What do you HATE MOST about VANILLA Skyrim?

Guest

Vanilla Skyrim things most players hate (According to people I talk to and Google).

  1. 1. Which is your pick?

    • Game-breaking bugs and glitches. (Oh, you're wanting to find out how to kill Alduin, but you can't because Delphine won't pull out a torch to light a brazier? Too bad, loser!)
      25
    • Broken/bizarre physics and other game mechanics. (A horse being able to stand parallel with a mountain like a Naruto character, for example)
      0
    • Ugly character textures. (Where characters look like they're from the PS2 era. No offense, PS2)
      16
    • Too many boring side quests. (I don't care that you lost your stupid family artifact! That's your fucking problem! I'll only get 20 gold for it, anyway! What the fuck can I do with 20 gold?!)
      8
    • Being remade and released 10 times with practically nothing new, save for a nigh-unnoticeable "upgrade". (Oh. You can fish now? I don't... really care. I'm not spending $30 for that)
      31
    • Crappy rewards (A shitty enchanted sword for risking my life to find a stupid artifact in an ancient dungeon full of things that want to murder me? Fuck you!)
      7
    • Anything else I can't think of right now (Please feel free to comment!)

My main problems with skyrim are lore based.

Shalidor fortress of ice isnt in game or even referenced (it was important part of arena main quest and pretty important in old lore)

Nordic old religion was replaced by imperial one

Shalidor almost isnt mentioned

the stormcloaks fight for talos a imperial god that has no nordic origin and they talk about woirsippping him as the true nord way

The cretinous comments when approaching an NPC

e.g : You get to Riverwood and they say, " Are you looking for work?" " Why don't you bring me all the wood you can get?"

Since when in an unknown country , do people stick their noses into our business?
Who said we are looking for work?
Why don't you chop wood?

Sleeping Giant Inn

Delphine : " You are the foreigner who is snooping around."

What do you want bitch ? We just got here, they tried to cut off our heads .

Biggest disappointments were probably lack of werewolf content, faction quests that were too rushed, excessive use of quest markers etc. I'm one of the few who have discovered the elder scrolls first through Morrowind, then Oblivion and then Skyrim. Getting a quest from somebody in Morrowind and then spending the next 15 mins deciphering where exactly I need to go was tedious but it was fun and very rewarding at the end. For those who have never played Morrowind, there was no quest markers. You had to basically consult your journey all the time and the clues were some shit like, go to this cave which is southwest of this river which is northeast of this town which is slightly east of a random ass sign in the middle of buttfuck nowhere that faces south to a valley that you should not go to and if you reach a daedric ruin then you went too far lmao.

It was hell but damn it was fun. If Bethesda helped the guys who were re-making Morrowind in Skyrim's engine then it would've been completely fine to play that while waiting for the elder scrolls 6 to drop in the next couple of centuries.

I know, right? I hate it when I'm just walking about and some random fucker just starts saying random shit to me. Also, why would I chop wood for some random ass villager? I have better things to do, like saving the world.

I suppose one way to look at it, though no less jarring, is that there is a bit of "on the rails" aspect to the main game quest locations, which is really weird in a free for all open world type game.  At least with Serana's tomb, the place is blocked up and the game has no mechanic or player expectation that you can / would go excavating. When you do return / first visit the cave, that work has been done by the vampires and the Vigilant and there is no plot hole of someone else sneaking in.

I'd argue that the idea of putting something impassible in the player's way is the better option. Since it means that barring the use of the console. players can't access content earlier than intended.

One of the mods I'm working on involves a new worldspace, and of course, a dungeon's exterior that the player will be able to access potentially before the related quest or faction is met. But as mentioned, there is a barrier which can't be bypassed.

Spoiler

But for Ustengrav, the better option is fairly obvious - make the enemies only spawn once the relevant quest has started, and while the door is unlocked, the cave passage near the first group of enemies would be blocked, and of course, removed if the quest is at a certain stage. This being kind of similar to Dustman's Carin, etc.

But the fact that Delphine is somewhat paranoid and obstinate may make sense, the trap with that sort of character in an RPG, is that such a character can easily be written without any possible player choice in mind. Such as, Delphine's dialog almost never is about asking the PC's opinion, and even on the perhaps rare, 1% chance that she does, the answer you give changes nothing. This can make sense for the basis of her character, in that most often shes dealt with people at arms length - ensuring that she survives for another day, week, etc. But the moment she learns the PC is Dragonborn, and tells them she is a former Blade, that attitude for her character doesn't start ebbing off over time, and her character stays the same for the rest of the game - when she might see it as at least less likely that she'll be found by the Thalmor. Especially after she begins staying at Sky Haven Temple, AND, pending the player's actions, has a number of new Blades to defend the place.

So when she chooses to bring up the "issue" with Paarthunax, she sees it as a matter of survival again(which doesn't need her to think about the few millennia in which he could've taken Alduin's place) - and obviously, the player has no choice in the matter. Also keep in mind that she, even if she supposedly has contacts for information, is the one NPC in the entire game who, knows nothing of at least the more public factions you've joined. So she could be not only telling, for example, a Dragonborn and Archmage to do something against their will, but someone where only one of those titles could easily mean that she and Esbern could be flung across the room, frozen, set on fire, etc - no matter if it's shouts or more direct magic.

Skyrim cracks me up sometimes.

Met 2 mages. Killed the first. Then I proceed to the next. Just before I decapitate him he says

"Just a Scratch"

Earlier Today I sacrificed a custom follower to Boethiah. 1 minute later as I returned to Windhelm a courier shows up.

I get a letter of Inheritance concerning the follower that was just sacrificed. 300 Septims and the Jarl took 30 of them.

Ha Fucking Ha!!!!

Just got attacked by Hired Thugs.

Seems like Vingalmo put out a bounty on me after he died at my hands in Volkihar Castle.

I stole everything after he died. But his Ghost was watching me.

Two men in Nordic Carved and a woman in Steel no less. Must have made an impression.

I laughed my ass off expecting it to be Arcadia when I stole her Herbalist book.

I love Morrowind and Oblivion. Best of all. 10 mods and You were set to go.

No installing 500 mods to make the game playable.

And why did they remove "Athletics" and "Acrobatics" and so many other magic effects from earlier games.

In Morrowind I have to complete a shit ton of quests just to advance in the Mages Guild.

You had so many factions to join.

I loathe the Cliff Racers though. Thank God for my "Bound Bow" and "Bound Spear".

Just wow, scary as hell. Who the fuck designed the facial expressions? By the way, Is the game really that varied in terms of ethnicity or this is a 9gagger collage?

You see all kinds of people. That is about as varied as it gets.

When You have been to 30 Science labs and 50 Military depots then it gets old.

The procedural landscape is kind of boring. Hope mods will save it. For now I have left it until Bethesda stops updating.

Few NPC's have something to say. The rest are just zombies, as You can see from the pics.

Stand close to them and it is even more scary. They are all just called "citizen". How generic could You be.

I was blown away in the start. But it got old really fast.

Like Vanilla Skyrim it needs a serious polish.

I'm no game developer, but I know that making games is hard. But come on. Bethesda's been doing this shit for decades. How are their games getting WORSE? I mean, I know why. Laziness, greed, etc. But at least pretend to give a fuck.

They can't fuck up Elder Scrolls 6. I will crucify them, if they fuck up that.

I tell You. The procedural landscape is so boring. Handcrafted areas are the way to go.

Some people from Morrowind / Oblivion must be alive. Bring them in and make it the game it deserves to be.

Then we modders will perfect it afterwards.

I mean the Starfield modding scene is already dying down. Skyrim SE has more mods coming out per day.

People can say what they will about Skyrim. I know that this thread is all about shitting on how flawed it is, but it's still a good game for what it provides. If anything, it's fun to mod the piss out of. But if they fuck up ES 6 (and I have little hope that they won't), it'll be the end of Bethesda.

If they do decide to bring back anyone from previous ES games, I would like to see the Nerevarine from Morrowind come back. Or maybe bring back Martin Septim as a spirit or something. That'd be kind of cool. Maybe make it where the player discovers a lost civilization of Snow Elves or Dwemer.

Yeah. A dwemer or Ayleid plot would be great. An expansion of Daedric lore would be perfect too.

Kind of wishing it will take place around the Illiac Bay area. I know Daggerfall already went there.

Maybe the Summerset Isles or Elsweyr. A wild hope would be Akavir.

Dreading if it is Blackmarsh or Valenwood.

But I am almost sure that the Thalmor will be involved again. That makes Hammerfell or Elsweyr very likely.

I heard it's going to be Hammerfell.

Is it just me, or does the whole Thalmor thing seem more like a needless distraction rather than something relevant to the ES plot?

I mean. They invented this Thalmor threat in Skyrim.

Not like the Dwemer, Ayleid or Daedra which were involved in previous games and part of the established lore.

The Thalmor never really did anything for me.

Other than my current Redguard character who hates the Thalmor/Empire with a passion after being left to fight alone in Hammerfell by the Empire.

But they really can't compare to Daedra or the Dwemer.

And they face a supernatural Dragon Breathing/Shouting character. How can ordinary Elves do anything to the Dragonborn?

In Morrowind and Oblivion the main character was essentially ordinary compared to the Dragonborn.

Wonder if the Dragonborn will be involved in ES6 too?? - It has to compare somewhat to the experience in Skyrim. Tough to beat...

Agreed. I mean, the Thalmor just walk around and talk shit. That's all they do.

Most things written by Emil Pagliarulo. For that matter, the way that many things in the game do not account for other quests due to the complete lack of a cohesive design vision, the worst cases being how the dialogue in the Thieves Guild quest assumes that the main character has never done anything heroic or selfless before in a game that enables one's chronic hero syndrome to run unabated and the Companions which operates under the presumption that one's character always enters the guild as a total nobody when they may be a legate of the Imperial Legion and/or the Arch-Mage of the College of Winterhold.

This person goes into depth about what is one of the recurring worst elements of BGS games as a whole.

This game is good, but there's no denying it could have been so much better if Bethesda had put more effort into it. I mean, I know making this shit is hard, but there are games that I played ten years prior to playing Skyrim that were way better in terms of gameplay, mechanics, and design.
