Mods that can crash your game!

I found a mod that I have been using forever and just until recently learned it was the cause of crashing in alot of the magic battles I was in.  Since removing it things have been fine, now that I came across this information I felt I needed to share so is there any mods that you know of that cause issues that maybe others don't? Feel free to post it.

Here's mine:

Crashes

Relationship Dialogue Overhaul- causes crashes when using magic

floating damage- during big battles will crash

Problems
SkyUI- Any mod that breaks weapons will cause the favorites groups in skyui to stop working if that weapon or shield is assigned to a group when it breaks.

Helmet Toggle- Causes alot of lag when switching weapons also may cause CTD

First of all: Good idea to start this topic ?

It's also interesting to hear more details in what combination/situations those mods where used while causing a CTD.

I can't confirm that RDO causes a crash on my setup if I use magic.

Although I don't have mods that modify the vanilla spells.

Also I don't think it is a good idea to have RDO below everything (including LAL) in LO like the mod author claims, it's more the opposite,

but I guess the RDO author never thought about LL mod compatibility ^^

On my setup I use RDO like this:

Relationship Dialogue Overhaul.esp

RDO - USLEEP Patch.esp

nwsFollowerFramework.esp               => during installation NFF will overwrite scripts of RDO to make it compatible (and maybe fixes?)

nwsFF_NoTeamMagicDamage.esp

LL and RDO:

Many LL mods depend on NPC comments to trigger force greets,

because RDO adds it's own comments it will lower the chance for a LL related mod comment event.

In my LO I keep (close to) all LL follower/NPC comment related mods below RDO.

thanks at the very least people can see and judge for themselves as every setup is differnt ^^ also II would of had no idea but i came across this forum https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimvr/comments/8acj5c/constant_crashing_in_battle_magic_casting/ and usually i was afriad to get

into magic battles especially if they used large frost spells would immediately CTD

Interesting topic! Never really noticed that RDO was responsible for anything other than dialogue!

The only recent crash that I've had in the middle of the battle was indeed fighting a bunch of warlocks in one of the Vampire kidnapping missions!

However I'm using a bunch of mods that increase the amount of NPCs in the game! So the were like 10-20 NPCs firing their projectiles with Serana using some custom spells on top of everything else! So it didn't really occur to me that it might be anything else except the old engine of the game giving up the ghost.

yea i never would of thought either lol its always been me thinking it was just skyrim being skyrim but I was trying to get dawnbreaker and there is a guy down there that uses a powerful frost spell and it would caused me to crash like 3 times and i was like ok thats it and i had to look it up to see if others were having this issue ^^

A few months ago I installed RDO by mistake. I thought I was installing an update for Guard Dialogue Overhaul. ?

Lots of crashes and general buggery-bollocks before I realised what had happened. Removed it and (ab-)normal service was resumed.

A mod that caused situational CTD or oddities on my last Setup:

More Interesting Loot for Skyrim.esp

It comes with it's own poison types:

Oil => creates a heavy HP dot on hit, electro versions of it cause also stagger

Poison => different versions of Poisons that can absorb HP/SP/MP on hit

Effects on my game:

Oil => often the oil is stronger than the vanilla enchantment of weapons, hostiles often get killed by it alone.

If a hostile gets killed from that dot while followers are still engaged with it, I observed that those followers didn't recognized their target as dead and got stuck in a fight animation, this also prevents all dialog with them.

[chance that will happen:  ~40%]

NFF's "Snap out of it" (only as spell), STA "slap NPC", SLF debug spells can repair those stuck followers.

Absorb Poison Types => If an absorb poison is applied on a weapon that has already an absorb enchantment => will cause CTD on hit.

[chance that will happen: ~ 95%]

Turns out it wasn't the fault of More Interesting Loot for Skyrim's oils and poisons applied on ranged weapons.

The custom bow mod I used caused the crashes all on it's own in combination with my setup.

Huh! Now I that you mentioned it, I think I might have had a crash there in some of my previous play-throughs! Probably the last one.

However my previous play-through was a disaster of such magnitude that it made me drop the game for quite a while! Quests wouldn't update correctly, particularly quest items would not be issued at all on anything that was connected to the main quest. After which I pretty much decided out right that I do not give a flying f*** about graphics overhauls of any kind, especially the ones that add scripts! Got myself a basic INI setup that just removes the horrible shadow effects which made me try said graphic mods to begin with, and did touch any mods that are high risk!

I did not bother merging mods, which I honestly think might have caused my previous bugger ups. And just kept smaller well tested mods threw most of my play-through, until recently when I decided to install Bruma, which is the only one that I consider to be a real big mod that I have right now. And it runs remarkably well, Campfire and Convenient Horses and all.

Can confirm the SkyUI issue.

Needed to clear the whole favorites section and assign weapons/equipment again.

Can confirm the Helmet Toggle issue.

Gave up on that mod and changed to: SkyJubs Invisible Helmets - No Helmet Mod - Hide Helmet Mod (with the drawback that some good looking helmets will also be hidden)

Alternative for followers: NFF has an option to show helmets only in battle.

SJs_InvHelms_Eng_Main_AHelm_A.esp

SJs_InvHelms_Eng_Plugin_DLC1_AHelm_A.esp

SJs_InvHelms_Eng_Plugin_DLC2_AHelm_A.esp

(=> bash patched)

or better a Smash Patch and/or TesVEdit Patch

Immersive Wenches:

I love that mod with all it's addons!

but:

Wenches scenes will break:

> SD+ enslavement, master will set you free right after the enslavement, master doesn't need to be a Wench for this to happen

> force greets from other LL mods get interrupted and might get stuck

> LL mod scenes can get stuck even if no wench is involved

=> solution: check in Immersive Wenches MCM "Disable wenches scenes"

Wandering vampire wenches:

> can cause CTD (near cities) in combination with some city overhauls (path finding issues?)

=> solution: if that happens on my setup I just deactivate "wandering vampire wenches" in MCM. They will not leave the city anymore if deactivated.

(the check box is below "disable wenches scenes")

Can confirm the Helmet Toggle issue.

...

Another alternative for Helmet Toggle is Toggle Options, which includes an assignable hotkey to toggle "headgear" that just toggles the equip state of the your currently equipped helmet (or circlet).  You just want to remember to hit that hotkey before you take on that next dragon though.

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/84174?tab=files

has some other useful toggles too.

This seems to be a way to open ended question..... Bad load orders, conflicts, ect may not be a mod fault just your bad modding practices some mods just do not play well with others. Now bad mods in general that is something all together different. Sloppy modding, script errors, dependencies, this list goes on but you get my point. Now there are some truly game breaking mods that do some real sneaky shit like changes to the base game that cannot be undone with out a complete delete of game..... but I digress

True but we are basically all test subjects to these mods that we play and everyone has different experiences depending on the load order etc this is more of a gathering information to try to help alleviate maybe potentional mod crashes. I would not have brought up the mods I have unless i was sure that they have helped me personally by either disabling them or being aware of what potential conflicts could happen.

You don't need to disable the wandering vampire wenches if you don't have CTD near cities.

The wandering vampire function is a bit confusing.

It seems it was meant for Open Cities(?), but it also works for most city overhauls.

If you have mods in LO that cause NPCs to stack up in cities near exits, because they can't leave anymore, than it's a good time to deactivate those wandering vampires.

You know what, I've actually had something serious happen to my game recently that I almost forgot about, not CTD causing but is definitely worth a mention here!

It has to do with mods that add custom music to the game like in my particular case Beyond Skyrim Bruma, which tend to increase the occurrence of a very nasty bug! The bug in question causing a complete absence of the game's music from your play-through! Apparently having to do with combat and idle music not canceling out when/where they should!

The music comes back when you go to the main menu, start a new game or load a save where it did not occur!

I've read of some methods to fix this but I found them to be iffy, and probably very situational to people's personal game setups.

The best method so far seems to just notice the problem in time and loading a previous save ASAP! And yes this appears to happen in vanilla Skyrim as well, but is very rare by comparison!

It is interesting but my current character is magic based, I also use RDO, and never crash even when fighting mages. Immersive wenches works fine to. I use mator Smash and to create a patch for my massive load order has saved me many many crashes.

I never really crash either except with magic fights, but again it depends on the load order it might be helpful that it may not be exactly RDO that causes the crashes but a combination with RDO is yet to be known but it has caused issues for others in the past i am just glad and sad it happened to be the issue for me. Also i tried mator smash and i just ran into issues who knows if i did it incorrectly but now i just use bash and merged patch.

Not CTD causing but annoying to track down:

If you use SL Aroused Monitor Widget and Display Enemy Level then SLAM will break. The solution, which I got from a guy on the SLAM support thread, is simple enough.

Drill down to the SKSE Plugins folder and open DisplayEnemyLevel.ini and change this line from true to false:

[EnemyHealthNumbers]
DisplayEnemyHealthNumbers = false

You still get the enemy level and health bar, it's just the HP number which goes, and SLAM Widget is happy.
