Spyder Arachnid Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 There are other child mods out there seem to be significantly more popular than SK, despite being rife with technical errors, conflicts, and general all around bad practice and bugs. I'm curious to hear what the average user thinks/sees in them that they prefer over SK. I'm committed to making the mod better, so if you want to see something happen now's your chance. I'm not even going to touch why other people like the other playable child race, as I don't feel like getting a warning or starting a dispute over it. As for me, the thing that I liked about the original CotS, was the child replacer and how it looked. Plus, they used Apachii hair for the vanilla children, to make them match up more with those of us who use NPC overhauls that give all NPCs new looks with all the new custom hairs. For instance, I made this using SkyKids and think it would look awesome as a child NPC replacer (minus the outfit of course): That was made using ECE. It shows the potential that SkyKids has, yet none of the vanilla children for SkyKids look anything like that. I feel you are trying to go for a more realism look than "anime" like the others do, but when you use a bunch of mods that change the appearance of your adult characters (male and female) and all the NPCs in the game to use those assets, you want the kids to kind of match up to the rest of everything else as well, so they don't stick out and not match. The clothes are just fine as vanilla clothes cause you can use stuff like Dovahkinder to make them look nicer, but it would be nice to see the vanilla children using the SkyKids assets to their full potential. Hair, looks, everything. That's my take on it at least.
en_hawk Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 Hmm, see one of the issues here is that I'm really not very good with making faces, CGE or no. If there's folks interested in the classic CotS child replacer, I could build it in as an optional module(or hell, the entire CotS race even) without too much effort. Our existing vanilla NPC replacer and race set was designed as close to vanilla/lore friendly as possible(which is more or less why things are the way they are, ie the lack of apachii hair etc), with the intent that other/alternative races/packages/replacers/etc could be built off of the same framework to cater to different tastes. Obviously this last part hasn't happened yet, mainly due to my own lack of 'creative vision' and not being very good at making faces. So right now I'm seeing 'more anime/fantasy styled npc replacers and/or races' as a predominant theme, correct? That's something that could be done, however as I've mentioned before I'm really not that great with facegen and beyond pilfering other deprecated mods(*cough*CotS*cough*) I'd be hard pressed to make this happen on my own. Unfortunately I don't see a lot of people springing up to volunteer either. On the 'fantasy' race front, we do already have a pair of addon races, though sadly they seem to be overlooked most of the time. I dunno, maybe we could do a second set of vanilla child race counterparts setup to use more fantasy-esq facegen(separate from the proposed CotS clone) as an alternative? I'm really grasping at straws here... Either way, your input is much appreciated. If you've got any other suggestions, or want to build on anything I've said here, do feel free, I'm all ears.
Spyder Arachnid Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 If there is a way you can use the npc child faces from the old CotS mod, that would be great. As long as it doesn't come with CotS itself, as that mod just overwrites a ton of vanilla stuff like RCotS does. I really wish I could help with the faces and such, but I have no knowledge of CGE, as I have been using ECE for my stuff. Not sure if you'll really need to create a more fantasy based addon, as SkyKids alone is pretty well done. And as you saw above, that look I made was made just using the basic SkyKids Nord race. So you can get a pretty good variety just using the regular races that come with SkyKids already. As for the playable race stuff, I'd have to ask my brother on that lol. He just got Skyrim a little while ago and he is loving your Monli race. I can see if he has any ideas on anything to add. But otherwise, the mod itself is great. I would say the best playable child race out there, as it is completely standalone and doesn't mess with the vanilla assets like the others do. Plus it's not riddled with tons of bugs and problems like the others. The only thing I suggest is an alternate child replacer that is like you said, more fantasy based.
Lylium Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I liked that other children mods, like Xvision and even RCOTS have patches for bigger npc-adding mods that modify the children to match the rest. That's something I would like to see done with this mod, as I prefer it. A patch for Interesting NPCs, Inconsequential NPCs, Wyrmstooth, Falskaar, etc, would be nice to have. EDIT: I would like to say that I do appreciate the work you've already done though. It's good work.

en_hawk Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 the ability to change hairs and use custom hairs easily in the race menu. edit: i'm not even sure what i'm asking for, now that i think about it. Custom hair/eye/cosmetic mods are already supported, they just need compatibility patches. There are several ones premade and available in the OP, as well as the tools and instructions to do it yourself for any mod you like.
Skyrimfloo Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 This is an awesome mod that I've briefly tested, but I have a couple questions: Glad you like it, I'll go through these one at a time. Thanks for the thorough answers! Is there a way to use the face presets from RCotS with the races of this mod? I find some of the faces of that mod a bit more appealing, kinda more "cute", like for example the khajiit ones that have much bigger eyes and what seems to me a more childish face. I've tried to emulate this, but even with the CharGen patch, I don't see as many sliders as with adult races, including the eye size ones. Well to start with, SK uses the vanilla facegen assets as opposed to custom ones like RCOTS does(they're copied into a custom directory of course). I asked people what they wanted for facegen back when I was setting everything up and nobody really seemed to care, and since I'm not exactly that great at making faces thats just what we got stuck with. You can still make good looking faces, they just need a lot of love with CGE to make it happen(case in point, the vanilla replacer faces, they were all done with CGE). As for the missing morphs it could be the nuska morph pack if you have it installed/enabled for the adults as that isn't enabled with the patch, though the eye size sliders are part of the ECE morph pack and should be present as they are for me. CGE has been updated and merged into race menu and supposedly no longer needs patches for custom races, I still need to play with it, but you could give that a go in the interim to see if it helps. Unfortunately it seems that the presets for Khajits don't include eye size sliders, so I suppose that all those cute faces I've seen in screenshots and in RCotS come from using ECE vertex editor, probably. My question was more on the lines that if I switched the face mesh and .tri files for the ones of this mod, they'd carry the changes, or otherwise I'd end with a spawn from hell, lol. Currently I use Xvision Children with Prince & Pauper and non-essential children patches. How compatible are all these mods with Skykids? I'd be happy to ditch Xvision, the faces always looked weird to me, but I like the child clothes that PaP adds, as well as the non-essential patch. SK should be compatible with anything as far as conflicts are concerned, as long as it doesn't try to alter the same vanilla things that SK does(ie the vanilla children, but that's about it). Admittedly I am unfamiliar with PaP, though any clothes designed for the vanilla child races are likely going to be incompatible by nature(vanilla child clothing is setup differently than regular clothing, which is what SK users). If you provide a link I can look into it in greater detail and possibly make a compatibility patch. As for essential/nonessential, the SK children are non-essential out of the box, I just haven't got around to making patches to change them back and forth at will. PaP is a mod that adds lots of child outfits with different styles and switches them to all NPC children so that they look different, but if this mod turns children into "little adults" that equip armors and cannot equip children clothes anymore, then unless you edit the outfits as well to make them adult armors it won't work anyways. A pity, but considering how huge is the selection of vanilla adult clothes and armors, I don't really care not using that mod anymore. I used it simply because it was weird to see Balgruuf's children wearing the same rags as the homeless Lucia, lol. But now there are many other choices. If SK children will eventually turn all children into non-essential, that's good news since it means one mod less to worry about. Hopefully that answers your questions. Anyway, that brings me to a couple of questions of my own that I've been meaning to ask for a while now and just haven't go around to. I'm curious as to what you folks want to see done to the mod now and in the future? There are other child mods out there seem to be significantly more popular than SK, despite being rife with technical errors, conflicts, and general all around bad practice and bugs. I'm curious to hear what the average user thinks/sees in them that they prefer over SK. I'm committed to making the mod better, so if you want to see something happen now's your chance. Well, I started with Xvision Children Redone, maily because for some reason after installing RealVision ENB I got all children with radioactive orange skin and I couldn't find any texture replacer alone that fixed it (I suppose it has to do with the meshes themselves), so I picked this one because I liked the idea of the children having different faces. I picked PaP afterwards to give them more unique looks, but since then I haven't been too satisfied with it because the faces look too weird in some cases, and they look like wearing makeup. I had seen mods like RCotS and this one around, so after my last mod review I decided to try it on, lol. My first point of interest with this mod is the idea of adding better children to the game. The idea of having child bandits and better-looking NPCs seems the most appealing to me, more than being able to play child races, but that's also a nice addition. I liked the idea I read somewhere about making the child race better integrated with the game beginning so that you're not choosing different "races" in the menu. I think it would be nice also to be able to "grow up" at some point in the story, if you play for a long time with a character. While trying to keep the mod as vanilla as possible, I would love to see an NPC replacer that switched the races of some children to more exotic ones. I would love to go to Riften and find argonian, khajiit and elf adoptables, but of course the problem would be to choose which ones to do this. I assume that adding a modular mod that allowed you to choose the race for some of the children might be hard work, but I think it'd be a cool idea. Also, I'm not sure if mods like Interesting/Inconsequential NPCs add children, but since they're popular mods I would say that a patch for those, once everything else has ben donde, would be a good adittion. So, I don't really ask much that hasn't been done already or is planned. I'll be happy when the weight slider support is implemented, and when all the NPC children are properly done. The race-swap for NPCs would make me the fan nº1 though.
AlwinWormheart Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 If it's about the face making, I am always available. Managed to twiddle more childlish features out of CGE, but I'll have to get rid of ECE (yes, I installed it against your warnings, hihi). Now I just need to touch up on the head exporting with CGE so they can be used as presets.
en_hawk Posted May 3, 2014 Author Posted May 3, 2014 Unfortunately it seems that the presets for Khajits don't include eye size sliders, so I suppose that all those cute faces I've seen in screenshots and in RCotS come from using ECE vertex editor, probably. My question was more on the lines that if I switched the face mesh and .tri files for the ones of this mod, they'd carry the changes, or otherwise I'd end with a spawn from hell, lol.Ah, you were referring to the beast races. RCotS uses highly customized facegen assets for its khajiit, which is what enables the use of the eye size sliders. You should be able to copy the RCotS assets over and have them function properly, though I'm not entirely sure if they are CGE/ECE enabled or simply look that way out of the box(my guess is the latter). Either way, its worth a shot, copying the files over shouldn't break anything and you can always revert if it does. PaP is a mod that adds lots of child outfits with different styles and switches them to all NPC children so that they look different, but if this mod turns children into "little adults" that equip armors and cannot equip children clothes anymore, then unless you edit the outfits as well to make them adult armors it won't work anyways. If SK children will eventually turn all children into non-essential, that's good news since it means one mod less to worry about. Yeah that's definitely going to be incompatible out of the box, as it assumes the vanilla kids are still setup as 'kids'(and would likely overwrites the npcs themselves to add the armor, adding even more incompatibility). I could fairly easily make it compatible(I'd have to rework the meshes, but that's not too much of a hassle) and put out a patch if you'd like. The armor patcher and associated infrastructure makes handling child clothing and the like extremely trivial. While trying to keep the mod as vanilla as possible, I would love to see an NPC replacer that switched the races of some children to more exotic ones. The race-swap for NPCs would make me the fan nº1 though. Alright so, adding bandit children and the like is a common theme in these sorts of mods, and definitely doable. The 'aging' bit is slightly beyond my reach, and would take someone with more creative vision than myself to pull off. Race-swapping and/or adding extra children of some of the more exotic races is doable as well, though that would probably have to come later once everything else is polished off(and likely in its own optional module). As for the large mods like interesting/inconsequential NPCs, I'm fairly confident that they add children, and compatibility patches is something I've had in mind but just haven't gotten around to yet(mostly due to my difficulty with making good faces). And lastly, as you point out, the vanilla children aren't even done yet sadly, which is another thing that needs to get finished. Honestly I'm just really not that good at making faces, and the vanilla facegen assets we're using make it a real pain in the ass. If it's about the face making, I am always available. Managed to twiddle more childlish features out of CGE, but I'll hace to get rid of ECE (yes, I installed it against your warnings, hihi). Now I just need to touch up on the head exporting with CGE so they can be used as presets.Any help would be appreciated, perhaps we should discuss this in greater detail. I really do advise staying away from ECE though, as its a technical disaster on the inside despite the pretty outside. CGE offers 90% of the functionality, with 0% of the issues. I do still need to look into the new CGE now that its been merged into racemenu and try and get everything setup for that, but once its done I'd love any help I could get. To sidetrack slightly, I think some people end up getting scared off due to the 'limitations' of the vanilla facegen morphs without CGE/ECE. The morphs and presets are rather crude and it takes great effort to make something nice out of them without CGE(which I cant build into the normal old racial presets for the mod sadly). The other mods that come with more fantasy styled morphs out of the box seem to lend themselves to making cuter faces out of the box with close to zero effort(or use of ECE, not that it doesn't help). Perhaps the decision to try and keep as close to vanilla/lore friendly has damned us in this regard, hence my suggestion for a second set of vanilla child counterpart races with a more fantasy styled set of facegen assets(not that I would know where to start on that, unfortunately).
KyuubiD Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 For the NPC children, maybe an alternate set as was mentioned earlier. I use Xvision to cover the children added by other mods with SK loading last of course. The only thing I would like to see added is a patch to remove/prevent the sunken cheeks for vampire children. It kills me to see the face that I finally get to my liking destroyed when I become one. I ended rolling back my current play though to an earlier save and going werewolf instead because of it. Even so, awesome mod. Whatever you decide to add is cool.
Skyrimfloo Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 About the "aging" part, is it really that difficult? I mean, you can change your race just by going into the racemenu. I know it's a silly thing, and optional, but it would give a very cool "Fable" vibe to the game. I picture starting the game as a child that slowly grows to adulthood after many adventures. Of course, I understand that this is a very early framework to be thinking about more important changes, but I can't help getting my imagination running on this issue. I think it'd be awesome that, as a child race, you could be adopted, instead of adopting children yourself, and form a family where you're the child. Maybe once the race and NPC stuff gets done we could experiment with more complex mods that made being a child more natural to the game. About the "child bandit" thing, I've seen how RCotS does this, but I would not like having children everywhere, to be honest. I would understand that there were bands of orphans roaming the world, but I wouldn't really see too fitting to see thalmor, stormcloak or imperial soldier children. Maybe necromancers would do, if we were to consider that the children were taken from their families to be taught magic from an early age. Maybe there could be a quest to "go teach those kids a lesson" and beat some "education" in them without killing them, lol. That also brings to my mind another idea: it would be cool to have lots of NPC children in Winterhold learning magic like some Harry Potter concept, lol. In any case, I'm going to try switching head models with RCotS and see how it goes.

CotS only added them to bandit and forsworn lists, they didn't feel "everywhere", not to me anyway. children soldiers makes absolutely no sense, obviously, don't see why they'd be added in there. but Forsworn kids? sure. aren't they feral people? bandit kids also make sense, but maybe if they were teenagers. i still didn't mind, though. i just thought it was immersive and quirky to encounter them. the only other game i've played where you "maybe" encounter kids is Fallout series. oh and for some reason the Lolydia plugin isn't working for me, any suggestions?
en_hawk Posted May 3, 2014 Author Posted May 3, 2014 oh and for some reason the Lolydia plugin isn't working for me, any suggestions? What do you mean by not working, is she just not getting replaced? Do you have another replacer loaded that could be conflicting?
waspdeath Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 she just isn't being replaced. i installed it before the Monli race, though, by accident, if that has anything to do with it. i thought it was a standalone follower at first, then i saw my game was crashing on start, then i saw it required the Monli race in Wrye.
en_hawk Posted May 3, 2014 Author Posted May 3, 2014 You've got to have something conflicting and overriding her later on, post your load order.
AlwinWormheart Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 En_hawk, I would really love some tips on working on the skeleton without the hkx editing. Cheers!

You got the mod you wanted. But seriously, there actually some good mods out there changes Winterhold into a better place all together.

Its position would only matter if you had something else installed that overwrites her, as a test you could try putting it at the bottom and seeing if that fixes it. If that doesn't help, try 'player.placeatme a2c8e' in the console and see if she spawns correctly.

I'm glad you like the mod! Yeah I'm already aware of the issue with the unofficial patch, its a problem with SkyProc unfortunately(and its been there for quite a while now); it can't handle loading the files in with the esms and loads it at the top of the esp's, per its file type, instead. Ultimately it shouldn't be an issue, due to the kinds of records that are being mastered in the armor patch, but it is annoying seeing it get lit up in Wrye constantly. As for the race menu update, I saw that one myself just recently and have been meaning to look into it in greater detail. It sounds exciting though, not having to patch for custom races anymore. Thanks for the heads up, though.
johann7124 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 I am hoping that you will be getting a patch out for Inconsequential NPC's fairly soon.
Reiyichi Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Anyone else getting a weird facegen data issue with this mod installed? I am sure it is because of something I did wrong, but I can't for the life of me figure out what I did or if I did do something wrong... I have seen this on Lucia so far, and it appears that she is the only child in Whiterun to have this happen to her, but it may be that something is off with my Skykids Hearthfire addon install now that I think about it, as she is added via Hearthfire... I will have to do more testing, but that may be it. It may be an issue with my Hearthfire addon install for this mod... Here is the SSMake sure you don't have any other mods that alter the NPCs(or if you do, make sure the SK replacers load after them), and try reinstalling the HF addon and overwriting to ensure the facegen data is correct. The effect you are seeing is a result of a discontinuity between the NPCs face in the plugin(whichever plugin loaded last) and the actual exported facegen data; skyrim just kinda breaks and does this when that happens.. I am positive that is the reason now, as Sofie had a Dunmer child's body and ears on an earlier save. Both times I was using Skykids and another child replacer cause at the time, Skykids HAD no NPC child replacer yet, so I had to make due with another child mod for the NPCs. Anyway, I had to wipe my data folder for an unrelated issue anyway (too many mods, got bloated and started crashing every time I killed a dragon no matter what I tried to do to fix it), so I started over from scratch. Now that Skykids has a NPC child replacer that handles almost all children in skyrim, I can ditch the other child mod.
