Guest xthejester Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 DC needs to get their shit together. Marvel's Avengers films have done well because.... 1.) For the most part, their character's stand-alone moves were good. 2.) The casting has mostly been consistent. (Hulk not withstanding) 3.) They have an overall plan for what's coming out and when. They seem to have a broad narrative planned wherein the individual films are equivalent to episodes or chapters of the greater story. Here's what the DC movies would need. You'll need one or two good Batman movies, one or two good Superman movies...At least one good Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Flash movie each. Lock actors into contracts keeping them committed to reprising their roles for at least three films. Get writers and directors who actually give a damn about the source material, and some sort of over-watch production team to plan and track the progression of the cinematic narrative. Back to the main topic of this thread now... This new FF flick sounds to me like its going to be another abortion. Not because of the questionable casting choices. That's merely a symptom of the larger disease. The larger disease is the fact that the producers don't seem to think the original source material is up to snuff. So they're trying to "fix" it. The problem is, they're wrong. The FF series has worked, and worked well for decades as is. Trying to recreate it by changing fundamental aspects of the characters is only going to end up biting them in their asses. By trying to "tweak" the characters so they're more in line with the modernity of our time is the problem. If anything, they ought to focus on the fact that the FF are an anachronism. Something out of place for our time. Something the people behind Captain America hit right on the head. The first movie is a period piece and any subsequent films will always have the "man out of time" element in them. Which is really the only way a character like Cap can remain relevant and compelling. Making Johnny Storm a black guy doesn't really bother me. But making Doom a woman kinda does. There are plenty of decent female villains. You don't need to swap the genders of the classics to be modern. A huge aspect of the dynamic between Viktor VonDoom and Reed Richards is their rivalry. A gender swap for Doom will turn that dynamic on its head, and not in a good way. TL;DR...the filmmakers need to stop trying to fix something that isn't broken.
Kpnut Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Actually a black Johnny Storm wouldn't be a good idea if they leave his sister white.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 But then they could make him adopted and add sexual tension, just like a female Doom would add yet more sexual tension. OH GOD PLEASE TELL ME I'M GOING TO BE WRONG ABOUT THAT LAST PART. I don't want to think about Doctor Doom and Mister Fantastic wanting to fuck, Or have fucked. Or one wants to hate fuck the other.
Kpnut Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Actually I can't even imagine Johnny Storm and/or Susan Richards being black full stop.
BAB PEEG Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Do you want the mask on or off? "Off please." TOO BAD.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Oh Sealab 2021, is there anything we can't quote you for?
jh2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 I remember when they made the American version of the girl with the dragon tattoo movies, they were way off. At least the American version got the tattoo right.
CoxcombCornking Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Didn't we already get a beige skinned, brown-eyed, brunette girl converted into the fair skinned, blue-eyed, blonde Sue Storm ? They spent more money on that particular makeup effect, than they did on a decent script.
jacques00 Posted March 1, 2014 Posted March 1, 2014 Again, I honestly don't think these changes are some kind of move to be "more creative" with a franchise, or "be more inclusive" in a over-used, political correctness-excused society. The studio (20th Century Fox) is only releasing the project to help ensure that they continue to own the rights to the franchise and make more money off of it. If Fox can't make this reboot work, they're probably better off selling the property to Disney or back to Marvel. Trying to make a grown-up, gritty, non-comedic F4 doesn't seem very fitting for a series long told to have characters with bright costumes and family-oriented relationships (spouse tension, sibling rivalries, etc.). If the studio wanted to continue wasting money, it probably wouldn't make a difference if they released the continuation of the second movie--at least we'll have some closure to the Galactus cliffhanger and the characters would be more in-theme with their source material. Though I'll be curious to see how the new F4 plays out (for better or worse). And if Fox does fail and sends the property back to Marvel, maybe there'll be a chance to set up a plot with the Inhumans involved for a mash-up movie. At least that will help bolster popularity of a franchise and add more variety to a cast without having to force change race/gender/sexuality/etc. to fit a desired token template.
