Slorm Posted August 8, 2020 Posted August 8, 2020 I've been kicking around adding these mods but looking at various reviews they seem to be heavily dependant on using followers, which is something I really hate as I play as a sneaky character and they just get in the way (and make the game too easy with the extra firepower). So my question to anyone that's used these mods, are they playable without being stuck with companions or does it make the mods unplayable or pointless?

Depravity has a few quests where it forces someone to come along with you but you can do most of it solo i believe. Valkyrie is pretty follower heavy because the whole questline revolves around one of the added followers, both are pretty fun though. One thing to point out if you like stealth, these mods love to spawn groups of pre aggro'd enemies on you, they are tough but if your high level you should be fine.

You get "forced" to have Sarah & Owen through out Wag the Dog. Other than that the companions are pretty much an option. But, keep in mind, there are some quest lines that you better have a companion, or two, along or you'll play hell trying to complete. Thuggysmurf like to spawn a verity of bad guys in the same spot, which makes sneaking very hard to impossible. Lot a fun!
Slorm Posted August 9, 2020 Author Posted August 9, 2020 Thanks both your comments have been really valuable. I think I'll leave it for a while as is doesn't sound like the sort of gameplay I'm into (I'm much more into sneaking than spray and pray, twitch gameplay)
izzyknows Posted August 9, 2020 Posted August 9, 2020 You can sneak... it's just much more of a challenge. I like a sneaky sniper build, and Depravity has a sniper quest. All the humans in my game have 1 shot weapons, so the spray n pray tactic usually gets you killed. LOL

LOL What's a good level to start at, I did briefly try it at around level 3 or 4 and always got annihilated by the Gunners when you leave Fallons?

I leave through the roof and and sneak off the back side, away from Concord. It's a bloody challenge at very low levels. And Blood on the Highway... is always yours! LOL With the the mods I run, they ignore my PC if unarmed. But around level 15+ is usually a good spot to start. You still have to be really patient and sometimes running away like hell is the best plan.
EgoBallistic Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 I haven't played Depravity, but Outcasts & Remnants and Project Valkyrie are very reliant on combat and not suited to a stealth playstyle. There are a few locations that are absolute meat grinders, with enormous maps that constantly throw very tough enemies at you. I found those to be terribly tedious. The parts that require you to bring a companion are balanced with a companion in mind, but the companion and the loot you get make you completely overpowered for the vanilla game.
Invictusblade Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 also if you are going to play these mod, I would turn off Pack Attack: NPC Edition because I did notice that I crashed a lot using both mods. (more than likely because I had a shit load of other mods at the time) because the Depravity spawns hordes of NPCs and the game has a heart attack when assigning special AI to them

You can do it from level one. When the gunners attack inside Fallons, hang back and let Murphy and pals handle the brunt of it. Once they're all dead, loot the bodies and do some trading. Most of the Fallons npcs are merchants, and they have some high end Nuka World gear which goes a long way towards evening the odds. I'm particularly fond of the Disciple Cutlass one of them sells, but there's also some Pack armor going which is worth having. Then go up onto the roof, grab the sniper rifle up there and pick off the gunners waiting outside. With a bit of luck one or two of the Fallons crew will get caught up in the alert and come out to lend a hand.

The last version I had that and a few other things fixed. I love the mods, but game balance isn't their strong suite. LOL

Don't forget, you can open the workbench as soon as you get there, so you can setup the first floor for when you escape the prison. Oh, and if you remove the room bounds & portals it fixes the messed up build mode.
DocClox Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Yeah, I try not to do that. The chests full of shipments seem particularly cheat-ey. I did once try to power up the laser turrets in the foyer, but I couldn't seem to get the fusebox working, so I gave up.
isalex Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 I absolutely recommend both if not all "Thuggyverse" mods.. as you, I like to sneak, a lot.. a lot-lot-lot.. and these mods allow that and yes, you do have Sarah and the kid tagging along for a very, very, small time.. Valkyrie is no bother to have as a companion, she sneaks like a pro and does NOT talk all the time about whatever.. play them if you, like me, is sick and tired of the crappy vanilla quest-line and the cardboard "companions".. it´s fun and you get to blow up stuff ?
Marku$Tay Posted September 21, 2020 Posted September 21, 2020 I also play stealth/sniper, and would still strongly recommend Thuggy's mods. There's a mix of different game-play styles, and aside from a bit with Sarah and the kid (which is fairly short), you can solo it. And believe it or not, once you free Valkyrie and get her up to Satellite Station Olivia, you can dump her for the rest (despite the mod being named for her, you DON'T need her, but she's kinda cool so whatever). The longest part with Project Valkyr is getting to her, and if you just do the Cabot's quest vanilla-style, you'll walk right into her (so really its only 'long' in as much that she's introduced in the middle of another quest which has almost nothing to do with her, aside from some backstory). And with most of his followers, you don't have to worry about having too many - he doesn't use the vanilla companion system with Valkyrie and others (I know the OP doesn't care about that, but I figure others seeing this might). Just read all the terminals as you go through places to get the full experience from the mod. And that's what it is all about with Thuggy mods - THE STORY. Its a lot of little details that constantly add-up to one huge story. In fact, he has the clues to a certain something spread over four different mods, and that's part of the fun. And if you like blowing crap up, then really its a no-brainer. You can blow-up ALL the major population centers in the CW with his mods, if you want (except, I think, GN... he seems to have a soft-spot for that place). And Depravity lets you open a ghoul-run slave market in DC's outfield... whats better than that? Why go to FH when you can just buy Kasumi off the auction block? LOL

Especially considering that the mods tend to spawn enemies all around you all the time. You have a quest marker, you go there, you take the item you have to take to complete the quest, the script is triggered and you find yourself surrounded by a bunch of enemies materializing out of thin air. All Thuggy mods are full of scripted spawns, (literally) in-your-face scripted ones. You make a step and the enemy is spawned at the location you've seen as empty few moments ago.
