[WIP]Mermaids

Well, in my opinion, the whole point of having a mermaid race is for people to act like they're the Naga, Nami, or some mythical creature from any mythology you could think of. Think about how much time you spend in the water anyway. If I'm going to spend most of my time on solid ground, then why go through the whole hassle of making a race with a fish tail if I'm just going to shapeshift into the form a human?

Having armors with different models (same way as there are female and male versions, there'd be a mermaid one) would allow people to still apply the same enchantments and armor bonses as they would with otherraces.

Think of the water cushion as the reason for the levitating. As in, the mermaid's not levitating through magic, but she/it's held above ground by the enchanted water itself. So the mermaid wouldn't have enough power to shapeshift, but, since the creature has a natural talent for manipulating water, it could use it as it's wheelchair.

Because Suludi made an entire new underwater world for mermaids. Maybe mtaman would make too, and there is mjy on the nexus, an underwater world as well.

If they have some sort of water beneath them, and wearing those armor at the same time, I don't think it would held them up, they would sink and land on the ground.

Imagine the enchanted body of water is (magical physics-wise) a piece of stone with gell on the bottom.

welllll, we kinda have unconfirmed progress.

actually, the only thing we miiiight need right now is a good mermaid model, if we cant get one, we'll use EB's. :U

Hey there,

I'm really glad that there's some activity going around this thread, and I would really love to see mermaids come out for Skyrim. I've downloaded and checked out Suludi's compilation and I just want to provide input regarding the idea, sorry if it has already been discussed before but I haven't really read through all the pages lol.

I'll seperate it in parts for convenience.

Mermaid Physiology
Mermaids are aquatic creatures, Legends and myth state that Mermaids are half-mammal on the upper and half-fish below. If you guys plan on going the mermaid have mammal fin tails route, you can disregard this.

I would just like to point out my observations from what I've seen from the models.
Out of all the models, I like the "Maid" nif file the best, so I'll use that as a reference.

1.) Fins - This greatly affects the animation of movement and how fins are placed and arranged. Fins aren't merely there for aesthetics, each fin has a specific function in fluidity of movement in water. Also I would just like to point out that fishes as far I know do not have horizontal tail fins.

If you guys are planning to have more fins added to the model other than the most important one (tail fin), then I recommend looking into more about the Pectoral (and possibly Dorsal) fins which are very important.

2.) Movement - Fishes move in a sideways motion, this gives them the advantage of fluid movement and flexibility, since Mermaids have a fish tail this should apply to them as well.

3.) Scales - When adding textures to the mermaid's tail, let's not forget the lateral line. ;)

Mermaid Combat
I'm not sure if underwater combat can be easily implemented, I just want to pitch in that shouts can be used for combat on land and also underwater. I believe the Mermaid's lore with their voices fits nicely with the power of the Voice, giving them an advantage amongst other races by having faster cooldown.

Some powers/magic/shouts/etc to consider -

1.) (Shout) Call aquatic creatures to aid them in battle. Creatures summoned depend on what waterbody (lake/river/sea/ocean) the mermaid is at. If they are on land, the mermaid summons hordes of mudcrabs.

2.) (Shouts) Mermaid songs that can Paralyze/Rally/Calm/Fear/Fury foes around the mermaid within 'x' feet for 'y' seconds. The song becomes a powerful version the longer it is held.

3.) (Passive) Since mermaids are a cross between mammals and fish. I suppose Mermaids should have passive frost resistance.

Tail<--->Feet Transformation
There should be a quest line where Mermaids are granted a passive power, that enables them transform their tails to legs. Depending on water exposure (rain is also considered), the effect is not immediate, it takes a minute perhaps for them to change.

For example, when a Mermaid(w/ tail) with the "gift" comes out of water, she has to flop around on land for a minute or two to dry off and receive her legs. Same goes for a Mermaid(w/ feet) coming into the water. That way player won't have the usual problems of immediate transformation when stepping into puddles/rain.

Also mermaids having lived most of their time on water should be sluggish and clumsy in land when they have feet, which means they occasionally stagger and go on a bleeding state animation. The longer they stay on land, the less frequent they stagger. They still have access to their voice though(perhaps a more powerful version.)

Mermaids who have yet to get the "gift" of legs can flop on land. For mobility, there should be a summon spell of a mudcrab (perhaps adorned with a clam shell on top?) in which the Mermaid can ride and traverse the lands of Skyrim.

Let me know what you think.

i was kinda thinking, if we have permanent mermaids, there are floating animations we can give them as a lesser power, so they have to crawl around in skyrim, but when they enter into combat, they can use there lesser power to float on a column of water, but it would drain there stamina and or magicka pool completely. :U

Summoning a mount is a good alternative for crawling, some players might get fed up with the mermaid's slow pace. ;)

Also if the mermaid summons a column of water as a platform, It might put the mermaids at a disadvantage since the mermaid's stamina and magicka is depleted. If she's riding on a Mudcrab or any mount, she can still perform spells and swing weapons.

Also YY- PrincessRiding Animation would look good on her.

mmm, very true, except for the fact that, mounted combat in skyrim is kind of terrible, but if it weren't, i'd totally be in agreeance about summoning a mudcrab to ride on

and i was thinking of a disadvantage because summoning a water column wouldnt be a think that a mermaid could just do over and over, it would in a way be like using Wuld when over encumbered, but with a far longer effect time, and a longer cooldown.

or walking could be crawling, and running could be summoning a water column because it would be depleting stamina, giving the mermaid an insanely slow walk speed, and an insanely high run speed

 Here's what I think.

1. I don't know about the summoning spell, summon spells tend to get annoying and too many mudrcabs can get in the way.

2. I defintely agree on this. Mermaids should be able to sing songs with magical effects.

3. Yes, why not make mermaids immune to the cold since they've lived in the water most of their life, at the same time, they should also not be harmed by normal weather conditions. They should also have no problems adapting to either freshwater or saltwater.

The tail to feet transformation is already implemented. It needs a special effects transformation, otherwise it will just be a flash of water then bam! Getting wet in shallow water, or nearby a waterfall won't trigger transformation though. The game only recognizes swimming and raining events. I hoep there is a way to get around this.

Ofcourse the mermaid won't imediately transform, she has to cast a feet spell, or wait like 5 minutes to completely dry.

The idea of a mermaid who just gained legs walking clumsy on land is hilarious. Maybe something similar to the drunk walk animation.

I'm not so sure about the riding a mudcrab idea, it seems kinda tacky.

Overall, I think the transformation thing should be a lesser power, players who get fed up with the mermaid's pace can switch to legs, and switch to tail whenever they feel like being a mermaid. Although factors like getting wet, or getting dry while a mermaid could still trigger transformation. Ok for those pure mermaids who can't have legs yet, I believe they should avoid veturing on land until they get their powers. For mermaid followers, their transformation can be triggered via dialogue, or by splashing, or by steamdrying them.

Also consider perhaps more so in the case of NPC's mermaids knocked out might revert to their true form too.

Or we have a scaled legs skin texture for them in biped form.

Put the mermaid is not the armor.

What do we do?

Please help.

I want to wear the clothes.

Give me some answers.

The frustrating.

But dolphins have horizontal tail fins. So if the mermaids a mammal then the tail fin should be horizontal.

You cannot use any of this stuff yet. It's all still in the works.

Thank you for the link mtaman, with that mod it isn't necessary to make new underwater combat animations anymore since it uses the vanilla.

All we need is the crawl animations, and a mermaid and merman working mesh.

I get the subtle hint. But I'm not making a crawl animation. I want my mermaids to use legs on land and a tail in the water. Everything else is just useless and ridiculous in my opinion.
