHAHAHA!! ..and now comes the part when I lost it completely..Johnny Storm - Michael B. Jordan ...I'm no racist but...what the actual fuck? Just what are the creators smokin'..crack, meth...? Last I checked, Human Torch is and ever was caucasian..in all possible marvel universes/realities...and on top of that Dr. Doom is a chick...I'll just pretend this movie never existed...
jxm Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 As Doom always wears a mask who actually cares? Can't be worse than: C. Bale playing a rich dude in rubber suit fighting against wannabe-supervillain-terrorists in Chicago-like-city (for some reasons people believe that was a Batman-Trilogy, don't know why) or Amazing-Hipster-Spiderman-the-unsympathetic-idiot-that-never-wears-his-mask-and-fights-boring-lizardvillain

Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 May as well make the next Batman an Asian guy. Or a black Superman. How about a female Daredevil? Hell, make Punisher into a flat black woman who is shooting bigots because she's a lesbian while you're at it. Doctor Strange? Lady. Galactus? Lad- oh wait, he had a daughter so now we can just have Galacta. Cyborg? Make him whit- oh wait, THAT WOULD BE RACIST.
Kpnut Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 Cyborg? Make him whit- oh wait, THAT WOULD BE RACIST. Well they can't bitch about it if you make Cyborg white with a black Superman.
Jexsam Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Is there any narrative reason Dr. Doom can't be a woman? Do you mean to imply that the character of Dr. Doom, his motivations, his actions, his desires and so forth, can't be portrayed by a woman just as well? Or Spiderman - is there any reason a black guy can't be a quiet nerd who lives with his aunt? Arbitrarily changing a character's race/gender is pretty dumb, IMO, but beyond simply staying true to the source material, there's not much reason they can't.

In case of Ultimate Spiderman..already done. Peter is dead and Miles Morales took his place.
Captain Cobra Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Why his suit gotta be black when white boy spidy's wus red? Das raycis!
CoxcombCornking Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Vile heresy spread by witches and sailors !
LaEspada Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Vile heresy spread by witches and sailors ! Aren't sailors some of the most superstitious people around? historically speaking of course. I would imagine they would be the ones with the pitchforks, not the other way around.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 If you're going to change the race or gender of an already established character, then just make a new character instead. People go into adaptations expecting them to be somewhat faithful to the source, not to see things changed just because >bullshit Hollywood reason that's likely to get a wider audience at the expense of fans<. It just leads to pissing off the fans who are willing to spend money to see what you made. They would be much more open to, say, a new female villain than they would an already established villain who was changed into a woman for no real fucking reason other than to hope it would bring in a few more asses to fill seats. That kind of stuff can kill a movie.
CoxcombCornking Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 The mishandling of some of these Marvel properties just have to run their contractual course, until the film rights are finally handed over to the new owner. Expect another Craptastic Four, and one more Spidermangle. After these, Disney will do their own form of "magic". Love them or hate them, Disney has done well for the other Marvel stuff. They just don't seem to care about paying proper respect to any of the actual original creators. But then, neither did the former owners. Does anyone else foresee a line of "Marvel Princess" Barbies in the future.?
BAB PEEG Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 If Powergirl was Powerboy would it be a shota with a big dick?
jacques00 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 While it may be true that a small number of people might have gotten the "bright" idea that changing race/gender/sexuality/etc. of an already established cast of characters of an established universe within an established source material, and pitched said idea to a production studio, remember that someone had to greenlight the project. The people involved in greenlighting it had to know it would make money (otherwise they wouldn't have made it)--they would care less for the source material. These choices were made for a reason, and I don't think it's for any artistic or "fair and balanced" social-rights crusade, but more of a money-making publicity stunt. If they can't sell it based on the source material alone (face it, they are desperate), they'll just conjure something people will talk about and that will sell more tickets than those invested in the title alone. "All publicity is good publicity"--it's a marketing tactic that if you set on a controversy (for better or worse), it'll sell. What ultimately speaks are the box office numbers, so vote with your dollars and all that jazz.
canderes Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I am waiting for Inhumans/Guardians of the Galaxy. I don't care about the avengers-not that it wasn't good-the offworld stories are more interesting than x-men/avengers stuff, and Thor has barely touched any cosmic level lore. The other marvel franchises will inevitably be trashed as they keep trying to set the bar higher and it seems like DC doesn't give enough of care to make a good movie-Nolan is gone and we have yet to see a Justice League movie. I want anihilators/eternals/beyonder/celestials (F4 dropped the ball on Galactus) stuff in a marvel movie, and darkseid/apokolips/new genesis scary godlike villains-not common criminals/mortals like in every movie. We have yet to see a serial killer in the marvel universe-DC seems to have their Arkham roster down, but Marvel has yet to show anyone from Ravencroft. I have a feeling that mysterio will be the next super villain after Jamie Foxx finishes the spiderman music video (I can't take that guy seriously without thinking about Overnight Celebrity, Slow Jamz or Gold Digger-I just picture him turning the movie into a musical episode).
