Worst Death?

Been working on a mod that more accurately portrays fire damage in my game because enemies taking no notice of BEING ON FUCKING FIRE!!!! really bothers me. I mean.... it's painful to be set aflame and I know we can all relate because we've all been burned before. Not only that, it causes people to panic. The mind just goes into frenzy and the overriding priority is getting that shit dealt with.

 

However, while thinking about this... I couldn't help but wonder what burning alive even feels like? For some reason, I think drowning would be worse for me (something else most of us might have experienced). So now I'm curious and am asking: What's the worst possible way to die you think?

 

Please understand that I'm not making light of anyone's tragic situation if they are dying. You have my sympathies of course. This is more meant in an abstract way, one to be considered more from a gamer's perspective.

 

If the mods feel that this subject is too controversial, then I understand. ?

I think burning alive also means your nerves will "Probably" be dead before you are, so you will stop feeling it.. Think poorest of people who die form it die from suffocating because of the gases . So you kinda get the worst of two deaths ?

That said..

The classic is burning on a pyre.

However, as portrayed in most of the films... the victims suffocated (from the smoke) before they were seriously injured by the fire.

The inquisitors or the responsible executioners had to keep the fire very small so that suffocation did not set in first.

Strictly speaking, the person dies either from the pain (from the shock) when his feet slowly turn to coal - if he is "unlucky" he faints (pain shutdown in the brain).

In order for a person to actually die as a result of a fire from burns, you even have to extinguish the fire or get him out of the immediate flames ... (I won't go into this further here)

Where do you know something like that from... now as an engineer for the technical systems in the building, the field of "fire protection" is also part of it... how fire (and smoke) affects people are important basics for understanding certain things.

I remember an old Twilight Zone episode in which a guy is obsessed with killing bugs (hates them). But the tables turn somehow and he gets swarmed by cockroaches and eaten alive. That couldn't have been fun.

Like in the Mummy movie with brandon frasher, the something something Bugs eating their way under his skin and start eating that one guy..  I watched that film when I was a kid, I was scared shitless ?

And zombie movies (Pick one) where you get eaten, or just wounded and addicted to brains.

Or the middle ages covered this nicely, 

or switch to modern times (waterboarding) which isn't usually fatal (I proactively type) but then again...

That's what people in the "West" (i.e. Europe and North America) were most afraid of at the end of the 19th century...

That's why many things were invented or "tinkered" - such as small bell systems that led into the coffin and enabled the NON-dead waking up there to make themselves noticed ...

...or air tubes - so that they don't suffocate etc. etc.

At that time, the pathologists or undertakers could not examine whether there was only an "apparent death" instead of a real death...

..because feeling the pulse or heartbeat with your fingers is NOT enough.

Would you really wake up if you'r short from dying? I mean the whole point in suffocating or drowning is, that you lose consciousness before it really kills you.  It isn't pleasant and suffocating is probably one of the worst deaths possible and painful I am sure, but nah it's just that. Suffocating with an extra.

I would say starvation is worse than that.  You feel it for days until it finally kills you. You get mad by it also and start eating dirt and other stuff just to fill your belly and you'll still die from it. Thirst might be on the same level. But I'm a first world person, never felt hunger or thirst big enough to imagine dying by it.

Would have to agree about it being worse. I've been closer than I'd like a few times. Never suffocated... much.

almost drowned about 20 years ago while diving in the "Baltic Sea" at a depth of 50 meters...

..we tried to find a 100 meter long shipwreck - only from a depth of 30 meters the water was already black as night (at 12 noon and a cloudless sky!)

despite the very powerful diving lamp, visibility on the ground was less than 3-4 meters

from 35 meters creeping deep intoxication (due to the nitrogen in the compressed air)

I wanted to look for the ship down there - such a huge part must be somewhere - after all it was located by sonar from the diving ship and marked with a ground buoy.

only the current has moved this buoy and when we arrived as a 4th team of 2 - it was already at least 20 meters away from the ship's wall

I could have searched there for an hour and wouldn't have found anything - because I just didn't know in which direction I should have swim...

..and the deep rush eliminated all risk assessment factors...
...because for 1 min on the ground at least 5-10 min intermediate stop for the necessary decompression.

My exchange partner saved me - in other words, he forced me to "break off" the diving process and ascend together with him - another 5 minutes down there and there would not have been enough time for decompression in the bottle!

With a less experienced partner - he had 800 dives - over 150 of them at great depths - we would have swum around down there and...

Working on an oil rig jacked 30 m (about 100 ft.) off the sea with a hurricane coming in and rain already starting to fall in sheets, I and my crew were tasked with moving pipes from one location to another as quickly as we could as time was of the essence. I almost fell to my death (probably) one time and was almost crushed to death instantly by cargo that broke loose while moving it. I only dodged it at the last second they told me.

 

But to be honest.... those were good ways to die imo. Doing necessary dangerous work and having to be quick in reaction and reflexes to survive. But I would imagine that a great many people have died from inexperience and/or ignorance- never knowing what hit them.

 

Forgive a little bit of boasting and chest thumping there. I am proud of a few things I've handled in my life.
