In the beginning there was Buffout 4. Its maintenance waned as the creator went on hiatus for a while, and so a fork of it was created to continue under a new maintainer. More recently, Buffout 4 NG has gotten the necessary updates to work with the new game version, the maintainer of the original Buffout 4 has indicated their update is also still in progress but it's not available yet.

 

Anyway, that's a very long-winded way of saying that current versions of Buffout 4 NG are supposed to work for both the old 1.10.163 game version as well as somewhat for the new "NG" 1.10.984 game version (see the "Next Gen Status Report" section on its mod page for what is actually working on the newer game at this point and what's not done yet).

That also explains why I might be experiencing minor but regular FPS drops?  When I installed Buffout 4 NG, the popup box said one requirement was Buffout 4 and I never checked if the mod were the same, assumed NG was a "plugin" of the base Buffout 4 and installed both.  Looking at the requirements tab on the Buffout 4 NG description page itself, it specifies that no files are required, it's just under the requirements tab for "credit".  

Yeah, as well as the naming, that "requirement" could have been more clearly defined.

That's far more likely to be the facegen regression in the new game version. That X-Cell Fallout 4 mod you were having trouble with earlier is actually primarily intended to address that issue, but as you noticed results in headless NPCs for any that lack pregenerated face meshes and textures.

Correct, Buffout 4 isn't actually a requirement to be able to use Buffout 4 NG, the maintainer of Buffout 4 NG confusingly reused the required mods list to give credit to the original Buffout 4, that's all.

That's ok - you need a raise for all your efforts! 

I have noticed some "artefacts" this time around.  Sometimes a few flickering squares here and there, they were mostly apparent in the conversation with Skinny Malone and co. after springing Nick.  They seemed to flicker up and down like they were "scanning"?  

Speaking of, facegen regression?  Is that an issue with AAF, Buffout 4 NG or the actual NG version of the game?  Just curious.  Most of the FPS drops are barely a few FPS and I just thought it might also just be Bethesda's usual quality and world-class optimisation shining through again. 

And that's my entire week's sarcasm quota used up in one sentence...

NG version of the game itself. There's some debate currently as to the extent that facegen functionality worked in the game prior to the most recent update, but at the very least there has been some performance regression in on-the-fly face generation during gameplay in the new version.

Basically as I'm crunching through a rebuild for NG (all built on a base of a fully functional TFM AAF, haven't even touched any additional LL-sourced mods yet), I'm finding some that for whatever reason seem to conflict or cause AAF to not function or 'turn off' the homekey function. Was wondering if there was a list of things like that anywhere.

Read again, starting at the beginning. You may have missed the very first part where is says to ask for help in the AAF Discord if you run into problems with it. There are so many possible ways any of it can go wrong if you miss one small detail, and the added fun of the recent Fallout 4 game update has thrown a massive new wrench into things since a lot of what you can/can't use and versions you need to install will depend on what version of Fallout 4 you have and where you got it from.

But a new problem has appeared: The manual says that "AAF - The One Patch to Bang Them All" is outdated. 
This patch does cause problems (eg freeze in standing pose without animation). BUT without this patch the animation for 3 women disappears and the strap-on disappears.  What to replace this with?
