About This Game

I've played the demo. It's interesting so far.

 

One impression I got was that of limited choices. You don't get to choose your character (in this particular case, I don't mind, Mercy's cool, but it still conveys something in terms of player freedom). Then you start on the farm and want to explore, but no, you have to go after the stable hand. Maybe you don't want to suck some sweaty guy's dick, maybe you'd rather eat some cute maid's pussy, if a sex act really has to happen now. Well, too bad, because the game says that it's cock sucking time for you! When you speak with people, do you get different dialogue options (e.g. nice vs. arrogant vs. stoic)? No, the whole conversation is linear, no chance to add your own little touch to the character you're playing. Perhaps you'd like to avoid some combat with a bribe, a clever speech or seduction. Perhaps even get a special reward for finding a peaceful solution. But again, no option to do so. All combat is mandatory for progress.

 

The list goes on. Many times, all I can do is watch helplessly as, what is supposed to be my character, does something that I wouldn't have her do in this situation. Not just once or twice, but repeatedly. I think there's potential for improvement in this aspect of the game.

 

Minor issues are: There are too many pauses in the dialogues. When you're just waiting for the "..." to finally finish popping in. In general, it's a nice tool if you need a dramatic pause when you have no voice overs. But... in this... game... I think... it's a bit... overused. :)

And I had a really hard time with the fishing minigame. It was a bit too difficult for clumsy old me. Perhaps you could link it to some attribute? So that investing in agility, for instance, makes you better at fishing and gives you more time?

 

On the plus side, I liked the protagonist and the church event. The graphics are nice and the story seems interesting. Although, of course, it was barely touched by the demo. I also liked the attention to details. For instance, that you can have a unique little chat with almost every NPC you meet. Even if they're not relevant for the story.

Personal freedom is definitely something we want to open up. In general, much of the diversity of experience will come from how you build your character, but being that the demo only has the very beginning before Mercy has a chance to obtains different skills or can really distribute her stats very much, it is definitely very linear. Hopefully as we continue to improve the game, that's one element that continues to get fleshed out.

 

We also intend to take patron feedback on which elements should receive primary focus, whether it's adding more dialogue options to what exists already or progressing the story, etc. It helps to get a sense of the community's impressions, so we are always receptive to discussions about it.

Today has been a big day for us--we just dropped 3 releases!

Perhaps more importantly for this forum’s purposes, we uploaded a NEW version of the free demo! It includes some of the bug-fixes, polish and details added in later versions but without any of the post-Shiveworth content.

 

We listened to your feedback and the demo now also starts Mercy at level 10 and gives her a bunch of skill scrolls to play with, so she can experiment a little and breeze through the starting fights quickly if so desired.

Hi everyone!

 

The free playable version of Daughter of Essence has received a sizable version upgrade, from 0.1.1 to 0.4.2a, adding several hours of gameplay, intriguing narrative developments, sexual encounters, and more! You can grab it on the Patreon.

 

The alpha version has also made a big jump, from version 0.3.1a to version 0.7.2a, which includes exciting new content all the way up through Carvannah, the Desert City!

 

As always, the weekly build (0.8) was released Monday and continues fleshing out the city, adding new areas, quests, secrets, fights, and even a little voyeurism!

 

We have come so far in an incredibly short period of time, and we're so glad to have everyone along for the ride.

You may want to check the random walking of some NPCs. I just got blocked in by Toby at the harbor. Wanted to access the fishing spot (red X), he walked behind me and just stayed there. For over 15 minutes now. I couldn't get out. Had to load an old save because of that. And then the little brat does it again. Maybe his AI is telling him to move left and because he can't (the spot is occupied by Mercy), he doesn't move at all anymore. Had to load again to finally get to the fishing spot and back out.

We've uploaded a quick hotfix for the public build for that issue and have also fixed the blocked tiles on the docks. Thanks again!

Weekly Build Version 0.10!

 

Despite the holidays and a cold bad enough to turn my brain inside-out, I've managed to be much more productive than expected!

 

This week, we bring you version 0.10: THE HALL Edition! We're doing some last-minute tests and will upload the build soon.  However, there's good news and bad news. A new plugin we've implemented for special light and weather effects breaks save files. So, for this build and and perhaps a few more builds up to the next alpha, we're uploading two versions: one that has the special lighting & weather features and one that does not. We're hoping in that time that we can find a workaround to get old save files working with the new stuff.

 

Eventually, we'll be making the upgrade exclusive, however, because continually uploading multiple versions for multiple tiers is going to get out of hand fast. It's a bummer, but it's sort of the nature of the beast when you're constantly adding new content. 

 

Perhaps before then, we'll implement a feature to start at different chapters in the game. We'll figure it out!

 

Anyway, that's something for the future. For now, version 0.10a has old save compatibility and 0.10b does not, but has fancy firefly effects.

I have a major problem with your game: It's hard as hell.

 

In my first playthrough, I died against the bat... Come on, it's a BAT! It can't be so tough!

 

I tried again, beat this crap, wander a little, can't find a place to rest and to make my health go full. So I fight a monster fish who killed me...

 

Load a previous save and decide to go on the ship... Yes you guessed it, the sailor beat me.

 

Long story short, I can't even exit the island...

Hey Legrand, sorry to hear you're having a little trouble. You can recover for free in Mercy's bed back at the manor any time.

 

Some other things that may help are making sure you've gone to the docks to pick up your new weapon and visited your aunt to choose Mercy's class. The optional encounters are generally a little tougher than the required encounters, but it's definitely a more challenging game than some! We will keep working to refine balance and testing to make sure every build is viable.

Ho ok... I believed, since Mercy is going to run away, she was banned from her house. At least That what I understand from the guy who fight before going to the village.

 

Useful tip! Thanks you! (And yes, I found the other weapon et choose my class with the Aunt.

Weekly & Alpha Build: v0.12

 

Hi everyone! 

 

This week we've added some special features! This week's patch features a new system where Mercy can turn down sexual encounters (if they're not your thing) and get skill points rather than essence. Also, we've added a library that lets you look back at the art from the encounters to did choose to participate in. We're doing a special one-time alpha bump and releasing the weekly build and the alpha versions simultaneously!   • Added the ability to skip directly to the cove in a New Game
    • Choose Mercy's and Orus's specializations
    • Choose Mercy's weapon
    • Start at level 5 with 10 stat points to distribute

  • Mercy can now choose to abstain from sexual encounters and get rewarded skill points instead of essence!

Weekly Build v0.14! Happy New Year!
 
Hey everyone, we're hard at work finishing up the latest build, and it feels very fitting to have Carvannah wrapped up and the start of a new chapter in line with the start of a new year.

There're some finishing touches and some testing to be done, but you can expect version 0.14 before the day is out. 

 

A number of our commissions were wrapped up and we made a lot of progress on the base-building systems, so I'm happy with today's release.

Version 0.14 - 1/1/2018: Happy New Year!

  • Added new art to the Mercy/Hallie scene!
  • Added new art to the miners scene!
  • Added new art to the Mercy vibrator scene!
  • Added Carvannah’s conclusion and the return to the cove
  • Dalkon’s training grounds are now upgradeable and can provide access to all new weapon-based skills
  • Moon’s alchemy lab is now upgradeable and can provide access to all new potions & combat mixtures
  • Gertrude’s forge is now upgradeable and can provide access to all new armor runes
  • Eva’s spellbooks are upgradeable and can provide access to the previously unavailable tier of elemental spells
  • The docks are now upgradeable and offer a great deal of new fishing spots, as well as a regenerating stash of smoked smoothfins & a fishing line
  • The throne room is now upgradeable into a dining hall, which provides some regenerating food stashes & improves morale, a variable that tracks the general happiness of cove residents

  • Extended Cavern Areas now clearable in order to begin making room for new accommodations and base-building elements, excavated items will occasionally appear in chests and the rewards scale based on Mercy’s Luck
  • Spear Skill “Moonlight” renamed “Low Tide” to avoid confusion with Orus’s specialization
  • Fixed a minor lighting issue in the expanded cove tunnels

We're working on the new Witchdale chapter going forward, which is coming along great. I gave this a try, and found that combat was much to hard. Even once I figured out what the arrow on top of the screen was for, Mercy was completely unable to beat even the little critters in the town. Sorry, but all the demo accomplished was to convince me not to bother with it.
