Let's talk about Player Homes

Recommended Posts

Mod dependency rabbit holes, mod needs x to function which requires y and y is dependent on z, ect. Improper use of Inn keyword - having your followers react to your house as though it's a tavern is irritating.  Unwanted NPCs that are difficult or impossible to cull - looking at you BBLS.  At a certain point it becomes difficult to love any house provided by the game or mods and I revert to The Manipulator while being a guild bum.

Think I found my ideal skyrim player home.

That is a great little home I have used for some time.

The children's room can be changed to a followers room although it is a bit small with 3 beds stuffed in it.

Not that modders will pay attention to this, but here are some of the things I HATE about most player homes on the Nexus:

  1. Too big. I don't want to go through fifty fucking load doors just to get around the house!
  2. Smelter and forge inside a house. WTF? Who has a smelter in their house? Even in a castle, the forge is outside in the yard.
  3. Too much clutter in too small a space. I've had to uninstall so many player homes, because they just had too much useless crap laying around.
  4. Bad lighting. I've had to either completely redo the lighting, or just outright uninstall so many mods, because you cant' see a damn thing inside the house.
  5. 99.9% of "Castle" mods. See #1. They're too fucking big! You're not going to be housing half of Skyrim's population in your player home. At most, you need quarters for yourself and your family, four spare bedrooms for your favorite followers, and a barracks that's located OUTSIDE the castle to house any guards you might have. I'm pretty sure most of the people making these mods have never seen a Castle, or even bothered to read up on how they were designed.
  6. Scripts. I don't need, or want any additional scripts for a player home.
  7. Clutter that isn't static. No. I'm not picking all that shit up and putting it back on the shelves/tables after it goes flying.
  8. Massive rooms containing nothing but mannequins, chests, and display cases. No thanks!
  9. Bad navmesh. If my followers can't go inside/walk around inside, then what good is it? Unless I really like your mod, I'm not making my own navmesh just to use it.
  10. NPCs included with the house. A lot of them don't even have proper facegen. If I want npcs in a house, I'll put my own in it.
  11. Bards. I hate Skyrim's bards, and I certainly don't want one in my house.
  12. Teleport spells. Seriously, that's just lazy.
  13. Tiny houses/towers that have unbelievably enormous interiors. *Facepalm*

So much everything on this list.

One thing I wish modders made more often: NON-home mods which replace vanilla homes entirely! I never use the damn things! Even if I did I don't need a house in every damn city!

Breezehome has (IIRC) 2-3 alternate uses, but Honeyside, Vlindrel Hall, and Hjerim desperately need other things which use those spaces, and Proudspire Manor's only real replacement is a marketplace which puts a big hole there (I like it, actually, when combined with mods that increase Solitude's size, but more options is good!)

Proudspire Manor's

The only reason I ever buy that one is to get Jordis.

It pisses me off that you can have Lydia without buying Breezehome, but every other housekarl requires investing in real estate.

For me houses have to be big for me and followers. As I love the mod lets dance again. I park my prettiest followers there and when bored I visit my mansion.

However this is prolly the prettiest player home I ever had.

I deleted it however due bad lag I think or other reason I dont remember. I had a slower pc those days hmm I should try it again.

Big homes - take a look.

Hearthfire Housecarls are not tied to the houses that they are supposed to guard.

Nobody cares about them. I don't care about them so much I forgot they existed.

Crafting stations....who needs all that crap in every single freaking house, or any house with all the equipment scattered around every location visited.

I was playing Wartimes in my last game and those guys even included a full smithy in the basement...Why?

That asshat called Father is such a psycho you never get time to use it and what exactly would you make anyway?

Every home does not need 15 kids beds, an Olympic size swimming pool, a complete smithy/enchanting/alchemy installation, 150 mannequins, so on and so forth.

It gets tiresome just trying to use a home while not needing all that jazz.

The favourite of mine is Riverside Lodge (Followers Edition). Not too large, not too cramped, not too empty, not too cluttered, has all the crafting stations and a wonderful cave.

I guess it really comes down to what do you want from a player home. To me that is actually bloody huge, it has like 15 rooms with 5+ beds. Makes me wonder how much time people really spends in these cells. I only need a cell that I set to safe in Dangerous Nights with a chest that doesn't reset so I can throw in some junk and a bed where I sleep. That's it.

I understand that many people use these big houses for a place to make screenshots or store their harems, but I am not sure if they are practical for general use.

But here are two examples for what I said earlier how my Lairs mod is modular, and you can just tweak them to your liking. Made these to a simple merc/adventurer theme. (Ignore the bloodstain on the 2nd one, that's a leftover from an earlier graverobber design, forgot to remove that XD )

Back in yonder days, when I still strived for "immersive" and "realistic" I made a full 600+ hour playthrough, completing every single faction and major questlines, all major quests and everything in DLCs. I used Deus Mons as my go-to main house since it felt fitting for a character of that status. I filled it up with followers via MHiYH, mannequins with all the fancy armor sets I found and display racks full of weapons. The whole thing actually felt like a proper manor with servants, minions, children, animals and pets. And I did spend a lot of time inside, just chilling or RP-ing or crafting (no AddItemMenu, everything had to be made by me or it had no place in that run).

Then I discovered SL and Devious Devices and my character turned into a complete and utter slut overnight. All that "immersion and "realistic" went out the window faster than Nazeem saying "Do you get to Cloud District very often?"

What did you use, the Camping system to drop the tent?

Never thought of that....

That's just a static tent mesh I put there in CK, but you can use the mod "Campfire" to put down tents outdoors and even a bedroll if you are indoors if I recall.

Campfire exists.

I have never used it despite having it installed on occasion, I don't use needs and diseases, or cold mods, tried survival, too much of a pain in the A at level 0 where to get the septims to pay the fees other than cheat them in, then when finally enough had the dude would not co operate.

I was told not to sell you...blah, blah, blah.

Anyway....

I use Blackthorn, nice little town.

Riverwood keep is too large for my tastes, I tried it, even with the patch I had the floating boulder issue.

My biggest issue with that whole line of well built mods is the sheer size of the "Home", doesn't feel like a home, , always felt like they detract from the game as, for me, they are bigger than most towns & rival Solitude for cost of construction, how does one start the game at level 0 and be a lord equal to any hold in Skyrim because untill you get the 60,000. septims to buy it, it is just a stone.

I like a large home but, I also have a shit ton of followers so it fills up fast never seen the floating bolder thing. I use LE and do not mod riverwwod so maybe that is why I never seen it. I start the game at around level 60 so making money is not hard and in today's market 60,000 is chump change for a house.

Facing the stairs with the bridge to your left, the stable to the right is where the land is changed, the path there is where the land sometimes does not change leaving some floating boulders.

Can I ask...does the game get weird when you have so many followers in one location, mine does. Frame rates, and ctd's occur for me when I have more than 5 or 6 followers in Skyfall Estate which has way to many mannequins, but a big area for followers in the basement and sub basement.

The only reason I keep it is the auto sort/use function for smithing/crafting things so I don't have to have the items equipped to use them except potions like smithing potion to raise the upgrade of the item. (damn my brain is not working right this morning, can't use the words I really want to say) must need more coffee!!

No I worked my game over and tweaked it to hell and back also I always change my followers skin to what I use. Having so many textures always causes issues I have every setting maxed out and frame rates lock in at 58fps. as for mannequins i delete those from the start way to many issues with those.

here is what most if not all npc look like in my game well as background view. Have not played in a while modded the shit out of my game and been testing getting ready to do a hardcore playthough going with level 81 as a start level 1 stats... most if not all the game map/world is stable and no CTD.
