What's our universe called?

This was just on my mind earlier and what better place to ask here... On a adult modding forum...

The universe consists of everything that we possibly can imagine or ever can think of to exist. But does it have a name?

Like our galaxy the Milky Way, or the Andromeda galaxy that will inevitably merge with us, to the black hole slowly pulling us in known as Sagittarius A.

But, does our universe have a specific name, or does it depend on the possible theory that there are multiple universes that we'll have to identify them with unique names... If that time comes.

It would just be the Universe, even if others were conclusively proven to exist ( )

Just as our moon is The Moon (as dictated by the IAU).

Boring perhaps.

Nope.

It does not depend on that theory at all.

When we get better telescopes, and move about space more, and see more of the universe than we can now, that becomes the observable universe - the map expands.

If, and only if, our "universe" is discovered to have its own definite partition, like a planet, or a galaxy, or a galaxy cluster, and we confirm that there are other "universes" with different properties, then our universe will have a name - but it will also no longer be called a "universe", it will be called something else, e.g "Terra A".

If we simply discover more and more of the universe with the same properties, and never find a different place with different laws of physics, and never confirm multiverses, then we will never have a name for the observable universe because it has no definite partition and it is ever expanding.

I like to imagine an analogy where I live on a boat and have never seen land before - the universe, i.e the observable universe, would be everything I can see, from water to the sky to the end of the horizon to my boat to everything below I can see and everything above I can see.

But when I stand on the highest sail of my boat, my horizon is bigger, and I can see more. Then, that becomes my universe, and what I saw standing on the bottom of the boat is just a part of it.

Finally, when I hit land, I suddenly realize that the ocean is not the only type of world - now, I have struck land. Then, I no longer call it the universe. I give this new physical form to me, and the previous ones, names. I now call the body of water, which is my home, "ocean", and this new physical property, "land", and my universe is now the ocean and the land together.

there Be "universe A" and "Universe 1" hopfully the other universe is good at naming things cause we suck.

Well done, I can't stop laughing. At least people still have a sense of humor, thanks for that :D

This is what I was asking, I know about the observable universe. I was asking outside the bubble of the universe where everything we're skeptical about. But thank you for your thoughts.

So is it safe to say that we should put all arguements aside, and assume that we're basing this thread off of theoretical astro-physics and such?

If so, I think the thread should be more like "What would you name our universe, and why?"

If so, I think our universe should be known as "Tardigrade". Why? it is the longest living, most resilient species known to science. They can live in the vacuum of space on the shell of a spacecraft. They can live for hundreds of years without water.

Who knows, they may even be intelligent!

A specie who can survive hundreds of years without water and in the vacuum of space, is either very intelligent, or just very dumb.

It's like the Orcs in Warhammer 40K. When they paint their vehicles red, they go faster. And we all know Orcs aren't the smartest around, but it works, Their vehicles goes faster!

We already do give names to different universes, so to speak. Our own numerical conception of time is just that, a way to name the universe at a given time of the day. Cause the universe at 8:10 is not the same as the universe at 8:30, hence the 8:10 universe and the 8:30 universe. It's Time buddy, as long as we can't actually observe other "dimensions" evolving at the exact same time as ours.

orcs uses a thing called the WAAGH! ( gestalt psychic field) they believe red goes faster that strongly the WAAGH makes it so. they can also make things that dont work, work with the WAAGH, things with out bullets shoot. and lunch them selfs with a catapul and live cause they belive they can.

If there are multiple universes, similar to each other or different, then we'd have to find a new term to describe what we now call a universe, as "the" universe would have to include those multiple smaller universes as well, which, I think, doesn't make much sense. What I mean is, there's only one "universe" and it's called the universe.

Posted

It is only 'the universe' because we have no decisive or visible proof of other universes. I'm sure we'll name our universe something idiotic and unimaginative when we find another universe - then we'll give that one a cool sounding codename.

Once you start thinking quantum, the whole concept of reality becomes a mess. Every day an infinite number of universes is born. And dies. And then again.

The existence of a Multiverse (multiple universes) hasnt been proved, and I dont even know if it can be proven. Different universe could have different laws of physics or even magic, so theres no way we could prove the existence of those using our laws of physics and the science we know unless it was by accident. If they exist we can prove the exitence of the universes with our laws of phisics but its posible that they are minory, but they could also be the majority.

If youre talking about timeline universes theyare even harder to prove.

But supposing there is a multiverse and some of them have different laws of physics, ours should be called "The one  nothing interesting happens", because we dont have superhumans, magic or futuristic tecnologies (yet).

why not to answear seriously !!!

only mathematicien and physicien working on multiuniverse can give you a name   i think it is  ' gama ' but not sure.

as for astronoms and us are calling it just universe  .     A main reason to this is because the visible light did not pass beyond  our universe  and without any light we can not see further.

(it is the only way to mesure the size of it and determine it's age  )

i can not imagine yet the age distance of 13x10*9 light years  to imagine multiuniverse existance .   if such thing existe (why not !) i would not know about it  within my life existance.

and untill a new discovery the universe will keep it name

ps : but if you like better you can call it MARIA or what ever  ( not sure that everyone agrees  but who cares )

no it has no name.

only galaxies have names we are in the MILKY way

closest galaxy to us is called Andromeda

and that's all I know ...

There are more stars in the known universe (what we can see) than all the grains of sand on Earth gives you a picture of how insignificant we are :) That's why we hang out on a adult modding forum because we MATTER!!! :)

It's called... uhhh... "Bob"

It looks like a "Bob" doesn't it?

Schrodinger's Box man...

For any given number of ideas, each possibility coexist simultaneously thus creating an infinite number of universes in constant motion.

We travel between them with each instant of time thanks to the choices which are made

But what do we call the tachyonic/dark matter universe with which we share a parabolic energy exchange that has been mistaken for 'The Big Bang'...? Sorry, sometimes I forget no one else has read my Unified Field Theory.
