I think it's due to the intensity of the light creating strong negative and positive space similar to a grey scale photo. That high intensity of creating strong negative and positive is called Chiaroscuro, high contrast between light and dark by which the light gives shapes volume and dimension. Big in the Renaissance period - still very applicable and appealing.

Chiaroscuro is a better way to describe it, but I think it is closer to the style of Tenebrism during the 17th century with Baroque art. Chiaroscuro captures form by adding value to light. This is more a play on violent light creating an intense dramatic effect. ...Meanwhile in Windhelm...
