Jerbsinator Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 For me after playing Skyrim I can never ever EVER go back to Oblivion, at least not the main part. The only reason I ever use Oblivion anymore is if I wanna fap or whatever. (Don't mock, you know you do it too ) So I'm wondering, does anyone else actually prefer the main storyline / gameplay of Oblivion over Skyrim's, and why do you feel that way?
guilmonex Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I still have a lot of mods haven't tried yet, so I go back to oblivion from time to time.
Glugg Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 After playing Skyrim, I can't imagine seriously going back to Oblivion. Skyrim is far from perfect, of course, but the world in general feels more fully realized and alive. Oblivion just seems dated in comparison. As ever more impressive Skyrim mods start showing up, the gap is only going to widen.
gregathit Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I don't mind taking a break from skyrim to cause a little havoc in Oblivion. Besides FNV where else can you "get it on" in game. I may abandon Oblivion for skyrim once a working lovers type system is stable and has some options but until then...
GrimReaper Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Tbh, I haven't played Oblivion for years now, at least not seriously. I do sometimes make a new character, do some stuff but I lose motivation pretty quickly.
quasimodo75 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I still play Oblivion, simply because I feel at home in this alternative reality. I even haven´t been to the Shivering Isles seriously. Then there is that great Elsweyr PI and sooo much more. Besides, I don´t like the way they are forcing gamers to use Steam when installing Skyrim.
Silk Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I still play Oblivion as I do like the world and exploring, and the Lovers mods just make it that bit more interesting when im bored. I will likely abandon it, like greg, when we get a similar system for Skyrim.
Nepro Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I don't have laptop powerful enough to handle Skyrim at not so powerful to set high resolution and other features on and high. I play Oblivion like crazy since fall 2011. Just look at my xfire profile http://www.xfire.com/profile/zelazko89/ I've have at least 300 hours spent playing Oblivion since 2011. The only reason I ever use Oblivion anymore is if I wanna fap or whatever. (Don't mock, you know you do it too As far as I know there are some sex mods too.
ElvenScoundrel Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Skyrim bores me. It doesn't have much replayability, and I don't think mods will help, either. It's a pretty boring landscape of some plains and a whole lot of mountains covered in cocaine, and the occasional dragon. When I play Skyrim, I mostly just wander around aimlessly, not really sure what to do. It doesn't feel as fullfilling as Oblivion, IMO. It definitely did some things right, but it feels weird. It's so desaturated, too... why is the game so colourless and gray?!
Nepro Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 why is the game so colourless and gray?! There are mountains, winter, villages, whores and nothing more. that's why.
4xgd Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Better graphics doesn't mean to make games better than the prequels - same goes for Skyrim. Way to easy, even on hardest difficulty, less options to stat my characters in a unique way, less options of spells or even no option to make my own spells and of course the missing mods for eyecandy. I stay with Oblivion.
Surenas Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 I play it since release in spring 2006 with quarterly or half-yearly breaks after finishing. It's always the same WE char without any facial upgrades since the beginning. It's kinda like visiting a virtual daughter. Moms do that.
DogOnPorch Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Oblivion is great due to all the attention it has been given from dedicated modders.
Symon Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Daggerfall: The game that set the bar. Morrowind: Things were added and things were taken away. On the whole, the result was a good game. Replace the meshes and textures and it is still a superb game, that has elements that leave Oblivion and Skyrim for dust. Still played by many people. Oblivion: Things were added and many things were taken away. On the whole, the result was a poor game that could be modded to be a good game. Still played by many people. Skyrim: Graphics were added and many things were taken away. On, the whole, the result seems to be a poor game. The jury is still out if mods will make it a good game.
Kodiak Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Right now? No, but its mainly because I havent reinstalled it after my most hard drive wipe. Skyrim is great as a serious game, but with Lovers and other certain mods for Oblivion, they are two differnet creatures for me, even if its only the differnece between Skyrim being more serious and Obliivon being Porn-tastic. Its not that I wouldnt play Oblivion, I just don't feel lke spending the hours it will take to get my data folder back to where it once was.
Jerbsinator Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 How is Skyrim a poor game? I bought it with low expectations but it blew those away. Oblivion isn't even close to as good as Skyrim, even with mods. Once Skyrim gets some overhauls it's going to destroy Oblivion in every way. Yes Skyrim has it's flaws but overall it's a huge step up from Oblivion, which IMO is a failure of a game on a purely vanilla standpoint. And personally I couldn't get into Morrowind, the animations and graphics are just painful, even with high res texture mods. Not that I am a graphics whore, I enjoy playing old games but Morrowind just didn't jive with me. Also the combat system is slightly better than Runescape combat...
Symon Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 To me. a game is good if people talk about how good the overall scenario is. I've heard no one wax lyrical about Skyrim's quests. This says it all to me. To be fair, I haven't been impressed by a game 'out of the box' for a very long time.
Ghoulz Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Heh, I'm going to be busy with Oblivion for quite a while, considering im still stuck creating characters and adding even more junk, so I haven't even touched the Quests yet.
tomfoolery Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Every now and then, yes. Buy not as much as I used to. Despite Skyrim's flaws, I'm enjoying it way more than Oblivion. Once a proper sex mod for Skyrim comes along, I may stop playing.
Iris86 Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 i still play oblivion, now more than ever, i still play morrowind tough, and now that have dagerfall and redguard adventures, i'm submerged to the neck in elder scrolls stuff, and some friends are asking for designs and other stuff for a youtube animated series, so i use some elder scrolls stuff as inspiration, specially those mods that make the game way better, my cyrodil?, hahaha, can go everywhere, i'm not stuck on ellsweyr anymore, i can go to valenwood, morrowind, skyrim, vvaderfell, mournhold, solsteim, i will take a looong time to explore everything, as for oblivion, i have my very own ideas on what to do with my free time, what do you think? an animated series based on elder scrolls oblivion already modded, i of course will add to the story some mods i like, trying to hide as much as i can the XXX part of CLS and SM of Chorrol, and i'll include cameos of famous characters like Draco Wrath "Lord of the Dance" from Let's play oblivion and my favorite fishface Nord Nondrik, and of course the main char Bendu Olo will be accompanied to some extent by Vilja, Viconia & other famous companions, i wanted to do this with my friends, but they are way too busy so i will only use their recorded voices and my own talents to animate... and again i went on and on rambling about "secret" stuff, oh well, better to let you guys know before i even upload the first episode, that thanks to YT whatever it is, i will not have to cut it in 3 parts but upload the full thing
Siouliusn Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 No; but only beacause I had to upgrade to 7 and really don't feel enough motivate motivated to reinstall Oblivion even if I had a nice collection of converted/customized """"armor"""". But I might retry it someday since I don't really play Skyrim anyway. (TOR and DAO are quiet time consuming)
Narsdarknest Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 Heh' date=' I'm going to be busy with Oblivion for quite a while, considering im still stuck creating characters and adding even more junk, so I haven't even touched the Quests yet. [/quote'] It happens the same xD I have not even bought Skyrim because before but both wanted to play oblivion mods try me be late a lot in the main story and every time I play back a clean save from the ground

[/quote']Because even with mods, there's LESS content. Radiant Quest system doesn't add much, the world isn't really that big and there's no real reward in exploring, the game's colourless, combat is quick, sudden and boring, NPCs still feel lifeless, less armor so less mix & match, less weapon types, small amount of shouts, some quite useless, dragons are a bore to fight, etc. It feels more of a simulationist fantasy game than what Morrowind or Oblivion were, really. Both had this obvious fantasy feel to them, Skyrim feels too real for me to really enjoy. Sure, Oblivion is a shit game, vanilla-wise, but with mods, it's fun. I don't think I can say the same for Skyrim. It's just dull. My main is level 45, I just finished the Thieves Guild quest, almost finishing the Companions quest, but I don't feel much incentive to go back and keep playing it. Heck, I'm only doing it 'cause of Trophies (I'm playing it on the PS3, even though I have it on PC). It's... I dunno, too simple for my tastes. There's something whimsical about Morrowind and Oblivion, and Morrowind is still kinda serious-like when you think about it. Plus, Skyrim graphically might look stunning, but it's boring, visually. Armors look silly (then again, Oblivion's armors look horrible too), and the land of Skyrim is nothing but mountains and snow, and doesn't make for a very fun land to explore. Even Morrowind's Vvardenfell had so much variety on such a relatively small piece of land, Skyrim just fails to deliver. Going from swamps to ashlands, to steppes to beaches was pretty fun. Don't get me wrong, it did MANY things right, but meh.

Don't get me wrong, it did MANY things right, but meh. You find Skyrims environment more boring than Oblivions? Wow that is hard to believe...Oblivion is pretty much the same thing the whole game, including dungeons. It's variety of environments is pathetic compared to Skyrim. Now granted Skyrim is a lot darker and a little more bland, but I like that. Also Skyrims environment may not be as big as it seems but it is bigger than Oblivions, and it actually has different scenery, instead of the same damn thing in every area. Even with FCOM Convergence, which adds thousands of items and hundreds of enemies it still doesn't fix the core problem of Oblivion which is a bad combat system that is very bland. Deadly Reflex fixes this a bit but it's still flawed and why I can't go back. Now sure Skyrims combat isn't much different but there's just something about it that I like. I think it's because the animations are pretty damn good for being made by Bethesda and they just feel more fluid than they did in Oblivion. I agree about dragons though, my first playthrough it was exhilarating for a while but by level 40 I was destroying them. Deadly Dragons fixed that though so it's not really a relevant issue for me anymore. The only thing that really sucks about Skyrim is there is not nearly enough quests in the Guilds. 5 - 6 quests is a real shame and I was disappointed by that. They somewhat make up for it with long dungeons that actually have some variety, but that doesn't really make up for the small amount of things you have to do to become the master of that guild.
