Why do all these anime nowadays have to be super dark and sad?
What happened to the days where heroes would just save the day and bad guys would just try to ruin it?
What the hell, man? Now I'm afraid of starting new anime because they might have something like that. D:

It's fucked up. I'm gonna stick to my 80s and 90s harmless fighting anime from now on. ._.;

title(super dark and sad anime)?

Maybe the audience getting bored with happy story? And this is just my opinion, but some anime that has tragedy hit me in the feels more than mainstream anime.

You can try Fairy Tail, well some character has some dark past, but generally it nice.

or RAVE Master if you want to see a bit of tragedy. They both have same mangaka.

Cartoony cheesy characters are mainstream? From where I'm standing it looks like rape is what's mainstream now.

Now every character has to have a dark past, some hidden secret that is their drive to do good or evil.

No wait, evil doesn't exist now, it's all good but done in bad ways with misguided logic. Right?

Goku wasn't raped and he did good things, Frieza wasn't raped and he did bad things.
Now every character is some emo PTSD wreck and every one of them has to have some deep backstory to lead them to do good or bad.

That's what's mainstream. I wish they'd go back to simple stories and characters, or at the very least stop raping characters to make them more compelling.

There seems to be a general mainstream pattern with most anime/manga, especially the ones for the feels. The story starts off super comfortable - everyone's problems are minor, their hearts are full of love, and we grow fond of them through their little antics. Now that we are invested, let us through the proverbial Pandora's Box at them all - they must suffer for all that happiness so they truly appreciate what they had! In the case of anime, we can only hope we get a full closure ending after everyone has dragged themselves through hell. But sometimes, because it's waiting for the manga, there is no real ending - everyone is in a place of less suck, but they're stories are not finished. In some cases, they never are.

Examples:

1. Fruits Baskets

Let's follow Tohru Honda, whom is an absolute sweetheart with the recent tradegy of losing her mother and is now homeless - d'aww, we just wanna hug her. Yuki and Kyo are both misunderstood for different reasons, but are generally good guys and genuinely care about Tohru - d'aww, hugs for them too. We meet the rest of the cursed Sohma family and despite tragedy and difficulty from the curse, they are all "content" to some degree on the surface. Now, do we love everyone? Good - time for Akito to make an entrance. All the people you just fell in love with are basically slaves to Akito thanks to their curse, and they are treated like shit for it at every turn - eyes lost, arms/ribs broken, children whipped, and people locked away in rooms for the rest of their lives - it's all fun the Sohma family!

In the anime, Tohru makes a plea with Akito - while he is PULLING THE HAIR FROM HER SKULL - to not lock up Kyo. Somehow, this melts his heart, momentarily, and he just wants to be rid of her so he agrees. The Sohma's are all still cursed, and Tohru still hasn't ended up with anyone yet, but at least she hasn't been kicked out of their lives. Yay, ending? This lack-of-ending is brought to you by "Running ahead of the mangaka and managing to change a major plotpoint on accident that could NOT be fixed for a second season." If you've read the manga, you know what it is.

If you haven't read the manga and want to know:

Anime - Akito is male. Very obviously male - open shirts, tight clothes, etc. His gender is established

Manga - Akito turns out to be a woman, which changes the course of the plot for most of the final quarter to half of the series. Apparently, there was a reason "he" was always in baggy, bulky kimonos!

2. Sailor Moon

I don't think I even need spoilers for this one. You fall for everyone in the first couple seasons, and they triumph with the power of love. Middle and later seasons - OH GOD, YOU ALL DIE SO MUCH, WHHHHHHHY. The Outer Senshi are particularly good at dying in tragic, heroic ways - and a lot of times, it's during some sort of situation where they are running in conflict to the Inner Senshi. Somehow, when the Senshi die constantly, we're always surprised and we're always heartbroken about it.

Most series I have watched follow this pattern:

  • Nagi No Asukara
  • Sword Art Online - There are full episodes dedicated to characters' happiness in a rather bleak circumstance - juxtapositioned with moments that make you weep for your humanity.
  • Death Note - OK, this one is borderline - I mean, the series starts with him being a bit of a megalomaniac vigilante - but holy God Complex, does it go nuts for the second half!
  • Trigun
  • Rurouni Kenshin
  • Inu x Boku Secret Service
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena
  • Ouran High School Host Club
  • etc...

It's not too surprising that this pattern is so prevalent. After all, it's a classic storytelling framework. You introduce the characters in their situation and once readers are comfortable with them, you throw in conflict - your audience becomes invested in the characters' wellbeing and wants them to persevere. The thing most anime tends to miss is the ending - the characters overcame adversity and are now better, happier people for it. A lot of anime doesn't get this - and when we get a good story with no ending, it leaves a bad taste in our months. I digress - pet peeve of mine.

In a lot of western shows, this conflict tends to me something a bit more black and white - an evil sorcerer, a mean kid in school, evil corporate, etc. Certainly we have shows with more depth and complexity, but we know that we're in for when we watch them from the beginning. When I started watching Game of Thrones, I knew exactly the kind of material I'd be seeing - I knew what could come up. Anime doesn't do that - it doesn't show us at the beginning that we're in for a psychological ride into the black recesses of humanity. It leads us by the hand, skipping through the daisies, before pushing us over the cliff into darkness.

I agree, Omega - sometimes, I would just like to watch something simple - the problem is, even the rom-coms go to dark places and there's no way of seeing it until it's too late. For instance, I started Servant x Service - it's hilarious. But I'm worried that a few more episodes in, the shit is going to hit the fan and everyone's lives will spiral into madness...

(Ah, Goldenboy, at least you're simple - he's motivated by knowledge and lust. Simple and elegant. Too bad you were only a handful of episodes.)

Couldn't agreed more.

This is why until now, I tried to avoid Clannad, Clannad After Story, Angel Beats, and Anohana.

Btw Code Geass too, shit I never thought its gonna end like that... Lelouch is the real Hero...

LOL, I read the manga when I was 13, my friend bring it on school, and we read it quietly in class. But still, the story is confusing for me...

I really liked Code Geass.

I like the way he did things.

I thought he was gonna turn into another Light Yagami[Death Note].

I seriously cried at the end. ;w;

Ah, fuck with Near and Mello, Light FTW!!!

That anime/manga really put your brain to think.

Code Geass R2, spoiler alert!!

Well.. for Lelouch, at least he die as a Hero... what make me sad is, there are only few people who realize his intention, suzaku and his sister, maybe kallen too... or Lelouch General (forgot his name).

And yes.. That ending really hit CG fans hard.. my friends is a big fan of CG and she's crying and depressed for 3 days..

Many fans that didn't like that ending tried to make some fan fiction like "Lelouch still alive" but in truth, Lelouch already dead, even the Official list (people who's died at the second season) Lelouch name is in the last of the list.

Death Note Spoilers:

I love how L acts adorable and friendly with Light before he gets killed. That hurt. xD

Code Geass Spoilers:

I like how at the end they have this random person driving a carriage that has the same(?) face as Lelouch and C.C. talking to herself to make people go crazy. I like to think he's still alive and proud of the actions he took to save the world from itself.

Final Fantasy Crisis Core Spoilers:

I have problems with heroic deaths. Crisis Core killed me. I can't play the game anymore knowing what happens to Zack.

Megaman Zero 4 Spoilers:

This game too. I get sad when I play it. That picture at the end of the remains of Zero's helmet is engraved in my head forever.

I wish they would make an English version of the PSP game, Code Geass : Lelouch of the Rebellion Lost Colors. It's a dating sim - NOTHING SAYS ROMANTIC LIKE LUNATICS WITH PSYCHIC POWERS AND POLITICAL MURDER. :D (In all honesty, it looks good.)

I got it thinking it would be cool mech-fighting stuff but nope.

I'm sure there's a translation patch somewhere though.

The last good animes i've seen are unfortunately few, since all this slice-of-life/harem crap is flooding the websites.

Those were:

Attack on Titan

Legend of the legendary Heroes

Gundam 00  (Hardcore gundam fans might hate me for liking it lol)

As of lately i'm reading the Tokyo Ghoul manga, that shit is so twisted i love it. It's anime got announced not long ago and if they keep to the manga it'll be awesome. Also really free of those "funny" moments (Yeah i really hate those, i want explosions and no fucking chibi faces).

Tokyo Ravens if anyone wants to watch cool powers being used in battles and sort of interesting vilains and characters overall.

Yup, I'm about to watch it myself.

Finished watching the first episode of Rail Wars (for those that like trains). But the wait for the rest of the subs for Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei is a real pain in the ass.

I'm an Gundam Lovers, but I think I quite like the anime, even though I still thinks CB is somewhat a scumbag with "let's stop a war... WITH A WAR!!"

It just that, the movie that serve as last sequel is sucks (IMHO), the alien... the giant flower... and the ending that make me says WTF...

The story was indeed kinda odd actually, it's basically trying to stop a war by showing sheer supremacy and intimidating the others, kind of.  Havn't seen said movie though.

Other than that i enjoyed 00 for particular one thing the most.

Explosions my friend, explosions!

The meaning/hidden message in the movie is quite nice especially with the quote at the last scene.

And the Gundam in Awakening of the Trailblazer is awesome.

but IMHO just.. don't watch it.. It's gonna ruined your memory of season 1 and season 2...

I post too quickly, sorry. xD

I'm writing down a list of stuff to watch. :3

Someone told me to watch Gintama, from what I've seen it looks kinda serious, though.

By that I mean I watched some of the beginning and it looked like it'd be weird and funny but it gets serious at times.

I'm torn on this one o3o

Danshi Kokosei no Nichijou/Daily Life of Highschool boys? It's very funny, there is no plot though, it's pure comedy.

Oh btw, Berserk is dark... sooo dark.. the evil guys isn't satisfied with just raping girls/woman, they need to mutilated them, or maybe eat them...
