Cervids: Deer Races of Skyrim

View File

OBSOLETE. SEE Bad Dog's Ungulates: Horse, Deer, Minotaur

A cervid race with a range of nose shapes, horns, face patterns, and a few hair styles. Gazelles, moose, goats, and giraffe are all achievable.

Face morphs are on different sliders and their function may not be obvious. Play with it. Ear size is on a face slider, and some sliders that are labeled for the face affect nose shape. The Thomson's Gazelle face pattern is on the dirt slider, the rest on more-or-less obvious tint sliders. Horns are on the brow slider.

The giraffe pattern is on an overlay. There are other patterns as well--Tommy stripe, fawn spots, socks, etc. Thanks to ASlySpyDuo for many of the patterns.

Download and install the files you want. Order doesn't much matter.

  • Designed for use with the SOS body. If you care about seams along the thigh but don't want dick, load SOS and don't enable its ESPs.
  • There's a file with schlongs if you want them. That does require SOS. If you want the girls to have dicks, enable that ESP and set the schlong priorities.
  • There's a file for digitigrade feet but for this mod I'm on the fence about whether it's better. They look fine in plantigrade, I think.
  • Download and install the CBBE file if you use that body.
  • Courtesy of @Ratchet the last Lombaxthere's a NPC file that turns a few existing Skyrim residents into deer, mostly in Falkreath, and adds a few new NPCs.

Requires RaceCompatibility.

I'll probably do an NPC file at some point, but otherwise this is just about done.

SE version here.

Went ahead and downloaded it. So far it's pretty damned good, however there are a few things I wanted to note. The first is that the default hoof size just seems incredibly small, almost like they're walking on stilts

Spoiler

HoovesSize1.thumb.png.2a9bdddca03b3df98ab4dc583af6d751.png

Which normally isn't much of an issue with any of the custom beast races as Racemenu gives you sliders for individual body parts, but it's a bit different in this case. The main hoof scales just fine, but the two little pointed hoof parts behind the ankle (I honestly have no idea what they're called) kinda scale with it in an odd way and causes the model to stretch sideways

I think this is exacerbated by the fact that to get to a size that seems okay (to me, I realize this is subjective) I have to scale their toes much more than I do other races. The other races I generally put somewhere between 1.05 and 1.15, but I ended up with a whopping 1.5 on these guys to get them where I like. That ends up looking something like this:

I personally think this would be a better starting point, especially since the scaling issue previously mentioned seems to affect upscaling far more than downscaling. But that's just, like, my opinion man.

On to less subjective matters, a few of the horns are downright borked at the moment. The first image has an obvious texture issue. The second and third image are suffering from Z fighting, however (the second far more than the third) but otherwise seem okay.

My opinion on the headshape and the options given to you via sliders is that it's quite versatile, and it should be possible to achieve a reasonable facsimile of any Cervid race I can think of off the top of my head.

With all that out of the way, I created a character I liked quite a lot and did a little photoshoot. I'm no ASlySpyDuo, but I think they came out okay

Spoiler

As the first of his kind thrust into the world, he looks to the sky and asks: "Talos, why have you forsaken me with no dick?"

But that's okay, for he learned to (over)compensate with the power of bulge

And then, enjoy a nice sunset

Of course, despite being docile creatures, they can be fearsome warriors too. It's pretty easy to be intimidating when you essentially have knives growing out of your head

Can't wait to see this mod get even better as it progresses.

Those look pretty fabulous.

The feet are driving me crazy. I'd like dainty deer-feet at the the skinny end but they have to meet the calf seam and I agree it just doesn't look right. What you've done is better from that point of view and looks fine for the heavyweights like reindeer, but they're heavy like horse hooves more than whitetail or antelope. Also I think these will benefit from the digi skeleton so I'll provide that option, and that will change the proportions somewhat.

The z-fighting is easy to fix, but it didn't show up on my system at all, tho I expected it, so I didn't bother. I just have to move the horn base up fractionally and maybe give it transparency so the edge can be blended.

I see you went with the full white belly. I'll ship that option as an overlay and the socks too. They look good. I'm still planning some giraffe horns to go with that overlay.

I also need to get the tail more animated. I want it to flip up when you jump, like a deer's does. Based on how vanilla tails move it should be easy, but maybe there just isn't much movement at the base. I'm going to play with weighting it to the bones at the tip of the tail. That will either get me what I want or else look terrible.

I can see what you're going for, but I just don't think it's going to work with the completely humanoid body shape you get from SOS. If you had a custom body that emulated the heavily tapered legs you could get away with making them smaller, but even then, bipedal creatures need a decently wide base to stand on or it just looks silly.

Here's an example of one of my favorite Whitetail pics. He's relatively lithe, but still has sizeable hooves:

Although I do acknowledge it's not impossible to have hooves that size look good on an anthro, you'll notice that in the vast majority of cases, the character design in question is super skinny/lanky on most pics with hooves that size:

All that said, it's again just my opinion, and they'll probably look much better in digi form at the current size so long as you keep the weight slider towards the lower end (the character I posted previously was at 0.64 for reference) but I think bigger works better in this case due to having to conform to the SOS body.

I'm no ASlySpyDuo

Which is probably good 'cause I don't do much males since I suck at posing them in general and more differing screenshot styles are nice to have around.

But here's a quick test because I had wrong ENB preset active and [insert other excuses why I didn't try anything else and why the snow is pixelated garbage].

Here we go, I took a few quick shots of my deer I'm enjoying him so far and am looking forward to future updates when they come out

Looking good. What body paint(s) are you using for that pattern? I really dig it.

------------------------------

Anyways, not to spam the thread, but I decided to see how well one could conform the body to suit the current size of the deer hooves and well...it's actually quite doable and looks better than expected

So while the proportions "out of the box" look odd, the potential is definitely there, and I feel like maybe I didn't give them a fair shake.

Despite the severely altered proportions, they seemed to hold up okay when posing, though I haven't really tested him with SL animations (note to self, do that later) but to quote Dr. Weird: "Gentlemen...this...could work!"

So here's a beach buck in board shorts (board sold separately)

Sooo, all I can say is damn, this is near perfect.

The hooves look great now and scale MUCH better, all the horns work, and hooray for dicks. Although I will mention that the penis portion of the mesh still points to the Khajiit textures by default, so without modifying the paths in the nif the Deer will end up with feline barbs because of the Khajiit normals. Looks like SlySpy beat to me to the mouth issue, so that's already been pointed out. Other than that though, I haven't seen any other problems.

I did try my hand at a Giraffe:
