rawr22
I have spent so many hours researching and testing mods to try and get a stable version of a modded Skyrim, but here I am yet again about to nuke yet another install and another save game due to CTDs. I think I use best practices; new saves, bashed patch, BOSS, cleaned .esps, etc. Has anyone with more than a few mods been able to get Skyrim to stay stable for any length of time? If so what is your mod list? Do you think it would be possible to compile a community 'safe' list? Link to comment
johnnyboy88
There already is a guide. http://wiki.step-project.com Link to comment
kolbjorn
I played about 1/4 of the game without mods. And it CTDed a couple of times for no discernable reason. So keep in mind that the game could crash even without any mod. My current Skyrim setup has 100+ mods and manual edits. And I'm even surprised that is still working =) My advice: don't stack mods. Have just one per feature you want modded. For example, don't mix Deadly dragons with Dragon Combat Overhaul. Link to comment
Guest
My current build is pretty stable with 90 plugins, but I'm on the third of a recent spate of reinstalls so not taking it for granted it'll stay that way. I did a load of dirty edit cleans which may have helped. Having said that, I just recently had the dreaded infinite load at Whiterun and managed to resolve it with a 31 day wait and some interior hard saves and not had any problems since, touch wood. I don't follow STEP to the letter, not sure I totally agree with their purist philosophy tbh, but I have taken their advice to some extent this time around when it comes to mod install order, I think they're definitely onto something there. Scripts are usually the source of my woes. I've gone with just Skyre and Frostfall this time around, rather than a bunch of mods that do essentially the same things. Link to comment
dobmc
Skyrim just didn't get enough love to overcome it's challenges... Or it could be because Skyrim was made initially on the console. It just feels so backwards when a console game gets ported to the pc. Link to comment
Rayblue
Did a clean reinstall, but this time a big deal of replacers and half a dozen mods that are script driven but have been tested and confirmed for stability (i.e. Frostfall). Of course cleaning and BOSS-reordering has become a necessity. Link to comment
BSnake
I have about 250 mods in my load order, most of which are texture replacers and gameplay enhancements recommended by STEP, as well as armor/weapon/hair mods. My game runs stable for the most part, although the combination of high-res textures and my ENB preset tax my PC. I only use BOSS for discerning incompatibilities, preferring to set my load order manually while following suggestions from mods. Making sure that mods are compatible with one another is a no-brainer. As b3ast1e mentioned, script-intensive mods (ex. those that spawn additional enemies) are known to cause CTDs, especially if you have a weak PC. If you use ENBSeries, I recommend trying out the latest binaries since Boris implemented ENBoost for reduced memory usage. You might have to adapt your ENB preset based on how old of a binary you're currently using. Link to comment
dove-cosy-fad
My Skyrim works Rock stable. I just get CTDs, when I switch my mod profile, because then some mods overwrite others and I have to manually reorder them. I have like 130 *.esps/*.esm activated. I didn't followed any threads or suggestions. Just the fact that I only use the Mods I really need and that I only use one mods for one aspect of the game. Link to comment
Ailsa
I currently have 189 mods in my game and normally get a CTD after 5 or 6 hours of gameplay. I consider that to be very stable Link to comment
rawr22
I started with STEP, as suggested, but that guide has way more mods than I would ever consider installing, as while my FPS is fine with that many texture mods, load times suffer hugely. So again I create a new install with a few texture mods, armor mods, several fixes and patches, Skyre, Frostfall, and one or two NPC or quest mods taking care not to install something unless it's something I really don't like playing without and keeping script heavy mods to a minimum. Before you know it I'm up to 91 plugins, but most are popular and well tested. After about 6 hours of gameplay, no CTDs. Finally a stable install! Then for no reason with no changes I start getting CTDs every 5 minutes, randomly. Interiors, exteriors, loading, saving, doing nothing, it's completely random. There goes another save. I don't know how you guys do it. I never had such trouble with Oblivion, FO3, on NV. I'm tempted to give up on Skyrim for good and hope that Bethesda's next title does not keep script info in save games. /rant Link to comment
Madmartigan34
I NEVER crash indoors. My crashing in Skyrim always happens if I go outside and just start to wander on foot or horse. Its gotten to the point where i just COC around the map. Link to comment
有限な
I never CTD. I always check for incompatablities and that seems to do it for me. o_o Link to comment
Captain Cobra
Skyrim is the most stable Bethesda game I have, even though it's the most modded one. I've never have a CTD while during normal play. Then again, I've never used any of the endless wave of ENB mods, so that is probably why. Link to comment
Taskmaster
It's sometimes disheartening how unstable the game can be. I crash during play or infinite load at least 5 per day of playing(if I were to try and play like 4 hours or so on a given day). End up troubleshooting more than playing, and I have about 160 plugins, I think I might just shave that down to single digits. Link to comment
Sophisa
ENBoost works wonders, I can tell you that much - playing on my 3-ish year old laptop with graphics settings near max and a hundred and .... sixty-something mods? Can't recall off the top of my head. Had a fair bit of frame dropping, added ENBoost, game runs like a charm. Had one or two CTDs, so pruned the mod list a little, but they're very rare. Big thing is just to check out a mod before you install it, read the comment pages, see if there's any likely issues, and if there are, how to get around them or safely uninstall the mod (Claralux is a good example of this, avoid that thing like the plague) Link to comment
Mud
With over 200 mods, my Skyrim's just about the polar opposite of stable. Cities like Whiterun and certain towns like Ivarstead will freeze without fail if I try to run around outside while too many of the town's inhabitants are out and about, possibly because I'm using an NPC overhaul mod with fancy hair and all, necessitating the use of COC to warp to the facilities I need to access. Combat bears a chance of freezing in seemingly random places. A couple of dungeons, like Shroud Hearth Barrow or Raven Rock Mine, refuse to allow me entry via the front door, instead freezing or crashing, yet when I use COC to enter, the entire place is fine. Loading new environment objects when travelling on foot can cause freezes. When the game has a heavy load of stuff to... well, load, I could crash by opening my inventory, looting something, or simply trying to pause the game. Dustman's Cairn gets ridiculously crashy when I try to loot Silver Hand corpses. Radiant events could crash my game when they spawn. The Bannered Mare and Bee and Barb have a penchant for crashing when I enter for some reason. The list goes on. Just about the only silver lining is that dungeon delving, beyond that issue with a handful of them, is largely smooth and error-free. Link to comment
s.eden
CTD and Memory patch ENBoostIn case, this one does help quite a bit as to smoothering the game up.Then, they are some options as to Ingame change to .ini and others configuration settings (using Skyrim Configuration Menu for example). As to a stable "mega" mod, the way to go is almost always the same, with some twists.A tool like TES5Edit is quite mandatory, as to merge & trial (as example, there will be quite some mods making changes to the same NPC, so, as to adress conflicts (losing one important part, this said, in some case, not having the dedicated hair/face given can be a sorry result). So, install all your selected mods (not the data : bsa & meshes/textures, yet).Run BOSS if some mods are not correctly set, make a correct report to the team. Then, time to merge, example : items.Select all the new item and merge them, of course, see to erase (not add to merged file) the npc/locations, this being seen later). When you have declutered your load order, it is time to see to manage theire file (which require you did see to keep the archives in a correct fashion (categories) beforehand). So, extract bsa and "merge" the files belonging to the now merged "categorie" esp.(Keep archive of the merged esp, if an update is done it will proove usefull). When the merges are dones (just merging items & "compatibility patchs" by category could be quite a large opening as to avalaible place).Take care not to merge to much (at last try to keep over a distinct type of content, even if your esp is small, as to compatibility..)Using WryeMash, it is then time to make a bashed file, mostly as to lists. At this point, TESC is needed.First, loading all the mods who make changes to the cells (quests, immersion, etc) and double check there are no conflict, if so, correct them all in a new customised "cell master" esp (who will be loaded after all theses mods of course). Of course, seeing to navpath is mandatory. When done, guess it depend of the selected mods, some have specific requirement, like quest being completed, locations discovered etc, so, going on a multi tiers mod add setup could be usefull. As to Skyrim himself, that 3GB max for data is prooving being quite worrysome. Still, if crashing upon loading (infinite), try to use fast travel, thus going without the previous data kept in memory (freeing space). I guess they are quite some others points to consider, for now, that should be alright as to a headstart.Oh, btw, do not merge skse & MCM mods ! Link to comment

Mostly just cosmetics, armour, sounds, better followers. It's not that hard to have a stable-ish modded game (I don't ctd often, but Whiterun loads pretty slowly, and going near blacksmiths causes a bit of stutter with SMIM, for example) so long as you pay attention to load order, don't use more than one thing that affects the same game element (meaning major elements like quests, sound, npcs, perks, combat ai, etc), use any compatibility patches needed, and be ready to uninstall things if they cause havoc. That said, something in this list plays a bit of havoc with starting a new game, so I always make sure to load from a save I made *just* before the creation menu comes up, which had no mods loaded at the time. rawr22
Xvision Children.esm ClimatesOfTamriel-Dungeons-Hazardous.esp dD - Enhanced Blood Main.esp I've had instability after installing Xvision, so I no longer play with that. I'm pretty sure Climates of Tamriel was the cause of a CTD I kept getting when the weather changed outside Windhelm as removing it stopped the crash. I'd like to play Enhanced Dark Brotherhood too but I removed that one just because of the huge amount of Papyrus spam. I'm glad their all stable for you, perhaps it was their interactions with other mods that caused problems for me. I've also noticed I seem to have more problems with later ENB versions with the memory management. I seem to CTD more often and my game stutters much more in exteriors (yes I have the correct settings). I have a much smoother and more reliable game with older versions pre memory management. I'd prefer to not use ENB at all but damn those vanilla shadows are so bad. My new build is as minimalistic as I can get it and I've not used a load of mods I really like in an attempt to get a stable game, seems stable for the most part so far, only played about 4 hours on new char so far though: Skyrim.esm Update.esm Dawnguard.esm HearthFires.esm Dragonborn.esm ApachiiHair.esm Ket_ARMONIZER_v2.esm Omegared99-Compilation.esm SPIKE.esm XFLMain.esm Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp Unofficial Hearthfire Patch.esp Unofficial Dragonborn Patch.esp Bijin Warmaidens UNP One esp.esp Serana.esp Chesko_Frostfall.esp enb_reference.esp RevampedExteriorFog.esp Blackout_Skyrim.esp Remove Interior Fog V2 - Full Version.esp StaticMeshImprovementMod.esp StaticMeshImprovementMod-DragonbornTernFix.esp StaticMeshImprovementMod-FurnitureChestSnowFix.esp GypsyEyesCaravan.esp Skyrim Immersive Creatures.esp Skyrim Immersive Creatures - DLC2.esp Auto Unequip Ammo.esp Character Creation Overhaul.esp RaceMenu.esp RaceMenuPlugin.esp UIExtensions.esp SkyUI.esp iHUD.esp AMB Glass Variants Lore.esp Cloaks.esp 1nivWICCloaksNoGuards.esp 1nivWICSkyCloaksPatch-NoGuards.esp DragonbornArmorFix.esp hothtrooper44_ArmorCompilation.esp Immersive Weapons.esp imp_helm.esp Omegared99-WeaponSets.esp SkyRe_Main.esp SkyRe_Main_Fix.esp SkyRe_Combat.esp SkyRe_CraftingFix.esp SkyRe_EnemyAI.esp SkyRe_EnemyScaling.esp SkyRe_EnemyScaling_Fix.esp SkyRe_StandingStones.esp SkyRe_StandingStones_Fix.esp SkyRe_Survivalism.esp SkyRe_SIC Crossbowfix.esp The Paarthurnax Dilemma.esp CorrectGenderAnimations.esp CorrectGenderAnimations-DG.esp CorrectGenderAnimations-DB.esp db-nightshade-replacer.esp Guard Dialogue Overhaul.esp Headtracking.esp Ket_ARMONIZER_LListsNPC.esp MF_RadiantProstitution.esp aMidianborn_Skyforge_Weapons.esp Apocalypse - The Spell Package.esp NoSneakAttackSound.esp Acquisitive Soul Gems.esp psikoticsnecromancy.esp vImmersiveBeds.esp 3DNPC.esp 3DNPCEFF.esp XFLConfig.esp XFLDialogue.esp XFLPanel.esp XFLPlugins.esp Alternate Start - Live Another Life.esp SkyRe_Races.esp SkyRe_Races_Fix.esp ENB Snow FX.esp WATER.esp WATER DG.esp WATER Plants.esp WATER DB.esp Bashed Patch, 0.esp Pre ReProccer IW aMidianSS IA Patch.esp ReProccer.esp qotsafans Books HF Patch.esp qotsafans Ingestibles HF Patch.esp Link to comment
Veladarius
Unfortunately even mods that are stable by themselves can be sabotaged by a single conflicting mod. Many mods work well together but sometimes a seemingly simple mod can step all over their toes and make them look bad. I have learned to figure out what is causing issues in my game because I add and remove mods constantly. Sometimes it breaks things to the point that I start a new game but I usually learn what works and what doesn't with the mods I already have. I think I am pushing my Skyrim game to the limit much of the time but I have been able to get more out of the game than I did before. I think one of my issues right now is with the newer series ENB causing problems with crashing on loading saves but without it my game would not look anywhere near as good as it does or run as fast. Once it is going it is fairly stable. Right now my mod list is light compared to my usual of maxed out (only 244 esm/esp's): GameMode=SkyrimSkyrim.esm=1Update.esm=1Dawnguard.esm=1HearthFires.esm=1Dragonborn.esm=1ApachiiHair.esm=1ApachiiHairFemales.esm=1ApachiiHairMales.esm=1Skyrim Project Optimization - IMO, Skyrim is the most delicate game ive ever played. Link to comment
sickzpack
My load order is pretty much the same as yours. But I don't use ENB's, my crappy pc can't handle em Link to comment
...0...
It depends on so many things, your PC your config, what your running in background, how many mods installed, size of all mods, mods that can work together or not. Have you updated all to latest versions(dont update if it works fine, unless there is realy something you want and need update)? Have you boss/edit all(also the unreconize seems many forget those to clean up) TEST all mods one by one if it couse crash problem. Have you format lately or is your OS and all installs year old? Is your PC a desktop or laptop is it a new one with latest tech or old one from 6 years ago, powerfull enough to run it all? So many reason where it can go wrong. I had many CTD crashes also but over time ive learn what my PC can handle and what mods work perfectly together also don't install to many mods. Its realy not that hard just readme if mod is competible with others and see if they work fine together. I have a highend PC from 1.5 year ago(ivybridge) with AMD 7970 and my game looks gorgeous and stable but i make sure mods all work together are cleaned up and not way to many installed. Also when i play i dont have to many other programs running in background. Good luck! P.S I use realvision(v215 stable)/hrk ENB-Cot-RLO-FloraOverhaul. Link to comment
...0...
Allso if posible install the data folders through NMM so you can if it couse problems easly uninstall it, other wise if you just copy past into data folder its hard to keep track of there go in what folder and remove it later. Name DATA folder as mod name and just install through NMM make it all much smoother avoid complications and frustrations later:) Link to comment
