Oblivion Remastered - What's Good, What's Bad

So I've got about 4 1/2 hours into the Remaster now, and have a few thoughts...   It's been several years since I last played Oblivion though, so if I remember something incorrectly, please forgive me.

THE GOOD:

1 - Encumbrance - if I remember right, if you went just 1 pound over your limit, your character froze and couldn't move at all until you dropped something.  No more.  If you're overweight now you just move really slow

2 - Archery - I remember now liking it before, not sure why anymore.  Remastered archery feels more like Skyrim archery

3 - Leveling - say goodbye to "efficient leveling" where you had to get a precise amount of level-ups in certain skills per level to avoid becoming underpowered later in the game and get all attributes (?) like Strength and Endurance to 100.  Now on level-up you get 12 "virtue points" to spend across 3 attributes as you see fit on a 1:1 basis, except Luck, which is 4:1.  No more having to sell a stack of arrows one arrow at a time to boost your Mercantile skill to raise Personality.

4 - The game does look good, and so far I haven't seen any of the slowdowns or stutters that some have reported.  That holds true for the sewers, a fort, the countryside, a few interiors and inside the Imperial City.

THE BAD:

1 - Some of the new voice acting they added doesn't quite fit.  It seems at least a couple of characters I ran into seemed to have lines both from the original voice acting and the new.  Nothing wrong with the new lines by themselves, but each character ought to be consistent.

2 - At US $49.99/$59.99 I think it's a little overpriced.  Maybe ought to be about $10 less.  It's obvious the amount of new work that went into it, and that's worth something, but it's still an "old" new game, not a "new" new game.

TLDR - 4 1/2 hours in, I like it and I'm having fun.  Just wish I had Vilja with me.

Shit, I'd even pay for Emma to update Vilja and put it on Creation Club (yes I know, no official mod support.........Yet)

Old plugins do work in the new game.  In fact the way to create mods for the remaster is to use the Construction Set and / or TES4Edit on the original game, then copy your plugin over.  The plugins go in Oblivion Remastered\OblivionRemastered\Content\Dev\ObvData\Data and there's a plugins.txt file in that folder that you use to control which plugins get loaded.

Obviously some mods won't work; meshes and textures are different etc.  But you can do a lot with the assets that are already in the game.

One gripe I have right now is I can't seem to get rid of the beard on my female Khajiit.

Sort of related to that is I kind of feel like the female heads lean towards the masculine side of things.

Absolutely not. This game shouldn't be more than 20 bucks. Its an old game with some minor QoL additions and a new coat of paint. That people are just throwing them an easy 50 bucks for yet another remake/remaster is just sad.

The sprint animation is weird. I feel like I am using ghostface when I sprint. So I hope the animation modders get to making more feminine movements.

That and I can't wait for some peeps to come along and bring boobie mods back as well as some cutesy stuffs too!!!

I wish I stuck around for the more modern games so I'd probably be one of the people trying to figure out how to edit the meshes.

Levelscaling is still shit. It was easily one of the most criticized part of the original, and as far as I can tell it's completely untouched.

I get they want to preserve the original game, but seriously.

Well, they did say that the quirkiness of Oblivion is still there in their press releases so I wouldn't be surprised at that.

If anything, this is literally Oblivion but given a graphical update.

I'm level 15 now and bandits are showing up with dwarven and elven gear. I took on 3 bandits without much trouble on the adept difficulty setting.

Before starting the fight I summoned a Skeleton Guardian, applied a 10% damage reduction buff, and took a magica and healing potion that each last 30 seconds. Then started hitting them with fire touch spells while my Skeleton dished out some damage. Had to use 3 magic and 3 health potions after that, but I killed them. I have like 50 potions... so spamming them isn't a problem.

You could always just lower the difficulty setting.

How close are we to boobies in the remaster?  I don't even really care about animations, I just want to see tits sometimes.

There's a paid-walled mod already showing boobies. ATM, it might take some time before we can get the boobies out as UE isn't that hard to mod up.

We need mods just to have female armor. And we need mods to make heavy armor cuirasses, robes and chlothesthat uses both the upper and lower body item slots not hide tails of the beast races.

Graphics-wise, I would say the scenery is a nice upgrade. The NPCs however need a ton of work. They look like absolute garbage; the head and body meshes from the original game seem to have been textured over with 'new paint', and still suffer occasionally with textures on limbs and body disappearing. If this is such a remaster, then attention to mesh 'enhancement' of creatures and NPCs should have also been implemented. That means skeletons, too. Reminds me of the ape-like running animation while holding a bow in Skyrim before I modded that out.

I do have plenty of issues on the basis of using the bloated mess that is UE5. 115 Gigs for this install?!?! I had to actually mod the game's Engine config files manually before I could even follow the Emperor and guards from my cell without crashing to desktop (that was before I found a mod to handle the settings for me). And yes; it does run okay with a 4 core CPU on medium/low settings using an i7-6700k. Just can't wait for my PC case parts to show up so I can build my new system.

so far what ive learned of WHY Oblivion remastered keeps crashing for some people is the fact XMP makes the game unstable, either crashes the game if you are lucky OR your pc. Disable XMP, play it again.

It could also use a mod to restore the ear animations for the Khajiit. Their ears are just decorative now where they once moved around as the Khajiit characters emoted. I have to take a better look at any footage of the Argonians to see if they still have their horizontal eye lids.

Damn okay, as much as I want to make this game work, and TES IV was my favorite ES game so far, I'm gonna need to put this game down for a few months until Bethesda fixes their shit. This game is unplayable on a 7800x3d/RTX 4090. Either get bad FPS drops to 15-30 fps or really bad ghosting. Playing in 4k with RT off and DLSS Quality

There's a patch for Oblivion Remastered in the works that should hopefully fix a lot of memory leaks and other optimization issues
