Dude500X Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Seriously?? I think it was only in one state, New York I think, that did this but.. How does banning the sale of coke etc stop obesity? I cant wrap my head around this, must be some very angry soda drinkers in America.
polluxval Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 do you have the source? I can only find the ban on NY. http://healthland.time.com/2012/09/13/goodbye-big-soda-new-york-becomes-first-city-to-ban-large-sized-soft-drinks/ about the topic.

Yeah I thought it was just New York although some places are just saying America. Same diff either way. I dont understand the reasoning. Isn't it just going to make Coke black market?
polluxval Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I really don't care what the US want to achive with that but I'm pretty sure it will be like the prohibition on the US from 1920 to 1933... but with coke.
Strelky Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 People are under the impression that doing one or maybe occasionally two things, all the bad things in life and all their problems will instantly be solved, hate to break it to ya cousin but it don't work that way! Might've exaggerated a bit but hopefully you get my point.
Something Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Okay that thread title is INSANELY misleading, and I would seriously urge you to change it. Here's what happened, Michael Bloomturd, the punitive Mayor of New York City, decided that obesity was a problem, and like any good leftist, decided that the problem is the people have too much liberty. So he, as Mayor, imposed his will on the people of New York City to ban Soft Drinks that are over 16 Ounces. America didn't ban anything, yet, that I know of, certainly not soda, so let's get our facts straight. Of course I think what Bloomturd is doing is atrocious if not outright tyrannical but he isn't stopping there, no sir. He also banned Trans Fats from restaraunts a few years ago, looked to ban Styrofoam Cups not long ago, and is now looking to ban ear buds that play music over 85 decibels.

News said America, New York w/e its all America, had banned it. But well, you guys elect some crazy people. Also, what is an Ounce..? How much is 16 ounces in Litres? Is it alot? Trying to see if its justified. Because people die if they drink over a certain amount of this stuff a day, and if its breaking that amount then I guess the ban is justified.
Something Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Here's a visual aid for you metric-heads. It's not at all justified, it's tyrannical that one man gets to impose their will on law-abiding people like that. Obesity is a matter of personal responsibility, Bloomturd taking up this cause takes the burden of responsibility away from the individual and transfers it, at least in part, to the government. Besides, it's not like it'll do a bit of difference, if people want 20 oz sodas they'll just get two 10 oz sodas. or two 12 oz sodas. Believe me, most consumers aren't looking at the size as listed on the packaging. And do change your thread title. It's so misleading it's in the realm of outright lying.

If it were lying then no soft drinks would of been banned. We have already deduced that it is not ALL of America, but New York is America, thus I do not see the point in changing the title over a small technicality. Anyway, they've essentially banned family sized bottles of coke.. hmm, seems silly.
Commander Drag Queen Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 It is, especially since there are many Americans who can control their diets and still enjoy a 20 oz (591 mL) coke on the weekends. On a side note, why is it that America is still on the Imperial system of measurements?
Ashal Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 We have already deduced that it is not ALL of America, but New York is America, thus I do not see the point in changing the title over a small technicality. Because it's insanely misleading and wholly inaccurate? Though clearly your more concerned about your "message" than facts.

Anyway ,This is such rubbish You can be a responsible soda drinker . soda doesn't kill people , people kill people! It our God given right to drink soda I think the Americans are the only country that use the Imperial system? I could be wrong.
Happysparkles Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Oh wow I was just talking about this the other day. Apparently they say that we are too fat and do not know how to stop ourselves so they force certain size drinks on us and pretty much attempt to raise prices. It is sad how in some small ironic way we lose a small right to the point where some would it even notice. Tbh if I want to guzzle two gallon for soda in a movie theatre I feel it is my choice to choose and not for them to tell me. Also from what I understand it is only in New York and they are attempting to make it state wide but I will have to find research later today to back that up. I can only imagine what's next.
Something Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 It's only in New York CITY. I dunno if it's going to be affected statewide, but considering what a moron the governor Andrew Cuomo is, it wouldn't surprise me. And as to what's next, I already told you

I'm going to do my best not to get too political but since Something opened the door with this hyperbole (which I bolded.) I felt the need to respond. Anytime the American right talks about liberty it is time for some massive eye rolling as their definition of liberty is riddled with hypocrisy. Oh, and as a hardcore 'leftist' I disapprove of what Bloomberg is doing. He's not acting on any leftist ideals despite what people like Limbaugh tell the suckers in their audience. I get the general idea of what he is attempting but that doesn't make it any less silly.
ChancellorKremlin Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I do think that's pretty stupid. Yes, we get it - soft drinks, fatty foods and lack of exercise are bad for us. Its still our choice, and ultimately, our responsibility too. The government should have nothing to do with it. Its like the introduction of minimum pricing per unit of alcohol here in the UK - in an attempt to reduce alcohol consumption. Its not going to work, its going to make alcohol cost more, and its just an unjustified attempt to meddle in people's lives.

Yeah, the American left is actually for less of this. For instance, a lot of people on the left believe our 'War on Drugs' over here is a waste of money and is just making drug dealers rich and we ought to legalize, at least, marijuana. Personally, I'd legalize it all. We already have laws against driving while drunk and/or impaired by drugs so we should be good to go on that front and if some moron wants to kill him or herself with crack cocaine, well, that's Darwin in action to my mind.
Something Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 If you disapprove of what Bloomberg is doing, you're probably not a leftist. You sound more like a libertarian, whom are to the right of me. Also we have a drugs thread if you wanna check it out.
Ark of Truth Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I really don't see what the problem is? So you can't buy a 20 oz of coke to more......life moves on....
Something Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 The problem is, as Kremlin described it (I agree with Kremlin? What is this world coming to O_o) it's the government intruding into our lives, taking away our ability to make choices for ourselves. As I describe it, it's these little, seemingly inoccuous intrusions into our lives that are what ultimately empower despotic government.
Riggswolfe Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 If you disapprove of what Bloomberg is doing, you're probably not a leftist. You sound more like a libertarian, whom are to the right of me. Also we have a drugs thread if you wanna check it out. I am very definitely not a libertarian, I believe the government can do some good, particularly in helping out those less fortunate and regulating out of control businesses. I love dystopia in my scifi but don't want to see it in my real life! I am a leftist, I'm just not the imaginary variety who thinks liberty is a bad thing, I'm the actual real deal who approves of things like gay marriage while disapproving of things like telling people not to buy large soft drinks and potential drone strikes on American citizens. (The drone bit is why I snicker when conservative pundits talk about how Obama is the most liberal president ever. No, no he's not. He's to the center right on most things and far right on national security. It's depressing really.) About the only libertarian ideal I agree with is their view of foreign policy (As articulated by Ron Paul, a crazy racist, but he still has the occasional good idea). That being that we need to just get out of other country's business and take care of our own problems. Edit: Anyway, I should stop now as this is getting to political and I don't want to get into trouble. I love this community. I was simply offended by your remark about leftists wanting to take away liberty. It was just a bit of Rush Limbaugh propaganda but it is so hypocritical it always makes me see red. Still, despite that you seem relatively reasonable so I'm going to let it go.
gregathit Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 I really don't see what the problem is? So you can't buy a 20 oz of coke to more......life moves on.... The banning of soda's larger than 20 ounces is not specifically so much of a problem, as the COMPLETE FUCKING STUPIDITY COMPLEX of HYPOCRISY. Did he ban Ice Cream Cones larger than one scoop? Did he ban oversized candy bars? Did he ban pretty much EVERYTHING on the menu at fast food restaurants? All of these are just as fatty and unhealthy as 20 ounces of soda pop. Yet he only picked 1 fucking thing out of HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of items. Why? Because he is a FUCKTARD with his head jammed up his ASS!!!! Since I too have my head up my ass, I am somewhat of an authority on things like this......... To be serious, some rich dude (or the ACLU - they sure as shit don't have anything better to do) needs to go into New York and start giving away 20 ounce bottles of soda pop on the street so he can get arrested and get this law in front of a judge and get it invalidated. You can't legislate folks to be skinny, regardless of how much good it would do them.

Who do you think are the ones fighting for our civil liberties everyday? I know they are the right's favorite whipping boy but in light of America post-9/11 they've never been more important.
Something Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 @Riggswolfe Oh my God You're an old-school democrat! Holy crap, I thought you guys were extinct, I honestly thought i'd never see one ever again! IMO you sound left of center, but not someone I would personally consider a "leftist." Dude, don't throw in with them. They have the centralization and consolidation of power in mind, to the detriment of liberty. And the ACLU? Literally their sole function nowadays appears to be protecting us from having Menorahs or Nativity Scenes on public display.

Ever since the patriot act and gay marriage have become issues I can assure you the ACLU is doing good things. I disagree with your assessment of leftists, then again I consider most conservatives to be one goose-step away from out and out fascists. (Far right conservatives I should say.) And yes, I am likely left of center, however, I just let myself get called a leftist alot because all the conservative pundits(and a few of my conservative friends) view anyone to the left of Reagan as a communist in the making.
