KoolHndLuke Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Let's say you had to lose one. Which would it be and why? Getting older so all my senses are dulling and I kind of wonder about this stupid stuff, lol. For me it's a tough choice, but I would have to say smell. Seems most likely also since I've always had problems with my sinuses.

A life without hearing music or seeing, don't wanna imagine that.. On the plus site, it wouldn't matter that anymore what you eat?

Mr. Otaku Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Smell and it's a rather easy choice. Outside of the fact that i wouldn't be able to tell if something smells good or not i'd still retain all the other normal functions that are crucial for a normal life. Whereas losing either sight or hearing will put me in major disadvantages all the time and impair me critically on a daily basis, especially sight. I'd rather lose the ability to cook well than lose the ability to see anything or hear sounds.

KoolHndLuke Posted July 16, 2021 Author Posted July 16, 2021 Let's ask the same question when you're hungry. Tougher choice then, huh?

FauxFurry Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 There are not exactly any Braille monitors out there, so Sight is off the table right off for anyone who makes use of any modern technology. Besides, I need to keep an eye out (by which I mean within my skull) for others who are far less attentive than I am to keep from becoming roadkill. Hearing provides me with far too much in the way of situational awareness to willingly want to part with it. I've lost it before due to intense pressure based damage and I am glad that I found it again in a prompt fashion. I would probably be dead many times over without it at my sides. It covers whatever my vision can not detect. While my sense of smell is nothing the sneeze at, I could potentially survive in its absence even though it is linked to taste. Some would say that I have a compromised sense of taste to begin with.

Sure. But doesn't the loss of one sense heighten your remaining senses? Lose any one and your body adjusts as much as it can. Sight would be the most crippling with regards to awareness of your surroundings obviously, but more acute hearing and smell could (and does) compensate. Not speaking from experience of course (thankfully), so I don't know.

If one can no longer swim, one must figure out how to float or else one drowns, so to speak.

However, when's the last time your survival was at stake? Not recently and a rare occurrence I'd wager. With that in mind it's more about what you want than what you need. After smell it's a toss-up between sight and hearing for me I think. Was sure it would be sight, but no video games after that? No. Also I'd miss seeing my little cat crashed out while listening to music instead of tearing up my house- the little shit!

Guest Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 I agree on smell. This is the one I (rationally thinking) I use less (and probably I am doing a bad thinking.) From how humans are "built", smell is probably the last to dull.

Kendo 2 Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Without a sense of smell all you'd be able to taste is sour or sweet. Food would just become fuel. I had a high school teacher who fought in Burma during WW2. The Japs shelled them with mustard gas and he was dosed. Damn near blind, emphysema yet he never smoked and unable to taste anything. It had happened to him so long ago that he didn't remember what food tasted like.
Neptis Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 has to be smell for me i rely on my sight for drawing and although i could possibly learn B S L it would still limit who i could consevibly talk to .

Worst, i damaged my hearing more due the smoke detector approaching without any protection. As for smell, i smoke so i lost most of my smell already. Not really a choice i'll guess but thats life. Life sucks and isn't fair. Not that nature cares.

I live around people who smoke and their second-hand smoke can be pretty annoying at times. as a former smoker . i can agree that the smell of second-hand smoke is annoying. i always found it odd at the time what folk found so discusting about how a smeld. but since i quit(the hardest thing i ever did) i now know . and seem to be more sensitive to the smell. and have relised its not the non smokers that are the worsed its the former smokers like myself (my own opinion)
