Bodyslide/Outfit Studio Clarification and Help Required

hi,

i am still learning my way around Bodyslide/Outfit Studio, and i have watched at least 2 dozen videos on it, as well as read the GitHub info site, but there are still questions i have which are not explained in detail, or at all, in any of the links i have explored. and they are basic questions, i suppose. but i do like to know not only "what" i am doing, but "why" i am doing it.

so i thought i would ask here for some help on these issues, so i can better understand things without having to resort to asking questions all the time.

(important to note that i use 3BBB body, cbpc, fair skin, xpmsse and HDT-SMP, and and i use my own Preset, based from the CBBE Curvy preset, which is called CustomPreset01)

1. Batch Building outfits:

i am a bit confused as to what is supposed to go in the Outfit/Body window when i select groups for Batch Building.

  • Groups: I check the folder/folders i want, and i ensure that the 3BBB folder is also selected
  • Outfit/Body: "SE 3BBB Body Amazing" is selected always.
  • Preset: CustomPreset01 is selected

i then Batch Build. when the physics comes up in the pre-selection window, i select 3BBB Body Amazing, and then it builds whatever was in the selected groups.

  1. are my settings correct?
  2. do i need to select the 3BBB group each time i batch build at all ?
  3. do i need to also click on "Build" after each batch build ?

2. Batch Building/Build using special keys:

in various youtube videos i watched, and in many threads here on the LL site, i see some differences in how the Batch Build, and Build functionality is used. some videos say to just click those buttons as normal. others say to use either CTRL, ALT, or SHIFT when you click on Batch Build/Build. i have been using CTRL + Batch Build/Build. so what are the differences between:

  1. CTRL + Batch Build/Build
  2. ALT + Batch Build/Build
  3. SHIFT + Batch Build/Build
  4. Batch Build/Build only

3. Single Outfits Slider Settings:

Single Sliders are still confusing to me for what is supposed to be in the options. i just want to verify that i am doing it right.

  • Outfit/Body = (whatever outfit i am working on)
  • preset = CustomPreset01

at this point, i just click (CTRL +) Build once i finish my adjustments ?

4. Body Missing in Preview Window:

when i select single outfits in Outfit/Body, and i have my preview window open, sometimes i see the outfit with my body shape, and sometimes i just see the outfit. why is that, and is there a setting or something i need to do, so i can have my body show up in the preview pane with every single outfit i set sliders for ?

5. Default Bodies on Outfit Conversions:

there are some outfit conversation i download, and use bodyslide on without issues. but when i wear them in the game, it's not my body or my skin. even though i converted them properly, and everything else i convert looks fine and adapts to my body, some of these converted outfits seem to have their own "built-in" body. why is that, and how do i get rid of that default body and have it convert to mine instead ?

(example of this would be:  [Melodic] Emma Frost CBBE SE HDT-SMP, or Neo Oriental Dress CBBE HDT Bodyslide, which can both be found on LL)

anyway, thank you ahead of time for helping me out to understand and answering my questions.

One of our own bois also got annoyed at the lack of good info on Bodyslide and wrote a guide for you.

Edit: If any of your questions still go unanswered after reading that, let me know and I'll try to help.

thanks, i did read and will read again a few times but so far, it hasn't answered my questions, actually, it's presented me with even more questions than before. if my questions can be answered, then i think this link may make more sense.

5> deal with it. Body armor is usually made with a reference body, that reference body defines what you'll see when donning it

(If it's an incompatible body type ie, you are cbbe ish and it is unp is, you may see a weird texture problem, and visa versa)

Note: you could conceivably replace the reference body and create a new version using Outfit Studio and mad modding skills. That one is beyond my present skills... hence my lazy "deal with it" advise.

4> body armor pieces are usually accompanied by a reference body. other pieces (a bikinii bottom, or a shoulder adornment, or medallions and amulet, or piercings etc etc are not. simple as that. Why? idk. it's annoying sometimes. But I'm grateful for what I am gifted with by those who know what I don't know.

3> tbh I only use bodyslide studio (not outfit studio) so I stick with making changes only to a given body, ie the nekid body. for different uses (nekid vs in heavy armor for instance, I create different custom presets to cover the body changes (heavy armor: flattened nipples smooshed breasts and/or pushup)

EX: Sayah_naked, Sayah-heavy armor, Sayah_clothed (kinda inbetween)

2>dunno

1> batch in general. To batch a group like "ancient Draghur" or "Midnight Breed" or "SunJeong's NinRIm collection" click batch and uncheck everything but that set. Make sure to Pick the body Preset you would use to make your nekid or clothed player use before doing so.

(Note right click inside the modal box and select none first, makes life easier. then you can jsut select the ones you want batched)

- At least that's how I batch. (which in my case is more often done for followers than for me. I generally stick with one favorite outfit (plus a couple of different body piece options)  that I've pieced together from a variety of armor/clothing mods, so I do my personal builds singularly). Also that only applies to fem characters., My male just uses stock crap and if its armor rating is too low I hit it with lazy tools...

Whatever, when doing a Batch build the Outfit/Body field doesn't matter (you'll build whatever that was selected in the list that appears after pressing Batch build).

  • I guess, it really depends on the mods you're building the items from.
  • Group filtering and batch building are a mix and match. You select whatever groups you want to build and you batch build all the sets you want from the list of available sets.
  • No, Batch build should cover the currently selected item in the outfit/body field (which is what you will build if you press the Build button alone).

Hovering the mouse over these buttons you'll see the tooltip telling you what these buttons do. From memory, CTRL is used to redirect the files built to a particular location. In other cases a button combination is to remove the files that would normally be generated from the default location. Why would you want to do that? I don't know, these are just different features from BS that may or may not be useful under ver particular circumstances. For normal usage, batch building everything (no filters applied) + selecting the proper sets (if there are any duplicates) should be enough, I wouldn't bother to mess with any other feature unless you go big into BS and Outfit studio to create your sets or tweak the sliders (in which case you'll need to lear waaay more than just what these buttons do).

Editing the sliders for a single item in BS will modify the shape of that particular item, on top of the preset you've chosen. It shouldn't be done unless you want to achieve a purpose in particular (ex. a cleavage look for X outfit), because when you change outfits these changes will be lost (so if you made any noticeable changes in size/proportion/position, these will revert back to the preset shape once the item is unequipped and it will look weird).

Not every item needs to show the body underneath, if every item contains a copy of your body with models and textures (just so you can preview it in BS) it would look bad once you go in game or if you equip more than one item with said body. Usually only the central armor piece contains the body underneath and other pieces will provide the other parts only (boots, gauntlets, helmets, etc.). If we're talking about items that use other slots (like most DD items), you also don't want to have a body model for each item, as the different items and bodies would clip horribly.

Sounds like an issue with these outfits in particular.

ah, i see that it define the ALT and CTRL functions. i assume the normal version is for normal install without modify game paths, but the SHIFT one i did not in the tooltips.

honestly, there are many outfits like this that if test out (even some of the vanilla game ones, not all but some do this, which btw, which group do i use to adjust the outfits from the game ? i don't know which group it is that i should use for this)

deal with it

thing is, i don't  want to. if i use a mod that is posted as a "conversion to/for 3BBB", my expectation is that it will fit my "preset" body and not a different body model that is attached to the outfit. i assume this is the same expectation from anyone who downloads any outfit to test out. so understanding how to fix this, what references am i or should i be looking for the remove so that i can use my own preset body instead, is paramount for the game experience.

thank you both for your answers.

You just need to build the Amazing body once with the preset you want to use. The only reason for building it again would be to change to another preset. You don't need to select any group in particular. You select whatever groups you want to build at that time and then select the available sets after pressing Batch build. You can totally do a batch build without using groups at all.

3 hours ago, YojimboRatchet said:

Again, Groups is not something you have to use. It's just there in case you want to take a look at all the sets from a mod in particular, or you want to build all the sets from just some mods but not all the mods that are providing sets. The only thing you gain by using groups is limit the list of available sets to build (in the Outfit/Body field and thus in the list you get after pressing Batch Build). And this is trusting the mod author did the group thing well and didn't leave any set out of the groups created for that mod, or didn't create multiple groups that overlap or still leave some sets with no groups.

Vanilla outfits that have BS files provided by which mod? The vanilla conversion from CBBE SE for example should work fine, at least I don't know any issue like what you describe. For other outfits from individual mods, it's highly possible the mod itself is the issue (or the issue comes from an unintended conflict).

Sorry, I won't be able to help you with the reference body conversion. You can google/bing/duckduckgo the subject. I'm sure there's a tutorial out there someplace,

Correct. You only need to build everything once. Although, it's worth pointing out that after building the 3BBB body group, you should not build any of the other bodies, so be careful when you're selecting groups for batch build.

Shift+click doesn't do anything as far as I can tell. Either way, you probably shouldn't worry about that if you're just trying to build outfits for your game, just regular click will do fine.

Yeah, the "built-in" body is just because of how Skyrim handles outfits. Instead of putting a mesh over the nude body, it replaces everything below the neck except the hands and feet. You're basically swapping out the body entirely. If you want to fix these, you'll have to do the conversion yourself, but it's...complicated. Vyxenne wrote a wonderfully detailed guide a while back that I can't find the link to but do happen to have.
