I am currently using windows 7 and i am thinking about upgrading to win10, but i fear that i might have compatibility problems with "old" games (llike Skyrim).

So i wanted to ask if anyone here have been in my situation and if Skyrim ended up running better or worst or had some headaches to make it work, etc

Thanks

I've had no windows 10 related problems so far and I've gotten it since it was out. So you should be safe :)

A nice bonus is the new windows gaming bar (hit win+G) with which you can record your screen.

Skyrim forum in Steam has gained mixed responses from Win10. Some player say that they never encountered any problems with it. Others can't seem to get them work together at all.

Cfs111 made a guide about fixes, based on information forum had gathered. There is a very good change that Skyrim will behave just fine, if you move to Win10. If not, then check out the guide for recommended settings that should deal with issues.

Let's assume that you've upgraded to 10 and now you have issues with your computer and/or with your games. So, was it worth it? Probably not, then as they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you really truly want Win 10 (aka the botnet) then save it for your next computer.

I heard at the end of July they are going to charge for Win10, a guy I know told me too wait till about then to make a decision on upgrading if my games and software for school are working fine why mess with it.

I had a lot of issues when my computer upgraded to windows 10 on its own. I found some older SKSE plugins would not work, had to play with the compatibility settings and admin rights for it an the CK, had to reinstall several things from Microsoft and if I tab out of the game it sometimes will not be able to get back into it and Skyrim crashes. I had some issues with the CK, primarily with moving dialogue between topics (crashes). I will say that the CK loads faster but I don't see much of a difference on Skyrim.

i recently upgraded to windows 10 ..... like 3 days back ....... the problem i faced was with enb ....skyrim started crashing on startup .. i got around that by updating to end user runtime 2010...for me  the enb works now but sweetfx is still a no go...if you google windows 10 compatibility with enb you'll find some cases ...... for some it worked without any problem .

I did a clean install of windows 10 and re-installed Skyrim plus mods. The game runs great but I couldn't run the ck. After some searching on the internet I came accross an article which placed the blame for that on AVG antivirus.  I disabled AVG and lo and behold the ck works now. Have since then removed AVG and installed panda antivirus. Things now work like they should. One thing I did notice is that load times seem to be greatly reduced.

The only issue I'm having is that I'm limited to 4gb of vram on a GPU that's supposed to have 6. Skyrim is a DX9 game, and Microsoft dropped support for it completely, which puts a cap on how much vram a game on such an old platform can tap into. It will likely never be fixed, and I doubt Nvidia/ATI will provide a patch either. Only solution is to dual boot into Win 7, since 8.1 also has this problem.

Skyrin is a 32bit game. it cannot address over 4GB

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/863242/geforce-drivers/-request-remove-4gb-limit-of-vram-for-dx9-games/

Please, tell me more...

If you read on down the page you will see - A 32 bit program uses Intel's Physical Address Extensions to address more than the 4 GB direct limit. Before being allowed to do that though, Windows insists on Data Execution Prevention as a prophylactic to either faulty or malicious programming affecting running apps or even the system itself. Windows will automatically enforce DEP whenever it detects the Execution Disable Bit is set in BIOS.

That means IF AN APP OR GAME IS NOT CODED FOR OR COMPATIBLE WITH DEP then 4 GB is all that can be allocated.

The default setting for DEP when Windows is installed is Turn On DEP for essential Windows programs and services only, assuming all else is straight - forward 32-bit.

Windows provides the framework for accessing the extra Ram. My 8-bit Commodore 64 could only address 64 kb or 2^16=65536 using 2 bytes for addressing

2^32 =4,294,967,296 or 4 Gb.

As far as I know Skyrim can only address 3.1 GB of Ram (not including VRam). I have had the task manager open when playing and watched it crash when it hit 3.1 GB. I think there are mods which can change this but 3.1 GB is its native limit.

Out of curiosity for those that also have win10 are you launching skse with compatibility turned on/off? and if on compatibility for what?

Currently have mine set as on and win 7 although whether it works any better or just a placebo i've no clue

According to cfs111's guide and conversation in Steam, compatibility mode is not required for clean Win10 install.

It may be required, if you upgraded earlier version of Windows to Windows 10 and game is acting up.

Well, i think i have testimonies on both sides.

Guess i will keep Win7 till i have no other choice but to change to win10. When (if) that moment arrives i will deal with any trouble i might get, but for now i will stick with what i know it works

Thanks a lot for the feedback!
